Super User BrianinMD Posted August 18, 2014 Super User Posted August 18, 2014 Allen, yeah all of our guys that got limits all hit a quick bite first thing in the morning then it the bite died. My boater and I ran down to Chicamuxen first thing and nothing was going on there. Oh well, still a good day to be on the river. It was August so it could have been unbearable. Quote
Webbster Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 Hey Guys! I live in Hagerstown and fish Big Pool, Cunningham, and the Potomac River mostly. I am new to the forum and thought I'd ask any questions about the lakes around me here. Thanks Welcome spiggy212, There is a lot of good info here. How do you get at the fish? Fish from the bank, kayak, boat or wade? With a canoe or yak there is good fishing in Antietam creek (put in at Devils Back bone on Rt. 68) There is Greenbrier state park, good for boat, yak or bank fishing. There is Beaver Creek which is mostly trout fishing. There is the Monocacy River (Frederick) good canoe & yak fishing. Put in at Mouth of the Monocacy Park. Many places on the Potomac, good wade fishing for smallies this time of year. There is a small pond (Hamburg Pond) in Gambril park. I've caught a few nice smallies there. Good luck and let me know how you make out with the fishing, Webbster Quote

Super User BrianinMD Posted August 18, 2014 Super User Posted August 18, 2014 If you are in that area of Frederick check out Google maps of the Frederick watershed area. There are ponds sprinkled throughout it, some are close to the road some are a little bit of a hike but don't get much pressure. 1 Quote
basser89 Posted August 18, 2014 Author Posted August 18, 2014 There are smallies in the Hamburg pond? I've managed a few small largemouth out of there but nothing else. With all the brush around the pond, there's not many standing options there either. Quote
Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted August 20, 2014 Super User Posted August 20, 2014 Hey guys....just checking in. Laptops fried so I can't get on as often as I'd like. Here's a couple recent catches. Beast of a largemouth from earlier today at Loch Raven and my first catfish and smallest striper ever that I caught last week at North Point State Park. Don't know why the pics uploaded upside down. Never had that problem before. I guess just turn your comps upside down. Quote
spiggy212 Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Hamburg pond? Sounds familiar.BrianinMD you are right about that. The watershed has some great spots especially right off tower road and on to Gabril. I fish those ponds a lot. Also Webbster I have caught some great smallmouth through devils backbone especially when it and beaver creek meet. Caught a 4lb this year. I'll show you pics but I don't know how to upload them. 1 Quote
Bill Poch Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Skunked at Blackhills tonight but I did get 2 blow-ups on a frog in the backwash, but they both missed. Who do I have to buy a 12 pack for to take me out there and show me where the fish are? Quote
Webbster Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 I'm hoping to get out to Devils Backbone this Saturday and try out my new waders, boots & a couple Rapala lures I picked up last weekend. Hopefully I'll have some fish pics to show for it. Quote
nebulous13 Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Managed to get my second bass ever last night. Took my 7yo daughter down to Lake Elkhorn and let her fish from the floating dock. She brought in a couple bluegills. I managed to land a little smallmouth with a wacky rig. Got a nibble with a texas rig but yanked it out of his mouth. Zero bites with anything topwater. I've only been fishing for 2 weeks now and what I like is that it's enjoyable even when there's not much action. Maybe that'll change as I catch more fish. I have a question about the texas rig. I had a 2/0 hook with a small bullet weight. The weight was not tethered to the hook in any way; it could slide up and down the line. Am I supposed to be tying the weight on somehow so that it stays right by the hook? Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted August 20, 2014 Super User Posted August 20, 2014 if you are using a bullet shaped weight on the texas rig you do not need to peg it down. Unless fishing heavy cover a lot of people just let the weight slide around. Quote
Webbster Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Good morning y'all. Has anyone here ever fished the pond the Pangborn park in hagerstown? Or the pond in Burkitsville (on Rt. 17)? Or the mini lake (3-4 acres) between Brunswick & Burkitsville? It's just off Rt. 17 where the road makes the two 90 degree turns. The lake is hidden behind corn fields. Trying to find some unpressured fishing spots. Quote
Dypsis Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Southern Marylanders: Where do you all fish at? Does anyone know if Trinity Lake and Gilbert Pond (Not Gilbert Run Park) are public? Thanks! Quote

Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted August 22, 2014 Super User Posted August 22, 2014 Ran out of water last night. Lol That's your boat? Do you ever run up to Dam 5? Quote
nastynate Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 My boat. And yes I have ran up to dam 5. 1 Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted August 22, 2014 Super User Posted August 22, 2014 I ask because I believe I've seen that boat running up there before, just a couple weeks ago. Looked to be two guys and a girl in the boat. Quote
nastynate Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 Yea he likes running up there? He cracked the whole lower unit there back a month ago. Are buddy welded it up and she's good as new. Quote
Jeremy pharmareaps Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 Was up off bunker hill road toss in flies to some eager brownies on my 3wt. Netted a grand slam, brook,Brown, rainbow, and a huge surprise gunpowder smallmouth. I've never targeted or even seen them way up on gunpowder. Destroyed a large bugger and took off like a rocket on two pound tippet... got her to my feet and she darted way upriver stripping line and throwing some impressive leaps. Fun stuff on such light gear! URL=http://s1276.photobucket.com/user/pharmareaps/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140827_063614_zps3acc800c.jpg.html] Quote

Super User rippin-lips Posted August 30, 2014 Super User Posted August 30, 2014 Yeah I'm thrilled about it. It's one of the biggest fish I've heard of in my area of Md. Quote
