Potomac mixed bag 08/16/11

I got out after work yesterday for a couple hours. My buddy Howard was going to meet me but something came up and he couldn’t make it. The river is in good shape, up a bit, and with a little stain to it. The biggest problem though, was that there’s a lot of star grass pieces floating everywhere, and it’s a buzzbait nightmare, clogging the blades and ruining the action. I made a lot of good casts that were ruined by that stuff. And, on top of that, the water had some stain to it, otherwise I'd have used a rage toad.

Now the results: I had one hog explode on my lure but missed it. I tried a couple more casts and it wouldn’t hit again, and followed with a worm without any luck. I stuck with the buzzer though and managed to catch three keeper sized bass (two largemouth and a smallmouth) all between 12” and 14”. I did get one other dink smallie on a worm. All of the fish hit at dusk. The highlight of the trip was just after dark, when I had another explosion in the out at the end of my cast. As I fought the fish in the dark, I thought it was a decent bass but to my surprise, it was a 21” channel catfish. I tried to get a picture but my camera couldn’t pick it up.

No pics this time, I took some but they didn’t turn out. My camera is broken and I need a new one once I get my daughter moved back into school. I want a waterproof digital Sony…

Made it out to Black Hills on Saturday evening from 5-8:45pm with a friend of mine and we did great (at least for us)! He had three- 15 and 18 incher, and a dink. And I had a dink with a 18 incher. Check out the pic below.

Lots of nice fish and pics posted lately. We got out last night to Middletown Pond. Water was low and kinda blueish looking and no one was fishing but us. I caught two LM on a Power Shakeyhead Worm and a Power Tube. One was only a 10 incher but the other was a 15 1/2 incher and weighed about 2 1/4 pounds. Gonna try and post a pic that my son took with a cell phone. We wanted to try and hit Brownsville but ran out of time. Was glad to see the usual slop floating on top at Middeltown was not to be seen.post-23780-0-74238300-1314022267_thumb.j

Hey MD crew, does anyone in the montgomery county/Germantown/Potomac area ever have much luck bank fishing at the Potomac River? Been a few times in the past month but havent had too much luck so i've been sticking to the lakes and ponds. I have Pennyfield, Rileys and a few other locks nearby....just curious to see any reports of these areas, if any.

Not sure about that far down river but up here in Washington County there are a lot of good spots. Actually some of the best spots you cannot get to in a boat. Try fishing baitfish colored flukes below any dam you can find.

Hey all, been awhile for me. Got out tonight at black hills. Had no luck sorta had to use some tackle i didnt really like. Few guys on a boat said the fish were in about 25 feet of water which I thought was odd considering it was late and getting chilly. Now I use my weightless rigged worm. Even threw out a rubber crayfish. Am I using the wrong thing. I have never really fished late summer early fall before. Any advice appreciated. I know I ask 10000 questions sorry lol.

Kewl vid David, and nice fish.

Ken, I think that my buddy and I drove by that evening and saw you fishing with your buddy. We were driving around checking out the deer population and decided to drive to the ramp and take a look around. It's always hard driving to a lake without fishing gear, LOL! I was going to say something, but then thought that it would be best not to hassle the anglers during the magic hour! Next time I'll say hey.

Definitely feel free to stop by and say hi next time!

I'm looking forward to getting out this weekend. I'm hoping with the drop in temps over the past couple of weeks the fish have moved to shallower water. Being new to bass fishing, I'm really looking forward to the fall bite!

Have not posted in awhile but wanted to post this noteworthy accomplishment. My son Gavin who is four landed his first bass today without any help from old dad except for holding for the picture. He caught five today fishing plastics very slowly (just like dad) including his first solo the one in the picture.

Yeah, I haven't been very attentive lately, for which I apologize. I know by all the nice flowers I have received that I am missed...ROFL. Sometimes you just get swamped with the every day, and have to set priorities....hold it...may be that's the problem...fishing should be THE top priority! Problem solved! I'll be posting every day, now!

Just wanted top check in with everyone to see how the Fall fishing has been. I've been getting out about once a week at Black Hills, but the fishing has really been off ever since that heavy rain a few weeks ago.

I fish from the banks and wanted to see if anyone has any helpful hints for fall fishing at Black Hills. This is my first year bass fishing, and i was looking forward to the famous fall bite, but so far been very dissappointed. And I've thrown everything- spinners, shallow cranks, jigs and my beloved Senkos. I've been frequentling the tubes, the fingertip/backwash area and the stick ups to no avail. I've managed of couple of dinks here and there, but nothing to write home about. The anglers I've spoken to have said the same.

Any pointers wouild be highly appreciated! Feel free to send me a PM.

Thanks!

Ken I agree, I need some fall help as well. I have been to Black Hills almost everyday the past two weeks and fishing has been off since heavy rain weeks ago. Throwing rubber worms, crankbaits, spinnerbaits. I have caught one dink in the backwash area in the past two weeks and havent heard of anyone else at the lake having any success

I wish I could add much to this but for some reason, once october hits, I struggle hooking up myself. With that said, I did squeeze in a lunch time outing on friday. I managed one largemouth on a strike king buzzbait, turned out to be 20 1/4" and weighed 4lbs 1oz.

Depending on the time of day, i've been having good luck with a strike king red eye shad. Also, shad colored cranks have gotten me some fish closer to shore. Farther out i've had okay luck with t-rigged senkos and flukes twitched along the bottom.

I've heard that shakey heads will get em, but i have yet to try.

Good luck, and if any of you ever want to meet up at any of the mont. co. lakes (outside of the get-together)- i'd be glad to make those arrangements.

Got out yesterday on the upper Potomac out of Edwards Ferry. The bite was extremely slow for some reason, did manage a few smallies. However the highlight of the day was a 4lb largemouth on a crankbait. Rather surprised to get a LM of that size in that area of the river. The water was higher than normal for this time of the year and still cloudy, not sure why.

Fished a different Eastern Shore pond on Monday. We had it all to ourselves. Here's my report:

Howard and I took off work yesterday and hit one of our favorite Eastern Shore ponds. We had it all to ourselves, all day long. Yesterday was a typical day for us on that lake. You seem to work hard for your fish, but at the end of the day you look at your numbers and it turns out to be a pretty daggone good day of fishing. I caught 16 fat bluegills (the smallest one is pictured below, some were so big that they were deformed), 14 yellow perch with some of them fairly nice, 19 chain pickerel with several of them between 20 and 23” long, one fat three pound (weighed on the nose at three even), two medium sized but fat crappie, and one golden shiner to give me six species caught in one day for a total of 53 fish on the day. There were times where we struggled to catch fish at our usual hot spots on the lake, but we found fish at places where we normally don’t catch them. Howard had similar numbers including also a three pound largemouth, and he lost another good bass that tossed his lure right back at him on an acrobatic leap near the boat.

The hot lure for the pickerel and bass was once again the white chatterbait, followed by a perch color Bagley’s floating minnow, and a green pumpkin plastic worm. The worm also caught several of the larger yellow perch. The rest of the panfish were caught on Kalin’s Triple Threat grubs in the lemon meringue color. The biggest disappointment on the day was that we couldn’t locate the big school of crappie that we normally do, and the bass fishing shut down around 10 AM when the front moved through. The good news was that the pickerel and perch fishing turned out to be pretty hot especially at the end of the afternoon. Another thing to note, I increased my line size for worm fishing with Nanofil to the 8 pound test, moving my 6 pound test (two pound diameter) line to my panfish set up. So far, the results are good for both. I was able to toss the ultralight panfish jig (1/48 oz.) for good distance without any effort, further than when using 4 pound fluorocarbon line. The fish didn’t seem to be line shy whatsoever.

In summary, we had a real fun day on the water.

This one of Howard's pickerel had battle scars on it, perhaps an osprey survivor?

And the sixth species of the day, a big golden shiner, bait :D Too bad there weren't muskies in here LOL.
