Piney Run Res. is the most frustrating body of water I have ever fished

Went out to a small pond this afternoon.

Right under 2lbs, which is not bad for the pond he was in.  It was a satisfying catch as I got him off the a very obvious bit of cover, it was nice to be rewarded for reading the water.  Got him on a wacky senko.  Got a dink or two the same way, then an other almost 2lb one off of a white fluke.  The fluke was constantly under attatch by small, like 10-12", pickerel.  I only landed a handful but they would swipe at it almost every third or fourth cast.  They hit it hard too;

 

Those Owner twistlock keepers really do the job.

Hah, yea, the bulkhead does give it away.  

 

I wanna try to drag my kayak out there tomorrow, that place really opens up if you can fish it from the water, all those weedlines and clumps of pads are great in the later spring but should be decent by now.  

 

That place drives me nuts, it seems like there must be bass under that dock, but I have thrown everything I can think of up under there to no effect.

Yeah cash lake is a tough spot seems like the best area is off limits only pulled a few outta ther under 3 lbs. Seen some 26in+ pickerel come out of there.

Yeah, it is only OK if one is stuck on the bank.  I do like it as it is a good spot for fishing a fluke, which is a favorite lure of mine.  However, this is what really keeps me coming back;

I fished the Chicamuxen yesterday in the DE federation tournament and weighed 5 for 14.8. Got em on a pit boss in the thick stuff. Not sure where we finished yet.  There were 40 some boats.

Today started small;

Then it got a little bigger, this tough SOB looked to be missing half of his tailfin

And had a dead eye as well

Then I caught his fat wife and called it a day;

All these fish and a few other small ones were caught on a Daiwa BBB telescoping casting rod I picked up over the winter.  Other then today, I used it this spring in Miami to catch some small peacocks and a few tilapia.  Once I get more time on it I will post a review, so far it seems like a great rod and with a compact reel, make the best traveling combo I have yet found.  

 

As a bonus, I found a Pop-X and caught a fish with it on my second cast;

I have never fished a popper much before, but I kinda dig it.  I was using an ML spinning reel at the time and I swear I can cast this lure further then I can a 1/4oz drop shot weight.

Pop-x's are heavier than a 1/4 oz. That's why you can really launch them a good distance!

Got out yesterday, and hung 2 real ones on a chatterbait(plus 2 big pickerel) 6, and a tad under 8. I feel like wearing a cape. And just to be fair and balanced, last week  caught one just a tad bigger than the pop-R he hit from the same spot.

I hit some ponds yesterday and managed about a dozen, all in this range;

Sadly with most at the smaller end.  However, every fish came on a crankbait, which has never happened for me.  I worked the first pond for like two hours with a wacky senko to no effect but as soon as I tied a crank on, it was instant action.  

 

I got most of them on one of the Booyah Prank lipped popper.  I have never gotten one to pop well, but I am really starting to like them as a 12-18" running crank.  They look a bit like a jointed Rapala, but with a much broader wiggle and the long flash on the rear hook makes them really stand out in stained water.  

 

No luck today, but I got to see a nice big snapper grab a bulegill off some guy's stringer.

Got my first smallies of the year today in the Little Pax.  This guy was the best one;

He jumped right away, shook the lure, then immediately grabbed it again.  Jumped a few more times before I could get him in.  

 

I also saw something kinda odd.  At a pool at the base of a small section of falls, I saw dozens of dozens of fish that I couldn't ID.  They were quite large, ranging from 9 to like 20".  Silver/gray in color, with a tallish body, almost like a white perch, but more round overall.  They had noticeable pectoral fins, but I didn't notice any barbels.  They had a sharp looking V shaped tail fin.  I was fishing a Ned rig and they would run from it if I ran it through the school and would ignore it.  They ignored it if I dead sticked on the bottom and retrieved it with slow drags.  I tried to get some pictures but the glare was too bright.  

 

I thought they were fall fish, but they will often hit a Ned and I fished this pool for like a hour.  They seems to be trying to get up the falls, as they we most thickly congregated by the largest flow over.  Could they have been shad?  It is driving me crazy trying to figure out what they are, almost enough to go back with a net.

I saw a few fish like that on the Little Patuxent late last year.  Not that many, though, two or three at a time (if they were even different fish) swimming together.  I thought they were trout but when I got a better look they were almost solid gray in color and had more of a football shape.

Sounds like shad or alewives, but it's amazing how difficult it is to identify fish in the water sometimes.

I do think now that they were shad, but I am amazed at their size at that location, they had to get through some super skinny water to get to that pool.  I only had Ned Rig stuff with me, I gotta start carrying some tiny panfish lures when I go wading.  

 

I also saw like three snakeheads in the same pool, coming up to breathe.  They had no interest in the Ned at all and I was trying some absurd tackle combos to try to get one to hit.  The silliest being a Z-man tube, totally filled with Megastrike, nose hooked on a random like #1 baitholder hook I found snagged in a bush.  I was trying to pop it across the surface to get their attention, but nothing.  Thinking back, I had some worm weights on me, should have gone for a hillbilly drop shot rig.  I guess I also have to start making sure I have at least one spinner bait on me as well.  

 

I hit Allen Pond today and surprisingly caught a few.  I am trying to pare down and simplify my tackle collection and today's trip was to work with some 7" Culprits ribbon tails that i am trying to make a go of.  Well, the bass were having none of it.  Then I found a bag of Zoom black/redflake lizards sitting on the bank with two left in it.  I put one on and caught a small bass almost instantly.  I worked the dock a little and managed these two. 

I will go like a dozen trips there before I catch anything, three in one day is crazy for me.  Now I guess I gotta buy some lizards to go with the trick worms and ribbon tails.

I always have some of the black lizards with red flakes and black with a blue tail i use more lizards nowadays than ribbon tail worms.

Yea, I am kinda regretting going so heavy on the 7" Culprits.  I randomly got a pack of the 6" Fat Maxs and think I prefer them as a small ribbon tail. But now I am thinking that lizards fill almost the same niche as a small ribbon tail worm.  Maybe just a pack of the Black/reds and one of like pumpkinseed/chart tail?

Hello All,

 

Recently got back into fishing after finishing my graduate program. I live in Baltimore County and prefer to fish non-tidal lakes, ponds, reservoirs etc. I would really appreciate some local areas pond or fishing area recommendations - I usually hit Centennial park and will expand to Wilde Lake next most likely.

 

I am also looking to link up with other bass anglers or groups... don't know if I am quite ready for a fishing club but curious to see whats out there. If interested, send me a PM and we can compare schedules.

Just my normal heads up, June 3rd is my clubs first tourney at Black Hills for the year. Will be around 18-20 boats going in and out, ramp will get a little busy.....

Wilde Lake is decent...some good size fish but may take some figuring out.  Over half the lake is shut down from fishing due to a "Swan Refuge" (even though I havent seen a swan there in years).  Lake Elkhorn has numbers but usually not many of good size (although fish over 5 lb have been caught).  Also Elkhorn is usually full of grass but weedless presentations work well.  I've caught a little bit at Lake Roland around Towson, but dont have it figured out yet.  A small pond that is fun is Patterson Park in Baltimore City.  Can usually get something there on a worm.

I am thinking about hitting Centennial tomorrow.  I have been having some luck lately on lizards worked around rip rap, so I am eyeing that nice long dam.   Other then that, does anyone have any pointers for Centennial in general?  I have fished maybe an hour there total and don't have a good idea what to expect.

Ive fished there a few times only caught a few small ones on square bills by the rocks. Fished a tournament there last year didnt catch anything from a jon boat. There are some big ones in there i seen a dead five pounder floating.
