Lendiesel22 Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Cool, we are getting closer and closer to some real outings. Ya know, with no ice in the guides. 1 Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted February 10, 2016 Super User Posted February 10, 2016 I had some free time Monday afternoon and stopped by Daniel's Dam. I wanted to test some wader boots a friend loaned me. Low and behold about ten minuets after I arrive the state trout stocking truck pulls up. You would think that it would be like shooting fish in a barrel, but between the very high and fast water, my inexperience in working spinners in fast current, and the fish being pre-spooked, I only managed to catch four fish. With my rod that is, after loosing my sixth spinner and getting an amazing wind knot, I switched to carefully netting the fish as they were stacking up behind rocks. I didn't even have to look, just slowly move my net up to a rock from behind and lift, maybe 3/4 of the time I would have a trout in it. If I stood still long enough they would stack up in the slack behind my legs. It was thoroughly ridiculous but kind of fun. Quote
JeepFisher Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Anyone try large swimbaits in MD? I have gotten really interested in it this winter and got a few larger baits (8" and 6" Hudds, Spro Rats, Jackall Ganterel, etc...) I figured at the least, I could get some of the larger pickerel to take some swipes at them. Just curious if anyone has had much success... Quote
ArnieMD Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Not sure if anyone had seen this, http://www.cityoffrederick.com/CivicAlerts.aspx?aid=3923 . I know they had planned on draining it, but sounds like all the fish currently there will be disposed of and not relocated. Quote
basser89 Posted February 20, 2016 Author Posted February 20, 2016 That's a shame they didn't relocate the fish in there. Most, if not all, the bass I've caught from there looked healthy. 1 Quote
Lendiesel22 Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 New DE state record caught. 11.10lb I have fished that pond like 100x and caught some good ones but nothing over 6lbs. Quote
patred Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Beat the old record by a pound! http://www.delaware-surf-fishing.com/andrew-klein-bests-the-delaware-state-largemouth-bass-record/ Pat Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted February 22, 2016 Super User Posted February 22, 2016 That thing is a monster. Also it never occurred to me to use a ribbon worm as a spinner bait trailer.... Quote
Lendiesel22 Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 My dad lives 10 min from there. We fish it a fair amount. It def has some solid fish in it. That fish has taken advantage of some of the bait fish that use the fish ladder. A few years ago i got my dad a big swimbait for the big bass there and he got a 38" rock fish at the boat ramp at night. He thought a foul hooked a beaver lol. I know some of the locals use big live bait this time of year for big bass too. Quote
Willbroberg Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Hey! Looking for some new spots to fish around Frederick. Just got a new pair of waders, so any spots where I could wade would be great. I'd love some new lakes or ponds where I could fish from shore. Obviously looking for largemouth or smallmouth. Quote

Caught my personal best out of there last March, 5.3 pounds. I live real close to there and it looks like I lost my best fishing spot during the week when I don't have time to run out somewhere else this year. I wonder how long it's going to take become a decent fishery again. I really had that place figured out too. I know there is another pond down by Whittier, but I can't figure that place out to save my life. I guess I'll have to try and change that. I saw you have a kayak, me too. If you want some smallmouths, put your yak in on the Potomac at the Mouth of Monocacy boat ramp. It's an easy paddle up river so you don't need to worry about somebody dropping a car downriver for take out. I've fished that area pretty hard the last 2 years and did really well last year. I would normally put in, paddle out to the Potomac and paddle up to the first island and fish/float back down. Rinse and repeat. I caught about a half dozen 18 inchers last year. 1 Quote

That's a bummer, just started fishing there.. Quote
Willbroberg Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 Anyone know how Black Hills is doing? Went up there during the summer when I was relatively newer to fishing and didn't manage to catch anything, my grandpa lives near the lake and used to be a pretty big fisherman and said the bass population has been down recently ? Any reports? Quote
Lendiesel22 Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 2 weeks ago it had ice in the coves. I am sure its fishable now 1 Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted February 27, 2016 Super User Posted February 27, 2016 I took a look today, didn't see any ice. The area around the boat ramp is rather muddy but clears up pretty quick towards main lake. 2 Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted February 28, 2016 Super User Posted February 28, 2016 Spent the weekend at a local pond. Caught about a dozen dink-12" fish, then finally this guy at the end of the day today: It's is hard to see in the pic, but his lips were bright red, as were all the fish I caught. Anyone know what causes that? 2 Quote

Willbroberg Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 Gonna head out to Lake Linganore dam tomorrow , any suggestions on what to throw? Quote
southern basser Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 I didn't think black hills opened until the 1st for personal boats. I've been waiting for the 1st to get out there. 1 Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted February 29, 2016 Super User Posted February 29, 2016 It wasn't open, I only live about 15 minutes from there. Had some time to waste so just stopped by to take a look and walk around for a few minutes. It should open up March 1st, there was no ice or anything to keep it closed. Quote
southern basser Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 Sounds good, need to get out on the water. Thanks for the update on the lake, I've drove from hagerstown before to go out there only to find ice. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted February 29, 2016 Super User Posted February 29, 2016 I have been meaning to hit Black Hills in my kayak, but have never gotten around to it. I live on the other side if DC so the though of dealing with 495 on the way home in the evening kills me. Quote
