Guys I caught a really weird bass:

I'm in Miami for work but had some time today.  Hit a canal and caught this guy and a pile of small LBMs.

I hope there is still some action at home, I have the next two weeks off and want to do nothing but fish.

Nice, I could survive for months on Cubano sandwiches.

Oh man I know. Only been here since Monday and I've had two of them so far.   I think I've had roast pork with about every meal so far. I have to do a lot of bank walking in the next two weeks to burn all of this off.

I have Thurs-Saturday off, and I am going to try to fish every day.  Going to hit a bunch of ponds and see if anything is awake.  I usually hit the PG and Charles ponds as well.  If you see a bearded white guy with a short rod cussing about backlashes, come over and say hi.

I also got mad at work today and ordered two Hudds, a 68 Special in Rainbow and a Weedless Gill.  I finally have a rod that can throw bigger baits, so I wanna see how they work.   I got the weedless versions of both, but it is going to take some time before I am happy about throwing $25 into a weedline.

Let me know how you do on the hudds. I have a 68 and a 8inch I started throwing last year with no success.  But have had some success on gantarels and other big glide baits.  Got a 316 wake Jr I can't wait to try and a deps 250.  Trying out some ponds in Delaware this weekend.

Nice fish! I fish there a lot and knew there was some big ones in there but the best I have done is just shy of 4.

Anyone know of anyone willing to rent out storage for my boat ;) I'm located in Germantown, MD with no storage space for my 14" jon. Just thought I would hit the boards to see if anyone here or know of someone that would like to make some extra cash on the side. Thanks in advance!

I looked like crazy when i lived down there, moved Oct 1st. Only places i could find had no power. There is a storage place by 118 and Wisteria that is 24 hour access.

Hopefully you can find someplace, craigslist has places every now and then. I just did not find one i liked.

Are you looking for indoor storagw or would outdoor work?

Indoor just so the boat is out of the elements. Especially if power is there charging the batteries.

Got you, I was thinking of someone with outdoor space.

I went out this morning to try them out.  Both are pretty hard for me to cast with any real accuracy, but after an hour or so I could at least hit a weed line at 40-50'.  The 68 has an amazing action on a super slow retrieve, I really wish I had made it out to this spot within a few days of the last trout stocking.  It runs through sparse pads very well, but I think less expensive lure like a RI Big Dipper might be a more practical option for that presentation.  I think it's real value is going to be running open areas, once I get more skilled in casting it. I didn't get any attention from fish on it, but had a rather large turtle follow it for a few retrieves.  I have a bad feeling that this lure is going to meet it's end to a snapper.

The gill was less impressive at first, with little action at low speed and only a very subtle one at a quick retrieve.  But after running it through a group of actual gills and scattering them, it does like very very much like a scared gill just hauling butt away.  It also skips very well and I quickly improved my close range accuracy with it.  It seems much less weedless then the 68, both the actual hook and the more prominent fins.  I think this one will see more use than the 68, as sunfish of that size are very common in most of the spots I fish.  Because I use my frog rod to throw these, I am going to need to get a second spool so I can swap out while fishing.  I can see carrying it to use when I find a spot of clear water in the summer while out frogging.

Now I just need to think up a way to carry them when hiking.  I can only carry a single 3600 box in my pack, and that gill is big.  I am thinking something like a thick and semi rigid plastic envelope maybe?

Yeah I got some bait wraps off Amazon for some of the skinnier swimbaits.  I went cheap and they don't hold the bigger baits.  But it makes it easy to add to my bag without a while nother Plano case. I threw a swaver 168 today and really like that action also.

Good deal today so I gotta tell someone.

3 new lews custom speed sticks for 125!!!!! A 7-6 heavy cover, a 7-3 mag hammer, and the finess jig rod. I am out of town for my mothers 60th B day weekend and the local shop had them marked down to 60 each. After some negotiations I split with 3 for 125. My face hurts from smiling all day.

For sure.....woke up this morning w an ear to ear smile (might be permanent). Now I gotta put reels and line on em. I have an MB 7 ratio for the mag heavy cover, so I need a 6 ratio for the hammer, and the door is open on the finess jig rod. 50 braid on the MHC, 14lb FC on the hammer, and gotta figure out that finess jig rod. Might set that up skipping rod. I can fish em all next Sat on the Potomac. Going to prefish for a tourney and I bet the MHC and hammer will get used alot in and around grass.

Any advice for Mattawoman Creek? Buddy and I fished this weekend and both got skunked. Not so much as even a bite. Any advice? Was our first time there.

Mattawoman is a huge creek, where were you fishing exactly?  You launch out of slavins?

That place is feast or famine, and certainly not the fishery it was a few years ago. That being said, its still very good. I break it down to three sections and treat each as a separate body of water. From the mouth to Smallwood, Smallwood to Mattingly, and "The creek" as I call it up to the 224 bridge. The wind on saturday probably made it tough. This time of year, I like to work deeper pockets with a lipless and spinnerbait to locate fish. I like it after the spawn for topwater and flipping up shallower in the spadders. One really needs to spend some time there, it's a tough place to hit once in a blue moon, and speaking of moon, the tides can play havoc with one's plan. There are areas that are productive at certain stages and not at others, and some that can only be fished at or near high/low, on the in or out. It's tricky, but some guys (not this one) have it dialed in.

Yes I did. From there I went left and deepest was maybe 12'. I am going to try right side next.

Document tube, disposable tupperware thing, thin pvc conduit. They sell surf bag inserts, but most guys just cut pvc to size for those too.

Had a long, almost fruitless day yesterday in Charles county.  Hit a few spots, everywhere was muddy and there was little signs of grass or pads.  Managed a single dink on a WP 90 right at dusk in Myrtle Grove. Today I went to get my reservoir pass and fished the bank at Rocky Gorge for a bit.

I was walking the bank throwing a lipless crank when I saw this dead shad.  I thought "man, I have a lure that looks just like that" and tied it on.

About three casts later, I got this fella;

If I am only going to get one, this is it's a bad one to get.

Nice bass, Charles County bass are on the beds. I did crush big pickerel on Sunday, one of my best days with them, I did manage to get the front hook of a long a in my thumb past the barb while the tail hook was still attached to a pickerel. Turned out ok all things considered.

Are the Lilly pads grown out yet? If not I would wait for the pads to in full bloom

Nice fish bunnie lab!  I've only gotten sinks so far at lake Elkhorn.  Lendiesel great score on those rods, I love mine, won them all in raffles but probably still paid closer to cost.

Finally something decent on the Little Patuxent, a 12"+ smallmouth.  Hadn't caught much this year except a couple dinks and a bunch of fallfish (which fight like wet socks).

You know its been to long when it feels good just to retie and get boat ready. All the pics of good fish and reports while i was sidelined. But now knee is healed enough to get back out Saturday. Heading down to the lower Potomac for some of the big largemouth being caught.

Walked the canal looking for bass today. Didn't get any hits but saw a pretty nice 3.5 sitting by a log. Showed no interest in anything I tried throwing. I switched to sunfish hoping to salvage the day. Unfortunately the sunfish bite wasn't great either. I kept 3 and chunked them by the river. Pulled up 2 flatheads at roughly 10 and 6lbs, both loaded with eggs.

Interestingly enough when I tried this last year I only caught blues and one very small flathead. This year all of my bites have been from flatheads. They don't seem to be as widespread as blues but I'm pretty sure there is a local population spawning a few miles above D.C.
