Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted March 11, 2013 Super User Posted March 11, 2013 Went out Sunday morning for about 2 hours with approximately 0 bites. Wouldn have stayed longer but I had to get home and get some sleep since I had to work at 5. Went out a few times recently in the mornings with no luck. Gonna go out Thursday around noonish and try my luck. Hoping that the sun being higher in the sky will make a difference. They gotta start biting sooner or later. 1 Quote
KenLattimore Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 I had a chance to go to BH today to wet a line. Went out from 3-5pm and managed to catch two, about 14 and 16" respectively. Not sure of the water temp but estimate in the low 40s. Dragged a worm painfully slow on the bottom. Excited to have done well given the time of year and reports from others. Good luck out there the prespawn is around the corner!!! 1 Quote
Dramer77 Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 i couldnt get any good bites, caught a fall fish on a lipless strike king sexy shad... next day took the wife out and couldnt get anything on artificial baits, the wife was using nightcrawlers knocking down fall fish one after another... i used her rod for alittle and caught close to a dozen fall fish in around 30 mins...lol 1 Quote
nastynate Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 The potomac was on fire yesterday evening. Landed 13 smallmouth and 1 largemouth 4:30 to dark. Worked a jerk bait right up the shore line. No hogs but its always fun when the bite is on. 1 Quote
nastynate Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 Tonight was a different story. Only landed 3. River came up a foot and temp was at 50 degrees according to R C Wilison water treatment plant of Williamsport. Windy and a couple snow storms blew threw. Still hitting the jerk bait tight to the bank working it up stream. Fish size was better tonight had 3 other fish take a swipe at the x rap and they were toads. 1 Quote
basser89 Posted March 14, 2013 Author Posted March 14, 2013 Well shoot! I was thinking about hitting the river this morning until I checked the levels. I opted for Black Hills instead. The water was stained at best. LOL! I managed one 15 incher on a white Chatterbait. Surprisingly, that bass hit close to the shoreline in about 2-3'. Unfortunately, the clouds rolled in and didn't have another bite. Quote
nastynate Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 I notice the clouds played a big difference in the bite the past 2 days as well. When the sun would go in the bite stopped. Almost like a light switch went off and soon as the sun popped back out bam there was a fish. Tuesday night when the river was on the rise the word out was walleye every where. i herd there were 14 people lined up on the hot wall. My fishing budy was up d**n 5 and said someone caught 11lb walleye. Thats close to state record. I never have fished black hills before. Lots of talk about the lake on here. I'm gonna have to put it on my hit list for this year. What's the average size fish out of there? Quote

I've noticed that in the past on many outings as well. The only time that sticks out that doesn't follow suit is back in March of 2009. Landed my PB that day on a lunchtime outing at Black Hills. Being limited to shore fishing, I'd say my average size is in the 14" range. I do manage some better bass throughout the season though. My PB, that I mentioned above, was 6-9 and I have seen bigger but haven't landed or hooked up with those. Last year my best came in September was 5 even and I do catch them in the 3-4lb range from time to time. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted March 14, 2013 Super User Posted March 14, 2013 Just want to go on record to say that the MD Compass thing you have to sign in to get your license SUCKS. Tried three different times to get a license so I could be legal, three different times go to the end and it gave me a message that they were experiencing computer problems. I just went fishing. LOL Quote

LOL I can't agree more, and the result you received is an on going problem; next year I'm going back to the Sports Store or a DNR office for mine. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted March 14, 2013 Super User Posted March 14, 2013 I was kind of hoping that a chance encounter with a DNR officer wasn't going to happen but that if it did, I could persuade him/her to give me a pass if they too knew the system was garbage. LOL I had fun fishing and didnt meet any officers, all good. Next time I'll just stop at Dick's on the way down. Quote
Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted March 15, 2013 Super User Posted March 15, 2013 Spinnerbait bite was on over here on the Eastern Shore today. Caught 3 in about an hour around 6:00 at Tuckahoe Lake. One was decent. They were my first fish ever on spinnerbaits. Nice way to start my season. 1 Quote

basser89 Posted March 15, 2013 Author Posted March 15, 2013 Local fishing touney... http://www.thefrcc.org/2nd_annual_bass_fishing_tournament That's just about right around the corner from me! LOL! Its a shame I won't be able to do it! Had to get away from the pc/job hunt for a while this afternoon so popped over to Baker park to fish the pond. Water color there was good, hardly any stain to it at all. Took a few rods to figure out what they wanted. Turns out, they were on a lipless crank bite. Managed 3, the best going about 2 1/2 pounds. I was getting ready to leave and made that all famous "one more cast" and hooked into a HOG! Turned out, that hog was about a 10 pound crap. Hooked it right outside the mouth. LOL! Fun way to end the outing. Quote
Dramer77 Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 nice... i may go to the april and may heat for that event 1 Quote

FisherHuntress Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 I live in Frederick and I'm pretty new to fishing. I'm glad I found these forums What are some good fish to learn with? Quote
Bill Poch Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Basser I live right near you, we should meet up at Baker park sometime. I only managed 1 out of there last year. I need to learn from the pro. Quote

Welcome to THE boards FisherHuntress! What are some good fish to learn with? Depends who you ask. Me personally, I primarily fish for bass. Doesn't mean there's anything wrong with fishing for bluegill, walleye, catfish or whatever else. Bass are just want I enjoy fishing for the most. Basser I live right near you, we should meet up at Baker park sometime. I only managed 1 out of there last year. I need to learn from the pro. Hey Bill, I know we talked a bit last fall so we'll have to see if we can set something up. Baker park definitely works for me. It's close so don't have to worry about spending $90 in gas. LOL! I was out checking out some places to work around Frederick and wound up over by the wal mart over on 26 and noticed there's a decent sized body of water between wal mart and the monocacy (there are soccer fields there as well). Not sure if it's an actual pond or a rain collection area or what. Has anyone around Frederick ever attempted to fish there? Curious if there's actually fish in it. Quote

Not sure if it's an actual pond or a rain collection area or what. Has anyone around Frederick ever attempted to fish there? Curious if there's actually fish in it. I saw that too and I was curious about it also. I think I saw drainage there and my guess is it leads out to the Monocacy. So I'm sure there are some fish that have swum through there, I'm just not entirely sure. Quote
Bill Poch Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 I've never seen that body of water by Walmart. I don't know how I missed it, I've taken my kayak on the Monocacy up there a few times last year. FisherHuntress - there are some ponds around Frederick, Baker Park, Middletown park. There is a nice sized one right by Whittier Elementary school which is off Rosemont. I'm sure all these ponds hold bluegill which should be easy to catch with some worms and a bobber (but we all know fishing is never that easy). I think most of the people here fish for Bass, and those should be in all the above mentioned ponds. The Monocacy river is good for smallmouth bass and it's very easy to wade around in the river if that's your thing. Pinecliff park is a place I go to a lot, but it was horrible fishing there last year for some reason, the year before I was crushing them there. As a beginner the best thing I could recommend to use there are rebel crawfish crankbaits, you'll catch bluegill on those too, but I'm no pro so take my word with a grain of salt. If you want to be adventurous the Potomac river is an awesome place for smallmouth. Easy wading if the Point of Rocks river level is under 1.7, I prefer it to be closer to 1.5. You can park on the VA side of the river just over the bridge and wade out from the boat ramp. Don't wade out on the MD side, it's deeper and more dangerous. Another go to spot around this area is Black Hill Regional park in Boyds, people have a ton of luck catching some nice bass there. Basser - I know you fish Middletown but have you ever seen that small pond near the highs on the left on the way up there? I drive past it twice a week picking my kid up from day care and keep telling myself I need to check it out, never see anybody fishing it, and it looks to be on public land. At least I can assume it's public until somebody chases me away from it with a shotgun. Also, once it warms up if you want I can take you to my secret creek over by spring ridge, it was very good to me and my brothers last year. Easy wading too. You gave me some very good help/info last year and I don't mind sharing my "honey hole" with you. There are some LMB in there as well. I've only seen a handfull of people back there in the 2 years I've fished it, and they were fishing in the wrong spots. Quote
Bill Poch Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 A different topic, has anybody fished the Potomac at Lander? My bro's and I have a 14' Jon boat and I was thinking about hitting that place. I don't know how the current is, and right now we are stuck with a 36lb trolling motor until our 9.8 outboard is fixed. We were debating hitting d**n 4 this weekend depending on how cold it's going to be in the morning, but Lander would be closer. I'm just not familiar with Lander. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted March 19, 2013 Super User Posted March 19, 2013 Welcome FisherHuntress, I used to live in Frederick now down in Germantown. There is a pond just off 270 and the 80 exit. Been there once is got a couple nice fish. Plan on heading there a few more times this year. When I get home from work I will send you more details on how to get there. Quote
