basser89 Posted February 15, 2010 Author Posted February 15, 2010 You can add West Virginia to your hibernating list. I have wanted to get out and try to find the warm-water deal in Williamsport. Last time there I couldn't seem to locate it. I would guess the river would really flood if the melt came fast. Fish probably get washed down or "hide" in little creeks etc, that run into the river. On a side note, good to see Bass Pro Shops got a Daytona 500 win Sunday. Too bad none in our area...they may be having some kind of specials to celebrate win. Trout stocking began in early January here...a little too cold for me and my son to get out yet. Also need license. Take care. I swear the only thing that's at dscharge in williamsport is rockbass. I caught a couple in january and have been there a couple times this month and I'm getting hits on soft plastics from them and that's it. Can't put my finger on what's changed there but the smallies have seemed to have abandon that place. I tried hitting PEPCO again yesterday. Rode the whole way down there just to find out they never plowed the lane and couldn't get back to the parking lot. It's getting very frustrating!!! Quote

I haven't been there since sunday. :-/ As I mentioned, when I was there the lane had not been plowed yet. I would've given it a shot but there was another 4x4 blocking the only spot where you turn off on to the lane. Won't be able to make it back there any time soon. Good luck and let us know how you make out if you do go! If anyone else has an update, please chime in!!! Quote
brian_82 Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 Anyone else getting that itch? The baitmonkey keeps calling at me from my basement closet. Quote
Smiths.R Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 I am going berzerk...I bought a Kayak this winter and every day it screams from my garage to put it in some water. Also, the BPS spring sale is coming. I think I might get a little silly down there on Friday. New rod/reel, and whatever else looks good. Thank God for tax time!! Quote
basser89 Posted February 24, 2010 Author Posted February 24, 2010 January and February have been rough for me. I've got out a few times as I've mentioned before but so far not a single bass. :'( My luck getting to the more productive warm water discharge has yet to happen. At least the Bait Monkey has kept the nervous twitch away somewhat. I've added a few new baits and rods to the arsenal. It looks like I won't be able to get out fishing this weekend so looks like March will be my chance to hit the water. Hopefully the snow keeps melting and I can actually get the boat out!!! I'll keep my fingers crossed on that one. LOL Hey mudkart, did you happen to make it out the other week? If so, how did you do? Quote
wv Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Just got my WV license on-line last night. Hope to get out soon. I turn 55 tomorrow and may go out just for something to do. Trout have been stocked locally since early January here. I cross river 5 times a week at Williamsport, MD and the river looks like it is clearing some even with all the snow melt. Too much water in river for us to get our 10 foot jon boat out. That will be about 4 months away I guess. I've been stocking up on some soft plastic baits. My son and I really like the Yum craw bugs and Dingers. Also got some Tubes, Chunks and Zoom Flukes over the winter. Got a new Zebco push button combo at Dick's in Martinsburg. We love fishing but are on a pretty tight budget. Hope to report some fishing news soon. Bring on some warmer weather. Quote
DaveT63 Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Hi all. Im pretty around here. I fish mostly in Southern Maryland, but may get on the Upper Potomac this year. Anybody else around here in SoMD? Last Sunday, I couldn't resist the itch anymore and hit the only one of the 4 ponds that wasn't frozen over on the local base. For the first time ever, my "one last cast before leaving" paid off with a 5 pounder. They are biting, albeit not often enough, if you can get out there. Hellbenderman Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Stopped off at Black Hills to look at the ducks today. Got a seagull to waddle after a Carolina Rig I threw out onto the ice. I figure this is your best shot at a really big bass this time of year. Drag a giant worm across the ice. Anything that could crash through the ice to go after your worm would no doubt be a real fish of merit. Quote
ichigo Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 hello i am from baltimore and i do fish upper and south potomac river and in loch raven resrvior as well i will joining a local torunament in potomac river this april so i hope i do well this year as 1st year torunament anlger Quote
Hellbenderman Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 Went down to Black Hills today to see some ducks. Still a good bit of ice about, but the ramp is open. Several very intrepid souls couldn't stand it any longer and were fishing from shore. I'm not that intrepid. Quote
basser89 Posted March 8, 2010 Author Posted March 8, 2010 I popped over there last thursday to check things out. I was surprised to see they took the gates away from the ramp with ice still being on the water. From what I recall, they used to keep the ramp blocked off until most of the ice was gone. I'm hoping to its not too long til the ice is gone and I can get the boat down there and do some real fishing myself! Quote
Hellbenderman Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 I thought it was odd that the barriers weren't there, but maybe they just open it March 1 no matter what. Just as likely someone stole them...hahaha. Today was soooo nice, but I am not going to jump the gun....maybe late March if we don't have another cold snap. Farmers Almanac says we are going to get another big storm in March. Thank God I'm not a farmer...sheeeesh. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted March 9, 2010 Super User Posted March 9, 2010 I went over to the canal at Dickerson for a couple hours yesterday. No ice but still very cold, only got one strike on a 3.5 inch Money Minnow. Was a nice fat 18 incher.... Quote
basser89 Posted March 9, 2010 Author Posted March 9, 2010 While the fishing has been slow for me in the past at B.H. after ice out, I have caught bass early on there. I may pop over there tomorrow for a lunch time outing at one of my favorite spots! ;D Nice Brian! Is the ice completely off the canal now? I don't care if I have to walk the C&O canal from williamsoport, I'm fishing PEPCO this weekend!!!! And I'm not leaving there until I catch a bass!!! ;D Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted March 9, 2010 Super User Posted March 9, 2010 Basser, yeah the ice was all gone from the canal but I don't think the water temp was much over 40. There were a bunch of people fishing the first but only one other person on the canal. I didn't see him catch anything. No fishing this weekend for me, next trip will be the tournament on the 20th. Quote
basser89 Posted March 9, 2010 Author Posted March 9, 2010 Cool deal! Thanks for the heads up! I've caught decent bass out of there before in COLD temps, ya just need to slow down and down size like you did. Good luck with the tournament! Keep us posted on how you do! Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted March 9, 2010 Super User Posted March 9, 2010 Thanks, I just hope for two things for the tourney, I do better then I did there last saturday, and less wind. Quote
Smiths.R Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 This nice weather was to much to bear. Went out for the first time yesterday to Loch Raven. Saw one fish (big pickerel) but no bites. I don't even care. It was just nice to let the lures swim a bit. The coming spring rains will warm up that water soon. I can't wait!! JigMe Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 I went down to Centennial Lake yesterday for an hour and half after work, and got a catfish using a 4" fat senko. It was giving me a good fight, and I though I have landed a good bass. I was so disappointment when I saw it's a d**n catfish. Quote
Hellbenderman Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Have you seen the weather report? I'm not thinking there is going to be a lot of fishing this weekend. They are talking 2 to 4 inches of rain. Thank God it's rain! Quote
basser89 Posted March 12, 2010 Author Posted March 12, 2010 Yeah, I saw the report but I'm still going out somewhere. I wanted to hit PEPCO but the river gauge I follow was at 10.81 and rising FAST so that game plan is out. There's a couple of ponds I can hit and the C&O canal here in Williamsport. I got rain gear, and the bass are already wet so I'm still good! ;D Quote
basser89 Posted March 13, 2010 Author Posted March 13, 2010 I attempted to hit dam 4 this morning. Ha ha ha ha ha! Um, the river was only at 18 feet then. Most of the time, I was literally standing on the tow path fishing the river (where I could). Needless to say, didn't stay there long. Popped over to the C&O canal in Williamsport. Surprisingly, I found clear water! Worked some small plastics for a while and wasn't having any luck. Picked up a jerkbait and was fishing it a little while and just wasn't having any action. Thought to myself, did this rain a cooler temps shut them down? For grins, I started really working the jerkbait real irractic. All of a sudden, I saw a bass come up and miss the bait. Not 2 minutes later, same deal! Started tweaking the cadance and finally figured it out! Ended up with 5 small keepers on 2 colors of the Smithwick Rattlin Rogues. Finally, that monkey is off my back! ;D Quote
