Bill Poch Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Hey guys, I'm looking to get a kayak this spring to get out on the water. Any recommendations? I'd probably prefer a sit-on but Im not set on that, if you can stand up and fish that would be even better. Looking to spend under 600. Just for reference I'm 6' 200. If you want to stand and fish in a kayak you are going to need to double your budget and look at Jackson kayaks. I can't afford one of those, but they are amazing yaks. I picked up a 10' sit in from Bass Pro 2 years ago called the Ascend FS10. It was already rigged for fishing and I really like it. It's my 1st kayak and it's pretty stable, I haven't rolled it yet. They do have a 12 sit on top rigged for fishing for $550. You may want to check out the boating section of this forum http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/forum/10-bass-boats-canoes-kayaks-and-more/ You'll find better info most likely. Quote
RedskinsFisher Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Thanks Bill, I'll look through that thread. Yeah I wasnt sure if there were any standups in that range, I'm hoping someone knows of a good deal haha. Can't wait for this weather to warm up and get out there Quote
Jeremy pharmareaps Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 I have the ascend sit on top kayak that is a tank... I take the chair out and stand all the time depending on current. Works great and great for the price. I'd advise looking into a cart or making one as it is a tank. I'm 6'4 and very clumsy so it passes for me! The sit in,ascend is nice as well but I only use it on faster water as I prefer to stand (makes fly fishing much easier) Quote
Bill Poch Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 I don't know about you all, but I'm ready to get out of this deep freeze and get some lines wet. The end of March can't come soon enough. 1 Quote

Preetmandavia Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 How's it going everyone! I'm a new member of the forum and also fairly new to fishing. I work in McLean but Live in Clarksburg, so I plan to frequent Black Hill on the weekends. I'e done some light reading on different lures, tactics, and times to fish and was wondering when you all think the lake would be active again. My guess was around late march when temperatures start hitting the 70s. I visited the lake last summer and caught a couple of 2-4 pounders on a frog and chigger craw. I don't own a boat so I was also looking for some advice on where on the lake would be a good place to fish. On another note, I work a side gig as a photographer so if any of you need some photos of your fish, let me know! Thank you all in advance for any help! Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted February 24, 2015 Super User Posted February 24, 2015 Welcome Preetmandavia, Black Hills is solid ice at this point. Technically it reopens next Sunday but will be a couple weeks to get rid of the ice. As soon as its it should be good, but from shore not so much. From shore the best thing I can suggest is to park in one of the side lots and walk away from where the mass of people usually go trying to different things as you go. I haven't hardly touched it from shore the last couple years. I don't have a boat but fish in a local club so I hitch rides with others when I can. Wouldn't mind talking to you about photography sometime, just started trying to learn it. 1 Quote
Preetmandavia Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Thanks BrianinMD!!! I'll definitely give it a shot! I mainly enjoy going to spend time with friends and be in a nice calm but scenic environment. Also because its so close to home haha. I'd love to help with photography in any way possible. This is the best advice you can get for fishing Lake Seneca from the shore. There is a lot of water and it is hard to cover in a boat. Allen Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted February 28, 2015 Super User Posted February 28, 2015 WOOHOO!!!! Black Hills opens tomorrow..... Rather depressing to see so much ice on it, even when it warms up it will take a while to thaw that place out. Probably first time I will get out this year will be to the hot side of Lake Anna at the end of March. First tourney is two weeks after that, need to get out before then at least once.... 1 Quote
nastynate Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 Let us know when black hills is thawed. Ready to find some fattys 1 Quote
MARsSPEED Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 This winter seems so long!!! I am hoping the bottom side of the dam at Linganore is fishable next weekend. I am also interested to see how much damage was done to the fish population when they lowered the water level in the lake an additional 2 feet just a few weeks ago for the bridge construction. That was a long sentence... Quote
wv Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 When they are pumping warn water, the river level needs to be high enough so the cold river water mixes (right up at the upper end) in to boost the O2 levels are high enough to hold bass. For me, I track the Hancock river gauge and like to see it in the 4-6' range for my successful outings. Now that my future fishing partner was born last night, I will be able to get a few outings in. Congrats to you. Been a whil since I posted. Last year was a total waste...caught nothing other than a couple bluegills. Between the weather, work and not being able to get my son motivated it was a bust. Hoping to get a license soon and get out within a month or so. Just got done talking to my brother. I picked up a baitcaster reel combo at Bass Pro last fall. He was telling me to use Power Pro braided line. Also telling me about backlashing and adjustments. Anyone want to offer any thoughts. Being financially limited I could only afford a Abu-Garcia Silver Max on a 7 foot Bass Pro medioum graphite rod. I wouldn't have bought rod if I kew it was only one piece. I'm going to practice with some mono I have since he said I might 300 yards by the time I get used to things.:-) He thought for what I paid I did OK plus got a free hoodie out of deal after $10 shipping. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. 1 Quote

It took me a good while to get the hang of it and I can't tell you how many times I had to cut and strip 1/2 the spool off to get out some nasty bird nests. This tip has helped me a lot with getting out the backlashing though Quote
Bill Poch Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Here is a question that's on my mind. Does Black Hill's have shad or are the primary bait fish for bass Blue gill and the perch they put in not to long ago? Quote

Super User BrianinMD Posted March 2, 2015 Super User Posted March 2, 2015 Bill, there is no shad in BH. Bluegills, yellow perch, and crappie. Quote

MDBowHunter Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Liberty and Pretty Boy opened for boats yesterday, it won't be long now. I can't wait to cast out some jerkbaits... Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted March 2, 2015 Super User Posted March 2, 2015 They are calling for 8-9 inches of snow thursday, after sleet/freezing rain tomorrow. If those two are like any of the lakes I have seen it will be awhile before they thaw. Even the mainstream of the lower potomac around DC was frozen completely across... Quote
Bill Poch Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 If anybody wants to put a boat in the water, I'll volunteer to stand at the bow and break the ice. 1 Quote
