JeepFisher Posted November 10, 2016 Posted November 10, 2016 Nope, just finding public parks on the rivers to fish from and having some success here and there. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted November 10, 2016 Super User Posted November 10, 2016 Wow, I have never had much luck shore fishing for stripers. I have only ever really caught them on my kayak as bycatch while going after white perch. I have a spot near my house that sometime produces form shore, but it is very very hit or miss. Quote
JeepFisher Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Funny you say that Bunnielab, I must have picked the right few days to fish because it has been a grind for the last week. Ive caught a few in the 12 - 16 inch range but nothing like the previous week. This is my best from that hot stretch... Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted November 16, 2016 Super User Posted November 16, 2016 My plans for tomorrow fell through and I have the whole day free. Want to spend it fishing but am not inspired by any of my usual spots. Anyone care to suggest a place? I am up for anything within an hour of Annapolis and will be beating the bank or wading. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted November 17, 2016 Super User Posted November 17, 2016 Ended up going to Gilbert Run Lake as 1) I had never been there before, and 2) it has a launch, so wanted to scout it out for yaking in the spring. Didn't catch a single bass, but managed like 15-20 good sized rainbow trout. The first one was quite a surprise, as I had never seen Gilbert on any of the emails the state sends out when they stock. I caught the large majority of them all with in maybe a 30' stretch of bank. All were caught on an assortment of small jerkbaits or tiny lipless cranks. I finally made myself move and caught a few more as I walked the bank a bit. So yea, would love any info about this place, bass-wise. And I guess if anyone wants some trout this weekend, let me know and I will PM you the magic spot. Quote
Willbroberg Posted November 18, 2016 Posted November 18, 2016 Whatsup guys! It's been a while. Just about to end my first semester at UMD. Made a few treks to Artemesia and pulled out a few in early fall. Other than that haven't had much time. Seeing if we can't get a fishing club up and running! Might do a little pond hopping this evening. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted November 18, 2016 Super User Posted November 18, 2016 They stock it spring and fall every year. On the dam by the spill way, and the bulkhead to the right of the bridge are usually good, of course they can pop up anywhere. Some days they play hard to get, and others they are suicidal 1 Quote
DaleGribble Posted November 19, 2016 Posted November 19, 2016 Pulled this out of Needwood in Redlands yesterday. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted November 20, 2016 Super User Posted November 20, 2016 Has anyone purchased a new boat from out of state? Picked mine up from PA yesterday, now need to get paperwork together to get the boat and trailer registered in MD. Knowing how the state can be wondering if there are any known pitfalls to prep for. Quote
patred Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 I'm not sure if it applies, at least when registering my car trailer, it's wayyyyy cheaper to get Maine tags, and registration is for five years. I would imagine it would be the same for boat trailers??? Just about all my "car friends" have Maine license plates on their trailers. Pat 2 Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted November 30, 2016 Super User Posted November 30, 2016 Got out yesterday in the rain (not too bad) and after a really slow start, ended up catching a bunch of dinks and 2 real ones, a 3 lber, and a big skinny one that went about 4, but should have been 6+. (felt sorry for the old girl). All on a finesse spinnerbait. 2 Quote

Super User fishwizzard Posted December 2, 2016 Super User Posted December 2, 2016 I would like to pay someone to stand behind me when I am fishing a jerkbait and smack the back of my head if I don't let it sit long enough. I can pay in beer and tackle. Was at Allen Pond today. There was a steady wind with some crazy gusts every couple of minuets. I was messing around with a new reel (Dawia SV105) I bought and fishing a jerkbait. I was trying my best to let the lure sit for a solid 20 count between jerks. I was lucky to manage 5-10 seconds, but hey, I was mostly there to fuss with the reel. In any case, about an hour in I went to jerk the lure and right as I gave it a pull something smacked it. I knew he missed it, but being dumb I tried to set the hook anyway. In my haste to recast I didn't pay attention to the wind and as the lure was flying a huge gust came and just swatted it right back at me. Even the SV spool couldn't save me. The backlash killed the entire spool. Fortunately, it was only Hybrid, so I only lost a few bucks worth of line, but it was painful to loose that fish. I rarely get a bass there, but every one I have caught has been a solid fish. Quote

Super User fishwizzard Posted December 2, 2016 Super User Posted December 2, 2016 Thus far I have not caught more then a few bass on a jerkbait. I have caught a surprising number of stocked trout with them however. 23 hours ago, Lendiesel22 said: Where did you go? I have a few places that are not firing at all right now for some reason. I am feeling the same thing, even spots where I can almost always grind out a dink or two have been barren. Quote
Lendiesel22 Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 I hope to get out to the Nanticoke river soon....they should eat underspins and jerk baits. Fish around laydowns will hit spinnerbaits and squarebills as well. Just gotta get a day to go. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted December 3, 2016 Super User Posted December 3, 2016 I keep meaning to drag my kayak out there, but without a GPS I am leery of waters like that. I got super turned around in Jug Bay once and even with my phone I ended up making a bunch of wrong turns on the way back to the launch. If I were smarter and could resist poking around every tiny little branch of it would help as well. I want to explore the Eastern Shore a lot more next year, I live so close to the bridge it's silly that I don't hit at least the ponds there more often. Quote
Lendiesel22 Posted December 3, 2016 Posted December 3, 2016 learn where to be at what times on the shore. There are soooooo many places to fish and some of those places have fish in the 5 to 7 range. The amount of places over the bridge is the up and down side. I have been fishing on foot and by boat over there since I could drive and I have still only fished 75%....im 35 now. Big time multi species state too. Big bass, pike, crappie, and bluegills. There is a flavor for everyone over there. Including salt water guys too. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted December 3, 2016 Super User Posted December 3, 2016 Yea, most of the intel I have for over there is salt stuff, I don't know many freshwater kayakers. This past year I was obsessed with wading for smallies so my yak sat neglected for far too much of the year. Quote
Lendiesel22 Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 An excellent tasting fish no doubt about it. lol I bet....my father got into a bunch of nice bass at Wagamons yesterday. Quote

Willbroberg Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 About to be back in Frederick for winter break! Itching to get out and make some casts. Im guessing a jerk bait would be bait of choice at the moment?! Also guessing the fishing has slowed down tons. Never really tried winter fishing but I am dying to get out there after being cramped in a dorm room. Let me know how the fishing has been. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted December 8, 2016 Super User Posted December 8, 2016 I had the day free and decided to hit up Anglers Express in Cockysville. I heard about it on here a few days ago and the idea of a bass-centric store in MD was too much to pass up. It's a little hard to find but is a great shop. While not large, their selection is very well curated, if that makes sense. Talked to the owner for a while and he gave me some spots to try up at Loch Raven, which is right up the road. I decided to splurge on a LC Pointer to see what all the fuss was about. First cast this little fellow decided he wanted a look as well: I caught another his size a few casts later, then nothing. Walked the bank for a while with no other luck. The wind really began to whip up and there were actually waves out on the water. On the way back to the car I made one more cast to where I caught the first pickerel and saw a huge one follow my lure back in. I killed it in about a foot of water about two feel from the bank. I slowly twitched it but he just sat there an watched. After about 45 seconds of stalemate he turned and ambled off. Of course all thoughts of the car were gone and i spent about 45 more minutes casting across the little cove I was in but nothing. The wind got worse and worse and after a wave came up high enough to soak my foot I called it a day. 2 Quote

Reminds me of an encounter I had last year with the pickerel's largest cousin on a creek right where it fed into the Potomac. Just sat there and looked at the Zara Spook then slowly swam away. Kept casting and casting and later had a smaller muskie (only about two feet long) look at it, then just settle on the bottom of the creek. Pat Quote
