I'm really jealous sitting reading all these great posts! I REALLY wanted to get out since I have the day off but after my eye procedure today no driving for me, doctors orders.

Oh well, I spooled my reel with some suffix elite (8lbs), tied on a lipless crank and thought about the fish that I'm not catching. Then took some inventory to see what I need more of...anyone see those new small koppers frogs (1/4 oz)? I think I'm gonna try it out. Yeah I'm a rambling fishing fool. Maybe I'll get out on Saturday morning if I get lucky. Oh well...

Yeah Ken, take care of your eyes. The fish will wait for ya. Hang in there buddy, you'll be hookin' up some hawgs before ya know it.

Thanks Kevin for the well wishes! Definitely doesn't help to read your great posts...lol.

I tried to convince my wife that I felt fine and would drive VERY carefully, after all it's only an eight mile drive or so. That didn't quite work...

Too bad I wasnt there with 65lb braid this time haha

Very nice fish Bill!

Right I guess I can't always count on Super Nick to swoop in and save the day! Bummer.

So it's not just an inside joke, Nick did just that one day. I had a new lipless crankbait (Sebile Flatt Shad, which I love) get caught on some braid in the water and couldn't free it up. He came over and cast his braided line out caught mine and pulled it in and the one it was attached to! We figured the other line mine have been 30#. So the moral of the story is 65# trumps 30#!

^^That was a first for me lol. Figured a jig and braid would do the trick, that braid will pull logs out of the water!

Thanks Nick! I survived today. Now to see if I can get enough done around the house to make it out on Saturday or Sunday!

Yeah, I didnt make it out today either. I have a free day friday and saturday also, and will be hitting BH at some point.

A little off topic...

Can anyone presently access the signature page? Especially any of the newer guys? Sean tried to help me locate it but I'm still not seeing it and I'm starting to wonder if it's just not showing up for me.

Thanks,

Kevin

Got it! Thanks to all.

I can see it just fine. Clicked on my profile name at the top, selected settings, then signature was on the list on the left. I was able to access it.

Kevin,

Scroll to the top of the page. You'll see your username next to the inbox and notification buttons. Click your username and a dropdown menu should appear. Click on "Settings". When the Settings page loads, there is a menu on the left of your screen with "Signature" listed in it. Click that, and you'll be good.

Hope this helps.

Thanks to Sean, BIll and NIck for your help.

I don't know what changed, but it finally appears for me. You'll notice my new sig. Before I just had Display Name and then Ignore directly below it.

Anyone hitting up BH today? I'm very strongly considering heading out there in a few hours...

Maybe this weekend? I just bought a new TM so it needs to be installed first.

It's quiet in here today. I hope you guys are on the water. My wife is due back in tonight after being out of the country for two weeks. So that means I had one day to get all the cleaning done that should've been getting over the two weeks.

So no fishing for me today. Maybe tomorrow bright and early...

Anyone on here throw a baitcaster? I have been trying to teach myself how to and I am ok with it but wouldn't mind getting shown the right way to throw it if I ran into one of you all who use it at B Hills

I think a few of us do. That's what I use primarily, I know Brian (BrianinMD) and Sean (Basser89) use them also. I have my spinning gear, but I rarely use them. I have a few baitcasters in different ratios, but they all work the same pretty much. Few different ways to cast, but i've learned that practice is key. Even if its in your back yard (Which i did for a few days when I got my first baitcaster).

I agree, the only way to learn is to do the Nike thing, "Just Do It", but practice helps.

When I shore fish, I carry a baitcaster for my heavier lures and a medium spinning rod for my finesse stuff. If I'm in a boat, I'll have as much as two baitcasters, a pitching/flipping rod/reel, and two spinning finesse rods. The amount of space in the boat determines how many rods I bring, less space, less rods, etc. Baitcasting gear gives you a different way to present bigger lures like spinnerbaits, flipping with jigs, etc., crankin'...and they have a bit more crankin' power IMHO, and they're accurate because you can stop your cast with a simple press of the thumb.

When you buy one and practice, learn to cast from any angle (overhead, side, back hand, underhand - pitch/flip). The key is to be versatile. Don't worry about casting distance but instead focus on accuracy. Distance will come with practice and experience.

You guys may have just coaxed me into picking one up. Can anyone tell me what a decent starter rig should cost? I'd prefer it to be something I could grow into rather than have to replace as I improve. Also perhaps what the minimal bearing count and a good all purpose gear ratio would be. Or anything else that should be considered?

Thanks in advance!

I've always been in love with my Curado reels. 200e5 and 200e7, I prefer the e5 for crankbaits. Not sure if those models are available anymore since they've released the Chronarch line, but there are still Curado reels to be found. You'll probably look at the price tag and move along like I did at first, but any of the higher end baitcasters are worth it imo.

I'd take a look at two different things...first, pick a good reel, if you take care of them properly they'll last for years and years. Check the on-line stores and read the reviews.

I've been a Shimano fan for years. I've had Diawa's, Shakespears, ABU Garcia, Quantums and others, and although most of them were decent reels, I've felt that that usability, durability, and design of the Shimanos fit my fishing style better.

I recently deviated by purchasing an Ardent flipping reel because it seemed innovative. Although I use it, I'm not happy with it. The quality isn't good. The flipping switch never worked, and the clutch doesn't engage every now and then properly. Most of the time when pitching or flipping, I don't need the flipping switch anyway, so when I use it the reel does an OK job for how I use it, so I just kept it, but I wouldn't buy another one. Although I like the flipping design for the most part, looking back in hindsight, I would have purchased another Shimano Castaic (always been good for me when flipping).

Buy a reel that suits what you want to do, and that will dicate the price. If you want to flip, the Castaic is good, but so is the Core. If you want to just cast and retrieve, and maybe do a little flipping, the Curado is a good reel. I own both and love them both.

As for the rod, again, find ones that suit what you want to do. If you just want one to start out, maybe think about the combos available by the on-line stores. The rod prices are reasonable especially when purchased as the combo. I've had good luck with rods purchased that way.

I'm not brand specific, but I have yet to own a baitcasting rod that I didn't like. I've owned a Diawa flipping telescoping rod, I currently use a Powell flipping/pitching rod, and love both of them. I've owned Shimano rods which were good too. I currently use St. Croix Avids, and all of theirs have worked well with me. I'm a fan of graphite, and all of them have worked well for me.

The "round" baitcasters are nice too especially when chucking huge heavy baits. I just bought a Shimano Takota for tossing big musky lures, and I love it. It was a toss up between that and the ABU Garcia 7000C, and after seeing them in person opted for the Takota. I would have loved to buy a Calcutta, but it was out of my budget at the time. But as a beginning baitcaster, I'd avoid the round ones for now. The low profile ones tend to have better magnets and such to help eliminate backlashes.

By the way, you will backlash, and don't be embarassed. It happens to everyone at the beginning, and even happens to experienced users including pros. You will learn how to prevent them and how to pick them out. The more you use them, the less it will happen. Eventually, you will love them.

Good luck in your choice Kevin. Again, read the reviews of those in the prices that you are interested in. If you start with a less expensive model, just make sure that it is designed to do what you're asking it to do.

Wal-Mart actually had a real nice abu-garcia combo for 100$ in frederick the other night.Might be worth checking out

Nick and Kevin, thank you both for your input! One more question, should a right handed person like myself buy the RH version of the reel?

The one off of 85 or the one off of 26? If its not a round one, or one of the plastic low profiles...def something i'd be into for $100.

lol very good question with a very simple answer. Do what feels right.

I am right handed and use a RH retrieve, personally. I've seen people do the opposite, its just whatever youre comfortable with.

Thanks Boett43, I'll check the local one to see if they have it and if it'll work.
