Fished the Potomac River today near Antietam Creek for a few hours.  Kind of slow, water temp around 58 degrees.  Only had three bites using Berkley Gulp! Killer Crawlers but landed three fish.  If that last one actually counts as a fish.  I love the contrast of colors on the second smallmouth.  14.5 inches on the first one, 11.5 on the second one and who cares about the third one.

Fished the C&O today for a couple of hours and managed to catch my 2nd ever small mouth and my new PB. This one definitely lived up to their reputation of being great fighters and along with the great weather made for a good outing.

With my new job starting monday I have been trying to get out everyday and here is the results from today's outing another smallmouth that was just a hair over 1.5lbs according to the scale. These fish are such a blast the way he hit reminded me of spanish mackerel or blue fish slamming lures from the beach.

Going out for some Stripers saturday morning so hopefully I'll have some pictures from the trip to share.

I will be in the Frederick area for the Thanksgiving weekend.  Are the smallies biting up toward Harpers Ferry?  And if so, what are they hitting?

Thanks,

Dave

I didn't get a thing when I went out two weeks ago below Harper's Ferry.  Didn't get a nibble, but water temp was eight degrees lower than it was the week before when I caught the two at the top of the page.  I was using 3" plastic worms and tube baits.

On the Maryland Angler's Log, a guy caught a 20" smallmouth in the Edwards Ferry area a couple weeks ago on a 3.5" tube bait.

Wanted to do my yearly post about Fish On Bass Anglers...The 2016 schedule has been set and is in the image below in case anyone is interested.  We have several members on this board, hopefully we can add to it!

FOBA is a local bass club based in Montgomery County, MD that is open to all.  We hold 13 tournaments per year and the schedule is very diverse, you will get to see a lot of quality water in FOBA!  Boaters and Co-Anglers are encouraged to join, especially Co-Anglers.  We have separate divisions so the boaters and co-anglers don't compete against each other.  The club has a big emphasis on sharing information so it's a great learning atmosphere...Just as an example, during weigh-in results every angler explains how they caught their fish and other details about their day.  Members can fish as many or as few events as they wish and in addition to tournaments we also hold and annual family picnic and a year-end awards banquet.  We also hold annual US Coast Guard boat safety inspections to ensure boats are properly equipped and also to provide the USCG sticker that helps to avoid being stopped for future checks.

Feel free to shoot me a PM if you want any more information.  Our first meeting of the new year will be in January and the tournament season kicks off April 9th!  I don't think I can link to our site but it is on my profile as allowed by BR rules if you want to check it out.

Thanks Logan

FOBA is the club I fish with, and it is great. Boaters against boaters and co's versus co's make for a fair playing field. You learn a LOT because guys are willing to share and talk about things. As Logan mentioned the weigh-in results have each person provide info on baits and locations so everyone can learn. Schedule is a good mix of locations, some smallie areas mixed in. Been a coangler with this club for 5 seasons.

Potomac walleye

I know this is a bass forum, but I was still excited to land my first Potomac River walleye today.  I've been fishing the Potomac since October of last year and figured I would have lucked into one at some point ... and finally did!  Haven't caught a walleye in 20+ years since when I lived in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Congrats! Is that a gulp nightcrawler?

Yes, I've had really good luck with them on a weedless jighead working the bottom.  Nothing but smallmouth up until yesterday. :)  The only bad thing about them is that they are about as durable as a real worm.  The first time I used them a few months ago, I went through a pack of 10 in about a half hour, but at least caught five smallmouth.

How about this December weather. Made it out to Brunswick Saturday. Had just enough water to hop the falls and run up below harpers ferry. Put 20 in the boat and lost around 10. Majority of fish were keepers. Healthy and plump. Biggest bass around 16-17 inches. Unfortunately the better fish got off. Manage to catch a big carp that actually ate my jig.

Nice reel you have there.

Been experiencing the same thing here in DC. Caught 2 in the mouth on a silver buddy the other day.

Took advantage of the warm weather on Christmas Eve and fished the Potomac River near Dam 4.  Caught more of these toothy smallmouth ;) on a silver Rapala Shadow Rap.  Four fish measuring between 10 and 12 inches in about two hours.

I picked up a few Shadow Raps earlier this year after watching one of the Lindner brothers fishing with them on TV and have caught smallmouth, channel catfish, fallfish and now walleye with them.  Jerk-jerk-pause or variations of that when retrieving them.  They have a lot more action compared to the traditional Rapala minnow and hold depth better.

Hey all - I'm new to MD and am looking for a few starter spots. I'm interested in most freshwater fish (for now)...not really into carp fishing. I would love to find some great bass/panfish spots and would love to catch some big cats, too (without having to go to potomac)

I live near BWI so I'm looking for places pretty close. I don't have a boat but do have a car topper that I plan on using in Tridelphia once it opens up. For now I need some starter spots for shore fishing and/or wading.

I don't mind a little bit of a hike and don't mind getting dirty. So far I'm going to try out:

1- Little Patuxent on the Patuxent Research Refuge
2- Little/mid Patuxent near Savage Park

I've heard recommendations on a few other places but none of them came with instruction on where to park et cetera.

If anyone feels like sharing their knowledge with a fellow angler I'd certainly appreciate it!

1st post in this thread...Matt, from Annapolis.

Fished Rocky Gorge all last year...did fairly well, learned how to catch them deep (eye opener) but with Tri being closed this year and next I think RG is gonna be a madhouse. Also really worried about the water levels. May sit this year out over there.

Thinking this year...gonna focus on the Eastern Shore rivers and Delaware Ponds. I fish out of a kayak, so their size and depth fit me the best anyways. Remember fishing the Chic and Transquaking as a kid with my dad. Ive always heard Blackwater is a hidden gem, because you can only cartop boats in there. Tuckahoe Lake has always done me good...but with it so wide open youve gotta watch the wind very close. Also have some experience in the Salisbury ponds, really like Leonards!

I know the Choptank has been way down, but anyone been in Watts Creek recently? Remember in the 90s that place was great.

Also been seeing a lot of the posts about the C&O on here, didnt know it was that good over there. Might be a place to check out with the G/F, multi species, fish from shore.

I hadn't heard Tridelphia is closed this year. That's a bummer as I was probably going to make that my primary lake. Where is this info posted? Guess I'll be trying out RG - if you have any pointers for a new guy I'd certainly appreciate it. Feel free to PM.
