The picture I posted upthread is from that stretch, there is some good looking water there but it got a lot lot lot of pressure this past year.  It also got stocked with trout on Tuesday, so plan to get there early for parking.

Spinners and shallow, smaller cranks work really well in that river.  I used to fish the Hollofield section at the bottom of the River Ridge trail, usually no issues with swimmers, and always caught lots of bass, some between 1-2 lbs.  I think the section you're targeting has a bit more pressure on it because it's easier to access and often choked with waders/swimmers and people leaving trash(mostly baby diapers) all over the place.  This time of year it should have less of that though.

Hi all, I have been targeting trout the last month but with water temps up, this might be the last really good weekend with water temps above 65. I got a nice bass last night in the tidal basin and am gonna make a run to near Point of Rocks This afternoon. Flows are very low and perfect for wading the big river. Hope to get some big smallies on the pre winter feedbag.

Tried it several times in Long Arm Reservoir, PA without any success. I saw tons of crawfish there, may be I fail to present it right manner. I just slowly drag it on the bottom...

Does it seem to work? It looks really good, some of those "real" craws aren't durable though.

It's really durable, it survived wrapped over line, it survived many challenges, however, I had no opportunity to catch anything on it. Maybe it's just my bad luck

That lure will definitely work.  I have something similar I made myself (though it's a hard bait) and it's been really good.

I'm hoping to hit POR Wednesday, but the weather looks like trash now.

 

Fished Tom's Creek yesterday for about 40 minutes at lunch time, and caught five 8-12 inch bass(2 largemouth, 3 smallmouth).  This warm spell is getting them active.

Not much to report back home, but snuck away to Deep Creek for a few days. I was told by some local to fish large minnows and boy they did not disappoint. 

 

I know this is a bass forum, but today's haul was three perch, three pickerel (one being 22 inches) and finally the relevant part, a 10 inch small mouth.

Yup, it's a Monocacy tributary at the upper end.  It's roughly 30 miles long or so.  The place I fish at is restricted access, but there are probably some other spots down below Emmitsburg that are pretty good.  It's also got a couple of big tributaries of it's own (Middle Creek and Flat Run) that might hold fish, not sure.

There are lots of “OK to decent” spots around there but few great ones.  Pretty much every park pond you can spot on google maps holds bass and a lot of the random looking ponds have access or at least are not posted.  Allen Pond/Governor’s Bridge/Melford all have bass and are within a minutes drive of each other.  Cash Lake is decent if you have a yak and Pax Ponds park is small but reasonable.  You also have Walking Fish Pond right in Crofton, but I haven’t been there in years and it might be posted now due to some very close development.  There are also some spots that are less “official” but still somehow not posted, Most of them require little bit of hiking to get to. Shoot me a PM if you’re interested in that sort of thing, they all require a little hiking/bushwhacking to really access.  
 

The Crofton area also puts you in striking distance of a lot of the southern Maryland spots down Route 3, that’s a whole other discussion but if you don’t mind driving 45-60min, then you have a lot of options.

Took a quick hike down Swain's to the big rock with a stogie and an BFS rod with just an in-line spinner around 4:30PM. Water level is about the same as normal, but there's a lot of floating duckweed and algae left over from last year still. I didn't have a lot of open areas to cast, but I got one hit in the wide shallow area. Lots of carp were schooled up and spawning, and lots of blue gill were active. I only saw 2 decent sized bass, but they're getting active too. With all the duckweed and algae right now, I think it'll be an early frogging season in this stretch. Oh, and I got bombarded by mosquitos in an area where there's standing water on the other side of the towpath.....ugh.

Allen's Pond in Bowie has started to become good. 

 

Last week, a small 13in largie on a small swimbait. 

 

Yesterday, three bass, from 12-13 inches, one a white micro zman chatterbait and two on a mepps white #3. 

First time seriously spring fishing and I cannot wait to start hitting rivers for smallies.

Went to Widewater around 4:30PM and started on the Burma Rd side, water is really low, I was able to walk pretty far along the rocks after getting to the first big rock. I threw a spinnerbait and paddle tail through, under, and around all the timber and got a couple nibbles, but I'm pretty sure they were just spawning crappie. I saw several of them swimming near one of the big laydowns. Next I walked up and around to the towpath side and threw in the pool below the lock. Nothing here either, and again the water was really low so I was able to climb down and parallel the towpath down on the exposed rocks. It was getting dark so I hustled to the big bridge and the pool next to also had exposed banks so I walked around and didn't get anything but snot grass. Walking back to the towpath I was just casting at 45 degrees out and finally got a bite on the paddletail. A 1.5lber, but wide shoulders and not as cold as I thought she'd be. Widewater should turn on soon though. I will probably fish this or go for shad until my new boat numbers come in.

I also live in Westminster.  Just got back into fishing last year and haven't hit the reservoirs yet.  Have no idea where to start on a place to go.  Have just been pond fishing besides an occasional trip to Western MD.  Good luck this year.

First top water of the year today. Got 4 on the large Boss Pop. I got a few skipping flukes and sub waking square bills yesterday, so I was pretty sure they would bite it. They were cornering gills and crayfish up against rocks in a small feeder creek hard, so I'll be bringing some pruners to get back there and combat flip to them tomorrow.

Maiden voyage on my new rig, I originally wanted to break in the engine on the Potomac, but it took me about 2 hours to find boat numbers, those 3" stickers after driving to two different Home Depot and a Lowe's. But when I was ready to go, it was already 1:30PM so I decided to just hit Little Seneca Lake and mess around with the electronics. She's fast, about 3.6mph on the graph and I could hit spots on the lake which I never did before in a timely manner.

Got to the shallow end near the houses and I got 3 on laydowns that extended into 5-8 feet of water. Probably could have gotten a couple more, but my fishing muscles are out of shape and I was tired, so I lit up a stogie and trolled half speed back to the ramp and and enjoyed the scenery.

Nice, I'm jelly. Water temp at Little Seneca was 63 and I wanted to throw some top water, but I didn't bring any.

You got a new boat? Needs snakehead slime...

Water warmed up to quickly for my liking this year, the 2 cold days did wonders for one outing this week, but the fish are already staging on nests and getting picky. Very different than last year.

I want to get bit on the t-rig to test the power of new rod, but not a single hit.  Over like 8 trips I have caught dozens and dozens of tiny tiny bass on the jighead, but tie the t-rig on and nothing.  It's unfathomable that it keeps happening and I am going a little crazy I think.  

 

I am going to stop and switch to a popper for my afterwork trips for a while, I think that will improve my mood.

Yep, finally got the missus to sign off and needed 4 seats for the family. C&O from Swains downward will be frogging season by May, there's so much left over duckweed and grass from last year. Very different year indeed, hopefully we don't have weeks and weeks of rain followed up 40's in late April like last year.

It's kind of a pain to take in and out of the garage, but maybe after I get it down pat it'll be easier. You better have your popper skills sharpened for the hydrilla edges at Mattawoman.

At long last, I have given in to the call of the popper.  I still think walking lures are more fun to fish but I can't argue with results.

I was on the other end of the spectrum last weekend - Took a trip to Deep Creek where the only thing on top of the water was skim ice .

 

Caught a couple smallies, but the bass fishing was a bit off...Thankfully the walleyes were spawning and I caught probably 20+ in only a few hours, none were big but it was fast action and a lot of fun.  Every time I came to an ideal spot, a group of large boulders usually, I'd get 3 to 5 in a row.  And yea, that's snow in the background and on the docks, they got a couple inches the day before I went up.  Surface temps were 40 to 43 and every single bite was on a jerkbait.
