What did you catch them on??

Spoon, inline spinners, worms, powerbait...all works...

Got out a bit yesterday before the foul weather hit. Fished from dam #5 down to around Gift rd. before I gave up. Water was 44 degrees. I got skunked. Saw 2 other boats heading up towards the dam. Was nice to finally be back out and test my boat setup for fishing instead of waterfowl hunting. I probably did more farting around than actually fishing though. Anxious for the temps to get back up!!!

Well, though it's probably too cold for anything to want to bite today, I went along about a half mile of the Little Patuxent with in line spinners, all different colors, too, and got no bites, I was fishing for about 2 hours.

Get a water temperature gauge, and they are active if water temperature is above 40. You should probably wait until this Thursday or Friday before going out again, and try different lures such as spoon, rooster, powerbait, salmon eggs. If you are not getting any bite in inline spinner, then change it up and try something else.

Are you trying to catch bass or trout? I have not fished there so if you can describe the water maybe myself or someone else can suggest an approach? Fishing this time of year can be frustrating so don't give up after two hours.

I do, but technically its for another thread. I fish a small series on a lake in south central PA.

There used to be a big bass format tournament at Black Hills but its been a few years since I've heard anything about that and a couple more years since I've fished it.

Went out last Saturday, just to enjoy some time outside and wet a line. Fished at Indian Springs pond and waded in at Devils Backbone. Tried spinners, plastic 3" shad color & various fly patterns, got 2 bites. One on spinner & the other on the plastic. Not much of a day but it was great being outside! Anyone wanna go fishin?

Went out last evening on the hunt for some walleye but came up empty handed. Managed to land my new personal best potomac river smallmouth. He weighd in at 3-1/2 pounds on the boga grip and a tad over 19 inches. I dropped a grub in behind a log along the bank in a slack pool and felling the thump I thought walleye. I can only imagine the look on my face when I seen the smallie.

Welcome to THE boards Webbster!

Thanks Basser. I'm still a newbie at fishing. I search the web for info and then just hit a local spot and try to put the info to use. It's all trial and error at this point and some days it feels like it's all errors. Try to get some fishing in at least once a week. So if anyone has tips or possible locations they would like to pass on I'm open to most anything. My local places at this time (in order of # of visits)

1. Greenbrier

2. Devils backbone

3. Blair Valley

4. Indian Springs

Haven't really tried the Potomac yet I've always thought it was a more advanced level of fishing.

Thanks for listening to my ramblings.

Welcome Webbster, I see you are from Boonsboro that is where I grew up. I currently live in Germantown.

Been awhile since I fished the spots you list, I would take a look at Big Pool (in Fort Frederick State Park) and Cunningham Falls. Both can offer some good fishing.

This time of year is tough on everyone, in a couple weeks once water gets 55-60 degrees things will get a lot better.

Don't let the potomac scare you, the upper potomac has some great smallmouth fishing.  I am far from an advanced fisherman and I formally don't have many problems on the potomac. Sure, they can be down days, but not to many.  I don't know if you have a boat or bank fish.

I fish the potomac from Harpers Ferry, to south of Mouth of Monocacy via Jon boat, kayak, wading.  Let me know which options you have to fish and I'll expand on where to go.

As for lures/bait  I'll give up what works for me.  Texas rigged 4" zoom lizards or baby brush hogs. Last year I tried a bunch of Texas rigged plastic craws, and those were pretty good too.  I tried some Zoom super flukes too, but they worked a lot better up in Harpers Ferry, than they did lower down the river.  Crankbaits are pretty good. And anything topwater.

That's what works for me. I have not tried the lower potomac for largemouth yet, but form the pics posted around here, it's extremely awesome fishing

Hit the potomac near 4 locks with Allen (munkin) today , not a lot of action but I did manage 2 nice smallies ..this was the bigger one... Just shy of 3lbs

Bill thanks for the information. I have an inflatable Sevylor kayak, 14' Jon boat and a set of waders and boots. I also enjoy fishing from the bank. I purchased a book by Steve Moore "wade and shoreline fishing the Potomac river for smallmouth bass". I am studying that and have a few places picked out that I to try. I have almost finished my outrigger system for the Jon boat and should be ready for a trial run by this Friday. I am looking forward to your recommendations for the Potomac.

Happy Fishing

Did some late night walley fishing fir and sat. Walleyes are spawned out and males are milking. Friday night landed two walley both over the slot. First one was 6lb and then other slightly smaller. Hooked up and successfully landed a 42 inch musky while while fishing. Set the hook on 3 other fish that night but they all 3 straightened out the hook. Saturday night I didn't have any luck but my good friend and his dad brought a couple nice ones in. I'm done with walleyes for the year time for bassin. Here is the pic of my buds dad with two of his walleye from sat day and night.
