Fried Lemons Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Good conditions today. I decided to try and go big with a 10.5" worm and got this on my 2nd cast. 5 Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted August 10, 2016 Super User Posted August 10, 2016 Man, that is bigger then four or five of my usual canal bass combined. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted August 10, 2016 Super User Posted August 10, 2016 Another solid WMD fish. No scale but it's a solid 5 if not close to 6. Size 10 shoe for reference. Got that bite in the first 11 minutes and nothing after that. 3 Quote
S10rman88 Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 Haven't posted much at all this summer but the fishing has been great. Stuck these two 3lbers within 15 minutes of arriving at the pond yesterday evening and went on to catch 8 more between 1-2lbs all on the shallow crank. 1 Quote
Fried Lemons Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 Had a great time wading the potomac. I hit up a hole that produced for me in the past and it was red hot. I caught this 17.5" fish which I am positive is the same one I released a few weeks ago. Two casts later I topped it with this 19" beast. All in all I must have pulled 10 fish out of that hole and lost one that was either a big smallie or a catfish. Also pulled this out of the canal on the walk back to the car. 3 Quote
Aisu Posted August 14, 2016 Posted August 14, 2016 where at exactly Friend Lemons? if you dont mind sharing, ive been trying to find a place to fish around the williamsport area. I live in waynesboro, PA. So its about 50 min drive or so for me, ive been going to the area around slackwater boat ramp, just down from it. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted August 15, 2016 Super User Posted August 15, 2016 Just my normal heads up... My club is doing a tourney at Black Hills this Saturday, will be 20 boats, so first thing in the morning and 3pm will be rather busy at the ramp. Quote
shsabres Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Can anybody recommend any fishing spots near Waldorf, MD? I have fished Gilbert Run and a couple local ponds (Most of the local ponds are COVERED in Algae). I need to fish from shore for the moment. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted August 17, 2016 Super User Posted August 17, 2016 I am going to hit Cash Lake tomorrow in my kayak. I bank fish there all the time but this will be my first boat trip. For those who haven't been, it is a small, shallow lake. It has a medium dock, maybe 200' of riprap, an old creek channel full of rocks, and a lot of grassy/weed shoreline and a huge area of pads. My tackle plan is as follows: 1) MHF Casting rod - Spooled with 8lb YZHybrid, I am thinking chatterbait and/or swim jig, but likely a chatterbait all day. 2) MHF Casting rod - Spooled with 50lb braid, so I am thinking a T-rig worm for the channel and a Vilecraw/Rage Menace for the weeds. Depending on how far in the pads I want to get, I can swap out to a frog or weightless VCraw. 3) MXF Spinning rod - Spooled with 20lb braid/8kb YZH leader. This is going to be weighless senkos/flukes to work through the grass and the edges of the pads. 4)MLF Spinning rod - Spooled with 10lb braid/8lb YZH leader. This is usualy my Ned/MWF rod, but I am also going to bring along some mico-shaky head lures I have been working with. Any critiques, criticisms, or ideas welcome. I have had rotten luck with LMBs this summer so I am starting out with everything that has worked even a little so far. Id throw a frog around the pads on the right sight of the peir and the left. Theres a cable and or rocks underwater near the floating peir so be careful lost lots of lures down there lol i ve had decent luck on trigged black/chartreuse ribbon tails trigged. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted August 17, 2016 Super User Posted August 17, 2016 I tend to use flukes or weightless Vile Craws as topwater when bank fishing, I own a few frogs but never really throw them unless I am facing a total duckweed cover. I am going to bring a few topwater lures along but I have never really had much luck with them and likely will not bust them out unless it gets really tough. The only summer fish I have gotten so far have been from the channel slow rolling a chatterbait and twitching a senko/fluke along the edges of the pads and through the grass. I have pitched, skipped, and thrown everything under the sun at that dock and never even had a hit. There is an older guy I see there a lot who seems to have success pitching a tiny little stick worm at the pads by the dock but he has far better aim then I do. Quote

Super User fishwizzard Posted August 18, 2016 Super User Posted August 18, 2016 Yep, that is the guy. I never see him doing anything but pitching that worm to those same two chunks of pads. I also almost always notice him catching, while I am ripping flukes out of the weeds and cussing. I hope I get smarter when I get older. 1 Quote
Fried Lemons Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 The river continues to produce. Caught numerous fish in the 8-12" range with this being one of the better ones. As I was bringing him in I saw another fish following closely. I caught him on the next cast. Canal has been very slow but I managed this long skinny fish slowly dragging a jig. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted August 20, 2016 Super User Posted August 20, 2016 Anyone know a source for bathymetric maps of the various freshwater MD lakes and ponds? I have found them for the larger reseviors but nothing else. I am fine with buying them if they are available but without a FF/Sonar I don't think I could read a map chip on my PC. I am itching to hit some more places with my kayak but I could use a leg up. Quote
RixTracker Posted August 22, 2016 Posted August 22, 2016 Hey all just moved to Dunkirk and bought the first bass boat I ever had a 1986 tracker 1710 with a merc 150. I am from Michigan and have no clue where to go fishing around here. Any help would be awesome and I wouldn't mind following someone out sometime to get to know the area. Thanks all Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted August 23, 2016 Super User Posted August 23, 2016 I'm about 30m north of you, and all I can say is "learn to love perch and stripped bass" In all seriousness, I don't there there is much in the way of freshwater bass in the corridor between the Pax and the bay. However, right across the Pax from you is the Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary, which has a few small ponds, and Cedarville State Forest has a small pond that has just enough bass in it to keep me coming back. There are some other spots scattered around the area, but sadly nothing huge or super exciting. But, you do live right in the middle of some great brackish/saltwater fishing. Right now the white perch season is in full swing and come late Sept/early Oct, the stripped bass will come up into the tidal rivers and even a kayak will get you plenty of action. Quote

Thanks all There is a largemouth population in the tidal Patuxent from Dunkirk north as far as you can go....It's not an excellent bass fishery but they are in there and DNR is stocking yearly. You're probably an hour or less to Smallwood State Park to fish the tidal Potomac (on Mattawoman Creek). You can drop the trolling motor right at the ramp and start catching bass. Mattawoman Creek is a good place to start, plenty of bass and big enough to explore for a while without needing to hit the main river unless you want to. There are several other ramps on the MD side of the river that shouldn't be too far. This might help a little... http://fishonbassclub.com/content/ramp-details ...Many of these should be 2 hours or less from you. 1 Quote

Really? I have found tiny smallies in the Little Pax but never caught anything but perch in the big Pax. I had no idea they were stocking. Quote

It's not enough for me to drive to given the other options that would be closer and better...I'd have to drive past like 5 ramps on the Potomac to get there so it doesn't make whole lot of sense for me, but if it was near home I'd fish it for sure . DNR has some articles/info on their site about the stocking...Spawning habitat is limited so they are essentially propping it up with semi-regular stockings. They do the same thing on the Choptank and probably other rivers. DNR is pretty quiet on their stockings for some reason. They've made significant stockings on the Potomac and Deep Creek in the past few years too but I never heard anything about them...I read about it in their annual reports. 1 Quote

Besides that head down to Smallwood State Park there are some spots at the park and also some other roads that have a public area you can fish from. I think there is a park in St Marys County with a lake/pond but I dont know how the fishing is... You could also drive 30 min up the road to Bowie, tons of spots there. 1 Quote

shsabres Posted August 25, 2016 Posted August 25, 2016 @JeepFisher: I tried the spot you were talking about...don't waste your time...I didn't get so much as a bite on multiple different styles to include Senko, Ned rig, top water, frog..NOTHING. The water SMELLS terrible. Every cast brought up nothing but sludge. It was disgusting. Another example of how people are ruining our waterways because it was nothing but litter!! Quote
