Super User BrianinMD Posted April 4, 2012 Super User Posted April 4, 2012 Got out to Black Hills the last two evenings. Monday night, met up with Ken and 301. Fishing was slow, both in number of bites and the presentation it took to get them. Caught a couple, nothing big. But another guy there caught a beautiful 7 to 7.5 pound largemouth. When I first got there the wind was still blowing, all my bites came while it was blowing. When it stopped I couldn't find anything. But always fun to get out, especially when you meet up with two new guys. Look forward to the oppurtunity to fish with them some more. Last night, met up with Sean (basser89). Managed to find a few bites, again the presentation was slow. In fact extremely slow, most bites I never felt just saw the line twitch. When I set the hook immediately I would most or hook up for a second then off. Switch to not setting the hook on the line twitch and let the fish swim for a couple seconds and managed to land a couple. Did manage one decent fish about 4 to 4.5 pounds. Sean found some bites too, even after a kayaker decided the only place to fish on the 500 acre lake was right were he was. Not sure when I will get out again, hopefully it won't be to long and I can meet up with guys again. Quote
basser89 Posted April 4, 2012 Author Posted April 4, 2012 Great post Kevin I! Losing those big ones is painful for sure! One thing I do when throwing spinnerbaits is add a trailer hook about 99% of the time. Typically, the only time I don't use a trailer hook is when I'm fishing extremely heavy cover (yes, even thicker than the stick ups)! Good to see you getting out too Bill! Good luck with the yak this weekend! It was good getting out for a little while last evening with Brian. Always a good time! I did manage to get a water temp last night, my little pool thermometer read 55 so it appears that temps are warming up slightly again! I watched Brian pull in several of his smaller bass he caught last evening (I missed seeing him catch his big one). I did see a pic of it so I do actually believe he caught it. LOL! As Brian mentioned I had a kayaker decide to fish right in front of me fishing the same water as I was covering which really gets my agent orange flared up! Poetic justice was watching the goofball get his crankbait stuck and pretty much ruined the area I was trying to fish. I moved around to another spot and had something cut me off. Not sure if it was a musky or a snapper. Didn't act like a musky so I'm leaning towards a snapper (was working a fluke style bait on a drop shot at the time). I did manage one little scrapper on a t-rigged lizard. He went about 14-15 inches. Like Brian, not sure when I'll be getting out again myself. Keep up the great reports everyone! Quote
Fat Boy Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 I'm not going to go into details other than my buddies did about the same as I did over the weekend while fishing with them on the Upper Tidal Potomac. We fished several locations, and the main theme was if you find the grass you'll find the bass. Lipless cranks worked best, but on woody cover when we did fish it we found some decent bass too. Chatterbaits and plastic worms were the ticket at those spots. I caught 37 largemouth in 20 hours of fishing and not one was less than 15" and the biggest went 19". One of my buddies landed a 21.5" bass on a plastic worm. We also spent a fair amount of time looking for stripers and managed to catch some schoolies. I landed 19 stripers over the weekend. While fishing the plastic worms, we also landed some other bonus species like long yellow perch and a few slab crappie. After a weekend of catching good numbers of decent size bass, the result is "bass thumb". I blogged jokingly about it, and you can get the link to my blog from my profile. Hope you like that post too. Here are some pics, I have more but I'm only going to share some of my favorites...enjoy: My buddy Steve with an approx 6 lb. largemouth Here's a fatty...and a decent size bass too Typical striper for the weekend, they went 20-25"...we did see a larger one roll on the surface, but nobody hooked any of that class: My buddy Howard with a nice bass: Me again, this one on a plastic worm: Most of them on the second day were on chatterbaits: Quote
Fat Boy Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 Day's one and three, lipless cranks were the ticket for both species: Steve with a big blue cat caught on a lipless crank 3 Quote
TheKingFisher Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 @Kevin W. Wow, what a great post and great time out on the water! I want some bass thumb! I checked out the blog also and there's some good stuff there. I've bookmarked it. Thanks Quote
JigMe Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 Anyone catching anything around Baltimore, and Howard county? Quote

When I was younger, if someone would have told me that I enjoyed writing, I'da laughed my butt off. I have no idea what changed in me. LOL Quote
Super User Munkin Posted April 6, 2012 Super User Posted April 6, 2012 Looks like Saturday I will be hitting up Black Hills or Big Slackwater not sure which yet. Allen Quote
basser89 Posted April 6, 2012 Author Posted April 6, 2012 Good luck Allen! I pic up my daughter for the weekend tomorrow so the only chance I have to get out is probably tomorrow morning if I leave early and go before its time to pick her up. IF I do make it out, I was thinkin about hitting dam 4 for a little while to see if I could get a few smallies. I did make it out at lunch today. Lost a good one on a spinnerbait. Quote
TheKingFisher Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 I went out to BH today around 7am and stayed until about noon over by the stickups. Caught 6 consisting of 3 dinks and 3 a bit bigger but all less than 15 inches I would say. Caught the first on a spinnerbait, second ever and the rest on what had become my trusty one knocker lipless crank. I say had because sadly it didn't make the trip home. After several saves from getting stuck in cover, I finally wasn't able to recover it. After I lost it nothing else produced any bites for me. I hadn't been fishing too long this morning when Ken showed up and I fished with him the rest of my time out and he was planning to stay longer. Don't know how he made out. It was a decent day out. Still looking to land a monster. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted April 8, 2012 Super User Posted April 8, 2012 Big Slackwater was a windfest but when it wasn't blowing 50mph I did manage to catch some fish. Big fish was 19" SM I caught on a prototype fluke that went about 4lbs. Allen Quote
Super User Munkin Posted April 9, 2012 Super User Posted April 9, 2012 Nice smallie Allen! Weird year so far? Fish are larger than usual and not in their traditional holes. Allen Quote
basser89 Posted April 9, 2012 Author Posted April 9, 2012 Nice smallie Allen! I didn't make it out to dam 4 as I hoped but to my surprise, my daughter wanted to go fishing. I decided to take her to Beaver pond behind Big Pool. The wind, as with most places, was crazy and couldn't really get her on anything there. I saw some interesting spots but we weren't really set up for that, wasn't expecting to see so many lily pads. From the spots we hit, everything seemed really shallow. Can anyone clue me in on where the deeper water is there? Quote
MikeVictor Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Good day, I'd like to do some wade and possibly kayak fishing for SMB on the Monocacy River north of Thermont to the PA boarder. Can anyone suggest places I can access the river in that area. I am familiar with the Legore Bridge access point, but have not been on the river north of there. A couple times a month, I will be traveling from Hanover, MD to a location near Ski Liberty, PA and on the way up Friday after work, I'd like to stop off on the Monocacy in it's northern most stretch to fish for SMB, wading mostly. Can anyone offer any advice. I also may drive back to it to fish some over such weekends and thus my interest in the northern most stretch of the river in MD. I do not have a PA license, am only interesed in MD at this time.. Mike Quote

Here's the link: http://dnr.maryland.gov/boating/frederick.asp From what I can tell, there is a boat ramp near Thurmont off of 550 (the link shows it). The other spot to consider is Cunningham Falls. There is shoreline access and there are bass in there. They do stock it with trout so you will need a trout stamp to fish there). Hope this helps and let us know how you do! Quote
Fat Boy Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 Mike, what I used to do was to use an ADC County Map, pick out bridge crossings and check them out. If there was parking and the area wasn't posted, or there was some sort of access, we'd give it a try. Of course, it also assumes that it's a wadable stretch of water too. If the fishing was good, we'd return, otherwise, we'd try other spots. Fishing Report 4/9/12 My buddy Howard and I went out yesterday in his crawdad. They were calling for 25-30 mph winds, so of course, our bad luck with the weather continued. But we are determined to get our fishing time in. We picked a tidal creek of the Potomac that most likely would provide us some protection from the winds. Fortunately, we were able to hang along a shoreline that protected us from the wind for the most part. I did OK considering that we fished maybe a 1/2 mile of shoreline at the most. I finished with 11 largemouth with the biggest at 18", only two were short fish. Rat-L-Traps caught the most fish, followed by T-rigged plastic worms. The worms may have produced a bit better had the wind let you fish them without blowing your line all over or the boat. It was fun and better than work though. Pics: Spunky... Fat and Spunky... Howard caught this one as a nuclear explosion went off (kidding...my phone camera takes pics like this sometimes and I have no clue why)... I caught this one on the way back to the ramp with zero fishing time left, last desperate cast kind of thing: I lost a big bass that wrapped up in the cover while my buddy was changing batteries with the anchor down. I gave the fish slack but it wouldn't free the line. I felt it pulling, it would come up and jump, boil on the surface, and there was nothing that I could do until the boat became mobile again. I was helpless, and so was the bass. After the boat was under power again, we motored up and the bass boiled again, and was gone, leaving my lure snagged below in the cover. I tried to free it and it broke off. I lost both the fish and my favorite Rat-L-Trap. I cried. You can't replace those fish catching cranks with the paint all beaten off, and scarred by hook rash and teeth marks. Luckily, after that, I pulled out a new one brand spankin' new out of the box, changed out the hooks, and caught three more. I guess I have a new favorite trap now and I'll use it until all of the paint is gone on it! Quote
basser89 Posted April 11, 2012 Author Posted April 11, 2012 Always enjoy reading your reports Kevin! Thanks! I might try for a lunch time outing tomorrow or friday. Not sure yet where I want to go. Quote
TheKingFisher Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 Latest reports... This past Sunday - Went out early around 7 or so to BH and fished until about 11:00 and got skunked! I also lost a lot of hardware to the cover in the stick ups. Met up with Ken who also had it rough. I'm not sure how he faired after I left? Went back out to the stickups yesterday with my son around 4PM for probably an hour and a half. It was windy and lightly raining when we decided to pack it in. Caught a dink on a t-rigged lizard and a slender 14 incher on a lipless crank. Yawn! Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted April 12, 2012 Super User Posted April 12, 2012 I am sure this weather is got everything confused, the next few days are warmer so the bite should pick up again. If all goes well will hit BH with one of my club guys this weekend. Quote

Super User BrianinMD Posted April 13, 2012 Super User Posted April 13, 2012 They do work, at least from a boat, never tried one from shore. The difficult part would be to get a good angle, they are most effective in my experience from directly about where you are hung. Plans are to meet up with hellbenderman at BH tomorrow, not sure exactly what area we will be going. Its his boat so he is the boss. Quote
