NY is tomorrow, stop trying to get rid of me.....

After reading fishing reports and pictures from Black Lake I am stoked to go after some of those (not so) skinny, tiny pike. Most of the time will be fishing for smallmouth and largemouth, but will try for some walleye and yellow perch to eat. Unless the person who's boat I will be in is against it will try for a pike or two also, just for fun.

Someone has to give you a hard time! LOL!

Good luck up there and don't forget to send some pics down!

I saw what???

Its all part of the fishing, part of what makes it fun when you do get the big ones in. I am having a rough year for big fish, best LM is 4lbs 4oz, best smallie is 3lb 1oz. Hope to get out of that funk soon.

It's been a weird but pretty good year for me. My numbers are way up but my big fish numbers are down. My biggest largemouth so far is 4 lbs. 14 oz. and my biggest smallie was 3 lb. 8 oz. I've got more smallies over three. A day good day on the Susquehanna can really boost your big fish count :P

I'm confident that as long as I keep putting the time in the big fish numbers will pick up. I'm thinkin' that some summer buzzin' could improve my odds.

No doubt there Kevin! Numbers are still down from what I usually average but I had a horrible year last year and numbers are up from last years totals this time so that's a good sign. There's a chance I'll get out this evening but not 100%. Keeping my fingers crossed the stars will align and I'll get out! :D

I'm going to get out also, but I'm getting in the water somewhere :P

I had half a thought about going for toothy critters which would require getting a little wet but not sure I want to drive that far for them. Will probably stick local this evening (IF I make it out).

My plans fell through, so I'm stayin in the AC. I had to work later than I wanted also which didn't help. I considered tomorrow but they're calling for temps tomorrow to be 106 F (and that's not the heat index either). :surprised-038:

I ended up getting out for about an hour and a half or so. Just hit the backwash area at Black Hills. Had 3 hits on a Spro Bronze Eye, guessing 2 or those hits were just little farts nipping at the legs. The last hit, which happened to be the last cast of the evening, turned out to be one about a pound and a half. Would work the frog about 5-6' with quick hops and then would kill it for a few seconds. This one hit the 3rd time I killed it. Not too bad for the short time I was able to get out.

By the way, when did they put up the barriers on the tubes? Guess its been a little while since I've been over there.

My schedule is getting worse and worse. The way it looks, I may not get out till next weekend. I did manage to pick up a black Spro Bronze Eye and some Rage Tail Craws that I'm looking forward to eventually trying out. The key word being eventually...

Sean, I was at Black Hills last Saturday morning from 5:30 - 10am and fished the tubes and there weren't any barriers then so they must have just put them up. That's too bad since I especially like fishing one of them in the early morning or late evening. :(

Oh yeah, I caught three dinks in the first 45 minutes (off that tube) and nothing for the rest.

Ken, I should have clarified a little more. Those barriers are nothing more than the road closed 2x4 barriers that they use at the boat ramp over the winter. I did step across the one to make a few casts to parallel the shore. Even if you don't cross over the barrier like I did, I think there's enough room along the sides of them to effectively fish the tubes still.

It's been a few years since I've done it but I used to go over there at lunch and fish the tubes and catch several by just flippin tubes down in the holes in the hydrilla. I've seen some good fish (in the 4-6# range) in there even in the hottest part of the day! ;)

I may just get out tomorrow night! My wife is a nurse and she's working nights this wekeend, but my mother told me she'd may be able to watch my daughter on Saturday, if so I'll be out there from 4:30 till the sun goes down and perhaps first thing Sunday morning.

I'll try to confirm tomorrow afternoon, but hopefully I'll see someone out there if I'm able to go.

Didn't realize it had been a while since I posted. Welcome to the new posters. You joined a great and helpful forum run by Basser89. We not been having much success lately at the river. Have caught a few at Sharpsburg Pond and Cacapon Park Lake in Berkeley Springs WV. I'm gonna try and put up a couple photos if I can. One will be about a 16-18 inch LM caught on a Watermelon Yum Dinger and I'm guessing 3-4 pounds. This picture may not show too well. Other is about a 1 1/2 LM my son caught on a Pearl Yum Dinger a couple of weeks ago. They don't measure up to some of the pics here. My boss is on vacation this coming week and we're short-handed...looks like a pretty stressful week ahead. Hope to get out maybe it will help with all the worries I'll have. I'll try the pics next post.

Looks like pictures didn't turn out quite right. I had to right-click and then re-open them. :( On a side note Basser89 - did you ever think about doing a get-together of the posters here? I see on some of the other threads guys try and do it. I'm sure it would be hard to organize but it looks like Black Hills would be a good place especially after Labor Day...if the fishing is still good there. Just a thought and to me you would make a great host.

I bet we could get everyone together if it took place at my honey hole...lol

Wow! Thanks for the kind words wv! Much appreciated!

I have helped set a get together up several years back for PA and made some good friends that way. Let's start here and see if there's any interest on doing a get together.

Im in for a meet...

Went up to Upper Potomac near Antietam Campground. God knows how I found it after "Fat Boy" giving me good directions.

River looked fairly clear,we fished from shore for about an hour. I tried a few different things and my 7yr old did as well. She is a good sport even though she is 1-3 for the year catching fish.

Did manage a smallie on a hellgrammite. It was a youngster so not much action. My daughter enjoyed seeing it. Had another but shook my hook under water, didn't set it too well. Need to figure some rigging ways for these soft plastics. Smallies love them!

But a nice sunset on river and spending time with my little one!

Next trip - get my boat out finally!

My son and I would be up for a meet. We could most likely make any Sunday...if it's gonna be on a Saturday I would need about a month's notice to try and get off work. I work in a grocery store and Saturday's are kinda hard to get off. Any location decided on would be OK. We would fish from shore if any fishing is done. Would also be willing to help with any refreshments, etc.

Nice picture and good story. If you parked at the campground itself...you can take that road(Canal Road - i think)and you will eventually reach a small parking lot as the road makes a sharp turn to go up a hill to MD Route 34. If you walk across the Lock bridge and turn left or right you come to two paths where my son and I mostly fish the river. Trouble there is a lot of hikers, bikers, dog walkers and parents with kids take up the few parking spots. Not complaining just making a comment. You can go across the Rumsey Bridge into Shepherdstown and use the boat ramp there. I've seen guys have a little trouble there when river is low so I'd be careful there. We see lots of boats put in there. I know you can go upstream...maybe to Snyder's Landing and downstream to just pass the railroad bridge. I'm guessing it would be good to have a depth finder. We've got a 10 foot jon boat but haven't got in the water yet but hope to sometime soon.

I'll second the cool pic and story!

To add to wv's comments, at the current levels, I don't believe it's possible to make it up to Snyder's from Shepardstown. There's a shallow ledge down below Snyder's that runs all the way across. You MIGHT be able to navigate it with the trolling motor (its been a while since I've been down that far). And down below Shepardstown, it does get rather shallow again. I used to go wading for smallies down below the RR bridge and there are several sets of riffles/rock ledges down there that are probably too low to pass over too.

Looks like I have the green light to get out this evening. Will probably hit Black Hills somewhere, not sure where yet though. If anyone else is heading out this evening, let me know, maybe we can meet up!

Oh, and I figured I'd give it a week on this thread to see if anyone else would be up for a get together. I know BrianinMD is in NY still but I've given him a heads up on it. He's up for it too if it doesn't conflict with his tourney schedule. I'll start another thread for the get together after the week is up on here.
