Blues and flatheads are considered invasive species just like the snakehead. They are all over the lower Potomac, 40 to 60 pound fish are pretty common with them. Nothing like fishing a jig, get bit and when you set the hook on what you think is a bass only to have it be a 40lb catfish......

I am heading out to fish the canal for a day or so.  Going to start at Swains and keep going north until I find fish.

I have caught like ten bass in the last two days, but they were all under 12".  The big ones have to be around somewhere, right?

I was rolling a spinnerbait around docks last May by Hallowing pt and got blasted by a 20lb cat. Followed that up with a 10lber on a swing head and rage bug.....very disappointing

Yeah, it feels great when you first set the hook and you get that nice solid stop. thoughts of a good bass go away quickly when the cat takes off.....

No doubt....made me really trust 12lb sensithin....he ran me under the dock and I pulled him back out with minimal damage to the line....I was shocked. If it were a bass it would have chafed off lol

Had a long, almost fruitless day yesterday in Charles county.  Hit a few spots, everywhere was muddy and there was little signs of grass or pads.  Managed a single dink on a WP 90 right at dusk in Myrtle Grove. Today I went to get my reservoir pass and fished the bank at Rocky Gorge for a bit.

I was walking the bank throwing a lipless crank when I saw this dead shad.  I thought "man, I have a lure that looks just like that" and tied it on.

About three casts later, I got this fella;

If I am only going to get one, this is it's a bad one to get.

I have that same spinner and it's always been the most productive one for me at rocky gorge, now i see why haha. With the water levels there now i can see how far off I have been guessing about the structure. Got out to the canal above Old Anglers in on Tuesday, only had a couple real small bass bite. There were a few 18-20"ers on beds, but no dice.

Wish I didn't have work during the week - then i could hit bass and trophy rock over the next month!

Do you know which model it is? I got it a year or two ago from some huge lot on eBay, and I don't remember the manufacturer and model. I think it's a Strike King maybe?

Flukes are about my favorite bait to fish, good to hear they are working already.

Spent this afternoon farting around Northwest Branch near TP.  The last two years I have been pleasantly surprised with the numbers of small bass I have managed to pull out of there.  While I got a couple today, there was no where near the action I was getting last spring.

If any of you all care, the white perch seem to be about to hit full swing.  I am taking my bfs trout combo out tomorrow to see how it works for them.

Walked the canal today looking for bass. I started off looking for beds but the overcast conditions made it difficult. I worked this one bed for 20 minutes then found the sweet spot. I felt bad after this male looked pretty beat up.

Made a move north up the canal and found bass in the upper reaches had not spawned yet. It was raining lightly so I pulled out the buzzbait. As it turned out there was an extremely good topwater bite. I caught around 10 in an hour. Seemed like every likely spot had a fish on it.

Damm dude, that is some fine work.  I did Swains to Pennyfield the other day and got some dinks, but nothing exciting.

I fish this stretch very frequently and frankly most days it is not this good. I think the key factor was the overcast conditions. The fish I caught were all in less than a foot of water. I like targeting shore vegetation because it gives me a shot at snakeheads, which seem to hang extremely shallow, right up against the bank.

Got a couple smallmouth yesterday on the skinny "river" near my house, one 12" and another 11."  Also lost one that was around 12 and another around 10.  Also caught a fallfish, but those little b astards shouldn't count for anything.  Interest was half and half on swimbaits and Z-Man TRD finesse worms.

Finally got the chance to get out on the Upper Potomac Sunday morning for the first time this year. Did OK, but the fishing was pretty slow, especially early morning. Picked up a bit once the sun got a little higher in the sky later in the morning. Water was 59-60 warming to 62 by early afternoon and water was surprisingly clear for the amount of rain we have gotten recently. We ended up with 14. Most were caught in less than 2' of water next to the banks where the sun was warming the water. We did pick up 1 or 2 in the current breaks behind rocks in the main part of the river. All but one were caught on 2.75" and 3" tubes. The other was caught on a 5" carolina rigged senko. Most bites were pretty light. Couldn't get bit on anything else. The biggest went 20" and 3# 10oz. My new personal best.
