basser89 Posted March 29, 2012 Author Posted March 29, 2012 Welcome to THE boards Top Sarge! I know this thread is a long one, but if you look through the pages, I'm sure you'll find some anglers that may be close to you! Thanks for the heads up Brian! Allen, I'm out of town this weekend so I won't be able to join. Hopefully some others will be able to meet up! Quote
Bill Poch Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 I noticed when I was at Black Hills yesterday they had a sign stating they are expecting a large crowd on Sunday and may have to close the park if/once the parking fills up. Just a heads up for anybody thinking about going Sunday. 1 Quote
basser89 Posted March 30, 2012 Author Posted March 30, 2012 I noticed when I was at Black Hills yesterday they had a sign stating they are expecting a large crowd on Sunday and may have to close the park if/once the parking fills up. Just a heads up for anybody thinking about going Sunday. If memory serves me correct, they close the park for that day because it is THAT packed, even the boat ramp parking area. I did get to sneak out for a little while after work last evening. I had 1 dink on and didn't even land it. It hit a Strike King soft stick bait. I don't think I even had it hooked, I believe it just had the bait wedged in its mouth and when it jumped the bait came out. LOL! But the whole reason for mentioning my outing was that I finally remembered to bring a thermometer with me. I about fell over when I read the temp, it was down to 54 degrees last evening. I figured that cold snap would have dropped the water temps but didn't expect it to have dropped that far. The last time I had checked it, it was up at 59 then and that was before that warm stretch we had before the cold front moved in. It was good to see the water clearing up back at the stick ups as well. Seemed like it had stayed stained for several weeks! Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted March 30, 2012 Super User Posted March 30, 2012 Wow, big drop in temps. That will make it interesting. I was thinking of going sunday but no luck finding a boater to go with and with all of these people at the park I will avoid it. Wife is out of town Sunday so will end up going somewhere just don't know where yet. Sent a message to 301, hopefully we can meet up Monday after work at BH. With those temps and the drop may be fishing a lot of plastics close to cover. Quote
TheKingFisher Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 Maybe I missed where someone said, but what's the event at BH Sunday that will force them to close the park? Thanks in advance. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted March 30, 2012 Super User Posted March 30, 2012 Some type of conservatory, plants/flowers type show. Quote
Pescado Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 Hi All, A friend pointed me here (TheKingFisher), thought I'd say Hi. I live in DC, work in Rockville, and do most of my fishing in MD, from shore and in kayak. It's good to have a forum with locals, hope to contribute something to help someone else. 1 Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted March 30, 2012 Super User Posted March 30, 2012 Welcome Pescado, its a great place to meet up and talk about fishing the area. Quote

Welcome Pescado, way to jump right in! This is an excellent forum with great participants and a few weeks ago it dawned on me having joined awhile ago but only recently becoming active, that I'd already encountered several members out at the fishing holes. Super User Munkin Posted March 31, 2012 Super User Posted March 31, 2012 Well I am going out somewhere on Sunday, I guess Black Hills is out. Upper Potomac, Cunnigham Falls, maybe Greenbrier are some options I just will have to see if they stocked trout in any of those. Trout stockings turn these places into a zoo and i do not feel like fighting with any trout fisherman that do not understand that a boat ramp is not a fishing pier. Allen Quote
basser89 Posted March 31, 2012 Author Posted March 31, 2012 Hey Allen have you been to Big Pool yet? How's the fishing been there? Quote

Super User Munkin Posted March 31, 2012 Super User Posted March 31, 2012 Well they stocked trout in Beaver Creek at least which means Greenbrier and Cunnigham Falls are out. Allen Quote
KenLattimore Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 When to Black Hills today at 3:30 and donated a few spinnerbaits today to the stick ups. Finally resorted to a senko and got two small ones about 10 an 13 inches as the sun was going down. Quote
Traveler2586 Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 From WTOP.com "Win prizes for catching snakeheads WASHINGTON - If the delicious meat and dangerous souvenirs weren't enough incentive to catch snakehead fish, how about up to $200 in prizes? The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is offering prizes to anglers who can land the destructive, invasive species that has many experts worried. This follows a two-day tournament the DNR hosted last September aimed at stopping the species from expanding beyond its already surprising reach. "We do not want snakeheads in our waters," said DNR Inland Fisheries Director Don Cosden. "This initiative is a way to remind anglers that it is important to catch and remove this invasive species of fish." Here are the prizes being offered: $200 gift card from Bass Pro Shops A Maryland State Passport which provides unlimited day-use entry for up to 10 passengers in a vehicle, unlimited boat launching at State Park facilities and a 10 percent discount on state-operated concessions and boat rentals Potomac River Fisheries Commission fishing license Winners must have caught the fish from the Chesapeake Bay's watershed." There's more in the article but I didn't want to make the post too big. go to WTOP at http://www.wtop.com/?nid=46&sid=2808491 1 Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted April 2, 2012 Super User Posted April 2, 2012 Anyone going to Black Hills tonight? I was planning to meet 301-fisherman there at the stickups, I haven't heard from him so not sure if he going to be able to make it. But thinking I will still go, and hope the wind isn't to bad. I am sure the temp drop has slowed things dramatically but we will see. Quote

I'm coming straight from work so if it's not dry enough I'll probably pass. I went out Saturday and didn't catch anything until I resorted to a Senko right before the sun was down. I'll send 301 a text and let him know to check the boards to let you know if he's going to make it out today. Quote
TheKingFisher Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 Hey guys, here's my latest fishing updates. I hope it's coherent. I got out this past Saturday morning at about 9 and went to Black Hills over by the stick ups and the tally for the day was 6 hooked, 4 landed and all on a 5/8 oz One Knocker lipless crank. The first two hookups were the ones I lost and were easily the biggest and looked like they were going to be pretty good size. But I forgot to set my drag on one and the other threw the hook just when I got him close but I probably had a bit too much slack on the line. I lost a couple of spinnerbaits Saturday to what I think was cheap line (beware of the Vicious brand of line at Walmart). It was supposed to be 15# test line, but somehow the shock of a 3/8 oz spinnerbait was blowing the line out on cast sending the lures sailing overhead and into the water. 5 of the fish were bass but I also caught my first crappie ever on the same lure! It looked like he'd had his mouth sewn shut as he had two separate hooks from one treble in each lip. I looked at it and said how am I going to get this out? I eventually did and got it back in the water and it swam away. The bite was picking up during my last hour there but I finally had to scoot around noon. A little later in the day I met up with Ken and his buddy at BH and I also met Dave "301" from the forum here. It was just a social visit for me though no fishing since I'd gone earlier and couldn't stay. Today I went back out to Black Hills from about 10:30 - 12:30 again by the stick ups. I stopped by Dicks first and picked up a few more spinnerbaits and went back to give spinnerbaits another try. I was armed with braided line today hoping to keep them on the line. I still had the lipless crank from before tied on so I threw that for about 30 minutes and hooked into what was going to surely be my personal best. I'd never felt this heavy a mush after it hit the line. I got it as close as 20 feet and it flashed itself and went back down and threw the hook. Soon as it got off I realized I never actually set the hook. Big downer! I eventually got caught on a log and ended up breaking one of the hooks on the rear treble so I took it off and tied on one of my new spinnerbaits. I'd only taken one rod down to the water with me today which forced me to stick with fishing the spinnerbait which turned out to be a really good thing. Outside of fishing wacky, I don't think I've ever spent as much time as I did today working with one specific lure. I fished that thing all over the place and was really having a good time watching it and feeling it come through the cover in the water. I had already decided I was having a blast and then I actually hooked into one, fish on! It wasn't big probably a few inches over a foot, but what a reward for my dedication and patience fishing the spinnerbait! Of course it wouldn't be a complete fishing day had I not paid necessary tribute to the fishing gods, so my new spinnerbait eventually got hooked into something and I wasn't able to get it back, but at least I wasn't launching them like cannonballs never to be seen again. I feel like I learned a lot today and may have even leveled up a bit! Quote
Traveler2586 Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 @ The KingFisher, Check the point of your hooks; lightly drag the the point across your thumb nail, a sharp hook will grab (bite in) your nail a bit. If you don't have one yet, get yourself a diamond coated hook sharpener and use it frequently. I like the sharpener that has a pocket clip cap so I can carry it in my shirt pocket. 1 Quote
Super User Munkin Posted April 4, 2012 Super User Posted April 4, 2012 Sounds like you need to stock up on some spinnerbaits! Allen 1 Quote
Fat Boy Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 Kevin I, nice report! Sounds like that crankbait is a hot lure. Change out the treble hooks and put premium ones on it (like Gamakatsus or something comparable). 1 Quote
Bill Poch Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 I decided to go for some smallmouths on the Monocacy tonight at Pinecliff park. I don't have any waders so I was stuck to shore fishing. I fished the heck out of this spot last year and most of the places holding fish are not accessible by shore. I tried my crawfish crankbaits and 2-3" power grubs with no luck. Those are my go to baits on the rivers for smallies. When the sun was starting to set I saw a fish in the middle of the river hit the top, so I threw on my little rebel popper even though it's not easy to work in a running river from shore. I would let it drift down river and slowly pop it up the shoreline. I was completely shocked when I got a hit and fought him for a few seconds until he decided to jump and spit the thing out. Although no fish were landed it was a great night to be out and I love fishing that river. I think I'm going to get the new kayak in the water this Sat for a test run if we don't get any rain and the river stays about the same. I'm dying to get the yak in the water just to play around with it. I've never owned one. I think I may put in up by the Walmart on Rt 26 in Frederick and paddle up river and just enjoy the day. It will be a nice test run for me since I'm transporting a 10' Kayak in the hatchback of my Camaro. I have T-tops so I can't get a roof rack, but I tested it out, it fits!! 1 Quote

For somebody as impatient as me with working lures, they keep me busy. i spent most of last fishing season using crankbaits almost exclusively. But I'm very happy to be adding spinnerbaits to my arsenal. Quote
