Let me know if you want to go April 29th, maybe get there around 7AM, fish until 11, then grab a sandwich and beer! I can hit my neighborhood pond and get some blue gills to live line too.

I would love to!  I will shoot you a PM tonight or tomorrow and we can work it out.

I was out messing around with my new jig rod and was pitching to a pile of brush located in a 3' hole in a 1'-6" deep side channel.  Just messing around working the jig through the branches and seeing how the rod felt when I suddenly felt a hit.  It's a new rod a a pretty sensitive one, so I thought I had just snagged a springy branch.  But on the next pitch I was ready and got this little guy.

I was pleased to see him hit a jig that large, especially after maybe 10-12 pitches to the same very small brush pile.  I guess he got sick of me hitting him on the head.

I got a a nicer one on a chatterbait and it was the "perfect" bite.  I was slow rolling it on the bottom when suddenly the blade stopped moving and I set the hook.  The hook got him right on the roof of his mouth, no chance of him getting off.

Hit Lake Needwood after kids' swim practice for an hour.  Water was muddy, about 4-6" visibility, but the weather was great. I was hoping to get into some bedding bass, but didn't see much activity other than a couple bluegill here and there. Used a 4.3" green pumpkin Keitech Fat Impact rigged weedless and a wacky rigged purple senko and got nothing. Wonder where the spawning bass are.

Lots of people fishing for the stocked trout.

What's expected of the co-angler typically? Gas money and launch fee? I bought a used 14' bass boat and want to learn the Potomac, and figure co-angling is probably the best way...as I have no idea since I've only fished from the shore along Ft. Washington and the Tidal Basin.

Try Mattawoman Creek, further down Indian Head Hwy at the end. Free boat launch and great bass and snakehead fisheries.

Been mentioned already, but you had it right...Chip in for gas, ramp, etc.

There's a big club local to you that's always open for membership ;) (see signature)...It's a good way to get started!

Went to loch raven for the first time today from 6:30am to 12:30pm. Was with a buddy who knows the lake well. First hump he put us on I catch my PB pickerel and he catches a big yellow perch. After that it was really slow. He caught two bass later, the best around 3 lbs. Such a beautiful day, wish we were still out there.

Left the bass alone at a local spot with clear water. Actually saw quite a few spawning. One nest had a nice sized female with 3 males alternating between doing the dance and chasing each other away. They should be done in the next few days, then the swim jig and topwater will get a workout. Pickerel fishing was still very good (I can't remember a better year for numbers and size) AND caught my PB crappie (on a 1/2 oz spinnerbait) almost 15". so a good day.

Been having the worst start of my fishing season. I have been out to Greenbelt Lake and Lake Artemesia for the past one month. Only caught one little dink so far. I think its due not having grass yet at the banks. I know there are bass there cuz i saw a 5 lber and he wouldn't bite it. Its because he saw me :)

Hope that the month of may will be much better.

the rivers are the place to be. They warm up faster. It'd a VERY slow spring this year.

Is Artemesia good? I live nearby but never went. Assumed very high pressure.

Good to know! Greenbelt not as good? I'm sure I'll see you there at some point. Whats the biggest one you've seen come out of there? Artemesia I mean

The water was stained so there wasn't any sight fishing to confirm any beds. You can assume the carousel of males and females on the beds is on though.

Met up with @fishwizzard at the Tidal Basin yesterday morning on an incoming tide around 7AM. Conditions were tough, it was windy and seemed to be getting colder throughout the morning. We found a spot that was decently protected from the wind near one of the tidal inlets. There were a lot of shad, or herring along the wall, and saw SH coming up for air every 10 minutes or so. We tried jerkbaits, lipless cranks, spinnerbaits, paddletails, inline spinners, creature baits....but nothing. Chalked it up to too much baitfish to compete with, although we tried to make our presentations stick out from the real stuff and left around 9:30AM.

Fishwizzard can really sling the rod, has good form and keeps those elbows tucked in.

And this was a first for me at the tidal basin...a decent sized beaver that scared the bejesus out of me...he crept up along the tidal wall from my backside and I saw him from my peripheral and thought it was a 2' rat...by the time I got my phone out he started making his way out to the other side.

Junger was not kidding about the wind, it was nuts.  I have also never fished around so many shad before, there was a 1' band of them running along the wall we were fishing off of, so thick I bet I could have grabbed one with my hand.

I don't know what's going on with this spring.  I fished a small lake today for the first time in weeks, I went expecting a lot of vegetation but there was almost nothing emerging yet.  I have never seen it take this long for stuff to start growing in.  I managed two turbo-dinks on a trickworm and had a huge blow up on the same which resulted in the bass popping my hook out and me setting it into a floating log.

I fought that log for like 45 shameful seconds before I realized it wasn't a monster bass.

How is the Leesylvania State Park area ? Got a local club tournament going on there this weekend.

I have never personal fished there. What are they biting now and is it already post spawn ?

What fishing pattern should I be aiming for to get those fat girls :)

We have like 70 boats out of there this weekend as well. Find the green gold and you will find some fish. Black, brown and orange colors in various baits.

The Ned Rig is for real! It's something I was eyeing up all winter to learn. After registering my boat trailer at the MVA, I headed over to Whetstone to get the lines wet. Brought 2 rods, one rigged with a Keitech 4.8" and a TRD coppertreuse. Fished the spots to the right of the boat house, alternating rods. The Ned Rig caught 5 (1 decent and 4 dinks), and the Keitech 1, but it was the biggest at about 2.5lbs. Definitely going to keep one rod rigged with the Ned at all times.

I went and hit Cash Lake in my yak today.  Spend most of it up in the pad fields.

C5D5Mihl.jpg

I got this guy right off the bat, he hit at the end of my cast and I thought I had a monster bass on the line.

DMfGgGUl.jpg?1

I did end up with some bass, with maybe 4 around this size.

FxbCu3Ll.jpg?1

The pick and one of the bass came off a paddletail run through the pads, one on a neko rigged trick worm, one on a wacky jig trick worm, and the last one on a spinnerbait I was aimless casting around the middle of the lake.  Could not find a patten at all nor could I find any bass beds.  Saw a ton of panfish on beds though.

Man I cannot bring myself to throw a buzzbait when there is any light out.  I just see it in the water and think "man, that isn't going to fool anything".  I will throw and catch on equally outlandish lures in the middle of the afternoon, but for some reason "buzzbait=dark" is burned into my brain.

Finally got a nice bass from my kayak this year;

NeOp1Owl.jpg

4eKY0qil.jpg

If his butt was as big as his head he would have been a real monster.

I also got a pickerel who swarmed up from about 5-6' of water to smash an S-Waver right as I was about to lift it out of the water.

BXDh4xul.jpg

I want to start throwing more big baits in here as I have seen some real bruisers on beds, but the picks really give me pause.

Those big bass will be coming off the beds in the next few days. A popper, swim jig and frog will catch them as well as anything else from now though the summer. If you want to throw the big (size and money) baits, use a 20-30 lb mono leader, and you won't loose them. I've been fishing straight 15 lb Big Game, and haven't lost a single lure even though some were completely in the mouth, or badly nicked. Just check it after each fish (or bite).
