micorps Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 hello all im back in the dc area and finished a month long vacation to Northern MN for walleyes. my largest was 27" and was a blast. Great to see this thread is still going. Would be great to get into some walleyes out here. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted June 29, 2014 Super User Posted June 29, 2014 Sounds like a great trip Micorps, not a whole lot of walleye places in the DC area. Tridelphia has some, most are upper potomac in the washington county area and up and Deep Creek Lake. 1 Quote

I remember basser, I think, was catching some along the Potomac. he had some nice photos of walleyes. I found a couple ponds/lakes near manassas va with walleyes supposedly. Will let you know how it goes. http://takemefishing.org/fishing/places/bodyofwater/288826/#.U7AclSBOXIU Fishing in MN was great, and I brought plenty of northern pike back to pickle. I have my cousin's grand parents recipe for pickled fish. We caught so many walleyes also. Quote
KenLattimore Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Managed an outing today at Black Hills from 6-10:30am. Only managed two fish after switching to a wacky rigged senko, but both were decent size around 2-3 lbs. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted June 30, 2014 Super User Posted June 30, 2014 Would be great to get into some walleyes out here. Go fish Deep Creek in western MD for bass and you will catch them trust me. Walleye, pickerel, yellow perch, and northern pike were all caught last weekend while targeting bass. Allen Quote
Beef1020 Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Hi guys, new to the board and just got back into fishing. I grew up on lake linganore and fished as a kid, now I live there again and my six year old son got me back into it. Went down to the lake last weekend and we each caught a small largemouth, needless to say I think I found a new hobbie. 1 Quote
Snakehead Whisperer Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 hello all im back in the dc area and finished a month long vacation to Northern MN for walleyes. my largest was 27" and was a blast. Great to see this thread is still going. Would be great to get into some walleyes out here. Lake Brittle near Manassas and Burke Lake in Burke,VA both have walleye. As far as I know neither one supports a self sustained walleye population, but they are stocked. Burke Lake has some decent sized fish. The tidal Potomac in DC has decent numbers of walleye and there are some good sized fish in the 5+ lb range. The area above Harper's Ferry, WV around Dam 4 and 5 on the Potomac is even better for numbers and size, and there are also true strain muskie and tiger muskie in those waters. Like BrianinMD mentioned, Triadelphia and Rocky Gorge both contain walleye. Liberty Reservoir up near Baltimore also has decent walleye fishing. With the exception of the Potomac river all of these locations are electric only (as in no gas motors.) Triadelphia, Rocky Gorge and Liberty are pretty large and you'd need a serious electric rig to fish them effectively unless you have a kayak or similar. I'm by no means an expert walleye angler, but they are a relatively new species to me as I'm originally from northern California. It took me forever to boat my first. I started a thread about walleye fishing in winter on the tidal potomac here. Quote
Jtrout Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 I fished lake elkhorn yesterday on my lunch break for an hour I managed to find schooling bass in the middle of the lake. I landed 3 small ones pound each on texas rigged culprit 7.5 ribbon tail worm in tomato color. They were deep in cabbage thought they were bigger. Is there usually bigger bass hanging with the smaller ones? I'm going back today n gonna throw 10 inch worms n jigs. I'd like to hear your thoughts about how to get the bigger ones Quote
Jtrout Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Went back to lake elkhorn today on lunch found the school again. Didn't have 10 inch worms on me so I just threw the tomato culprits got couple bites then switched to black worm with sparkle and chartreuse tails and landed 3 more they were a little bigger than yesterday biggest went 1.7. Tried a jig got hung up to much. Quote
Bill Poch Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 I was going to go fishing at Hapers Ferry last night. The river level was perfect for wading. I got in 20 mins then this happen . . . Quote

Have you fished lake brittle or burke? saw on takemefishing.org that there are walleye there as well as Lake Anne right next to brittle. I don't have a boat out here due to storage hassles so will be looking for good off shore locations. Quote
Bill Poch Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Did you fall or did you hook something big? I was fighting a 485lb catfish on 12lb line for 3 hours and then my fishing rod gave way. Oh wait, that's what I tell people at work that will actually believe that. I wish it was something as simple as falling or big fish. My texas rigged craw got stuck so when I pulled on the line to see if I could get it out, BAM, snapped right in 1/2. Looking back, I suppose I'm to blame for 1) not grabbing the line at the end of the rod 2) being a budget fisherman and only paying 40 bucks for that rod. Funny thing is when I bought that Rod, I had a $50 gift card for Dicks and had the full intention of using that and some cash to see if I could pick up a rod around 80 bucks. I'm a budge fisherman not by choice, but because I have to be. Anyway, I wanted a 6 1/2 foot rod, but it has to be a 2 piece or it won't fit in my Jeep. Dicks didn't have anything in the 80 buck price range in 2 piece so I went with that 40 buck rod, actually, it may have been 30. I don't remember. Either way, I'm rod shopping when I get back from PA for the 4th of July. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted July 3, 2014 Super User Posted July 3, 2014 Try below dam 4 and 5 in the spring for walleye. Allen Quote

On a serious note, I bought some nice rods then got a gander mountain vortex that's short and perfect for jigging. It realed in a few 24" walleyes with it and was impressed considering it was on sale for 30-40 bucks at the time. I normally fish with the st Croix tournament legend but was impressed with the sensitivity of the vortex for the price. Not sure if they are still on sale online. Quote
micorps Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Try below dam 4 and 5 in the spring for walleye. Allen Thank you for the tip Munkin. I need to find some good walleye bait in the area. Would like to try out some local lakes this weekend that snakehead stated but need to find some crawlers or even leaches. Quote

Russell D Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 New to the board but not fishing in MD. I mostly fish out of my 18' Stratus, but also looking to start yaking in the fall. For the most part I fish the Susky river above and below the dam. I'll try to post weekly reports from these areas, but also looking for new bass boat friendly places to fish in MD. Last weekend the Conowingo lake was pretty tough in the evening, but I heard the bite was on well in the AM when they were running water. Tubes in crawfish colors were productive. Who else fishes these waters? Here's my father with a nice smallie from last month. Quote
wv Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Just want to check in here. We finally caught something last Thursday. Two small bluegills on Tiny Torpedoes in river...neither over 5 inches. Also made it to Black Hills last Sunday. It was big and crowded. Fished some near a boat ramp and up near Visitor Center. Didn't catch anything...looked like a good place for a boat. Hopefully didn't get a speed camera ticket. A big thank you to Brian for directions and some advice. Might go back later and avoid the weekend. Gonna try Cunningham Falls that Allen recommended next. Maybe we can actually catch a bass next time. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted July 7, 2014 Super User Posted July 7, 2014 Russell D, I love fishing Conowingo but usually only get up there in spring. The pic looks like Cono, definitely looks like one of the great smallies that place has. Otherwise only place I fish the Susky is about Harrisburg where the Juanita comes into it. For bass boat friendly places in Maryland, other than the upper bay. It would have to be the lower Potomac, most places in MD are electric only. You can still use you bass boat but not quite as fun as the places you can run full motor. Quote
