Fat Boy Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 Nice hog of a bass there David! Here's my report from Saturday... My buddy Howard and I got out on Saturday with the intention of hitting a pickerel/largemouth spot in a Western Maryland first, then wade for smallies somewhere in MD or PA. Our trip didn't quite start off as planned... Strike One - On the way to the first spot, this happened: Strike Two - Our largemouth/pickerel spot was a bust. The water was about 2' too low, and the entire place was choked with weeds. I managed to catch four 12" largemouth. Strike Three - We decided to hit the Potomac and do some wading for smallmouth. We wanted to try a new place, so we checked out a couple and decided to give one place a try. At first it looked promising, but when we actually tried to wade it moving around was kind of tough, plus, that spot lacked that nice rocky ledge or chunk rock structure that you'd like to see. Anf finally, the smallmouth just weren't hitting. Usually, three strikes and we're out... ..Now, that might be enough for many to call it quits, but we decided to head North into PA and try wading a small stream. Rather than prospect for a new spot, we decided to head to a known location that has been productive for us in the past. We finished with pretty comparable numbers. I landed 20 smallmouth, mostly small but spunky, but some in the 13 to 15" range, and 30 rock bass. I lost a lot of fish too, so the fish were fairly agressive. Not bad for about 4 hours of fishing time and it saved our day. Here are some pics from our day on the stream: Scenery Shot My "rocky" in the foreground, Howard's humpback smallie in the background: Howard's humpback smallmouth...this fish had a weird humped back: Another scenery shot with Howard landing a fish: Quote
KenLattimore Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 I went out to Black Hills yesterday evening for two hours up until the sun set. Caught this solid three pounder and lost a even bigger one when I got cut off. I need to get a scale and tape measure so can "know " what I've caught! Quote
Basser714 Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 July 4 BH Report 11am Overcast and humid but NO wind and the water is clear. A good day to kayak with no wind. I worked the shore for an hour and saw lots of small fish near shore including my first yellow perch sighting. I saw a big boy cruising shore and headed out to deeper water. I got a few medium bites but landed nothing working the classic green pumpkin soft plastics. I did see a lot of action on the top of water, nothing big splashing just a lot of little circular wakes all over the cove I was in. Quote
basser89 Posted July 5, 2011 Author Posted July 5, 2011 Those are some great bass David! Congrats! Sorry to hear how your trip started out Fat Boy! Glad you hung in there and ended up wetting some line! You posted some great pics! Good to see 301-fisherman, Ken and Basser714 catching some too! Got out a little on sunday, had a little time before I picked up my daughter so I popped in to the pond in Sharpsburg. I only had about 15 minutes so as I walked around the pond, I spooked a bass from right up along the shore line. Made a cast out past it and swam the ribbon tail worm I had on over by it and killed it. That's all that was needed, it came right on over and sucked it up and started swimming off. Turned out to be about a 15 incher. Took my daughter over to middletown to fish later on in the day, no luck there. Hopefully, I can get out a time or two this week! Quote
301-fisherman Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 ken where were you at in black hills when you pulled that one in. I go there frequently and need new places in the park to try Quote

basser89 Posted July 8, 2011 Author Posted July 8, 2011 Congrats on another great bass David! I be jealous! I got out this evening for a little while, I hit Black Hills again. On my very last cast, I got a hit. Reeled down and set the hook, SNAP! Clean cut. So my guess a musky decided a 7" ribbon tail worm looked good. LOL! Quote
301-fisherman Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 where were you at when it happened basser? I thought i saw a muskie in there one day but no sight of one since.. Quote
basser89 Posted July 8, 2011 Author Posted July 8, 2011 where were you at when it happened basser? I thought i saw a muskie in there one day but no sight of one since.. While the majority of my musky action has been in the back wash area down by the boat ramp and that's been a few years since I've had much luck in there with them, I wasn't in the park itself fishing this evening. I was back off Wynnfield road (spelling). In along the rip rap is where I usually see them in there but I was back around to the left from that this evening. Any musky in there now is gonna be huge since they haven't stocked tigers in there since 2004. I've also seen musky back by the 121 bridge, back the arm past the 121 bridge, back by the stick ups and right by the visitors center too. I did have one other encounter this year with a musky (with the same resuly, getting cut off) down in the backwash area. That one took one of my favorite spinnerbaits. Quote
KenLattimore Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 Managed to get out to Black Hills yesterday and fished for about 3 hours until sunset. Had the opportunity to meet 301 and we fished a few spots. Not a lot of action but hooked 3 and landed two small ones. The one that got away was a decent fish, maybe 2 1/2-3 lbs but I lost it when it wrapped itself around a floating log... Quote
301-fisherman Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 ken got back out last night. pulled a bass out of your spot, nothing much to talk about size wise....other than that it was a relatively slow night! A few of us guys need to go out one day and fish Quote
KenLattimore Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Good going! I'm still planning on getting out on Sat or Sunday, just gotta see how things work out with the family over the weekend. I'll drop you a line on Saturday morning to let you know. ken got back out last night. pulled a bass out of your spot, nothing much to talk about size wise....other than that it was a relatively slow night! basser89 Posted July 12, 2011 Author Posted July 12, 2011 I was hoping to get out this evening for a little while but those plans fell through. I might be able to get out tomorrow evening or thursday evening. Not sure where I want to hit yet. Hmmmmm.......... Quote

I might be able to get out tomorrow evening or thursday evening. Not sure where I want to hit yet. Hmmmmm.......... Good luck! I believe tomorrow night is when Black Hills is open till midnight so that is great. Unfortunately I won't be able to make it tomorrow, but maybe when they do it in August. I'm off from work Friday and have a couple of things ot take care of, but going to try to get out for a couple of hours in the afternoon, maybe 1-3pm. Otherwise, it's looking like I'll get out there either Saturday or Sunday, in the morning this time though (6-10am) since family obilgations won't allow for the evening. Going to try the bridge and the area you refer to as the stick-ups, then maybe go to old faithful. Quote
KenLattimore Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 BTW- is anyone familiar with Urbana Lake Fish Management Area? I believe it used to be called Chevy Chase Lake. Quote
basser89 Posted July 12, 2011 Author Posted July 12, 2011 BTW- is anyone familiar with Urbana Lake Fish Management Area? I believe it used to be called Chevy Chase Lake. I knew there was a pond in Urbana and from what I was told, it was shallow and really got choked out with grass. I google mapped this lake and it's not where I was expecting it to be. Looks interesting, will ask around with some of my friends that aren't on here to see if I can get any info about it. Quote
dcfdpipeman Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 The little pond is not far from me, I could check it out. Also: I ended up getting another boat... 2001 Tracker Bass Boat, 17' with a 50hp Merc. Really set up well for bass fishing. So, living in Frederick... I need a few places to take her out and hunt for the big ones.. well anyones.. Would like to use the gas motor to see if any kinks need to be worked out. I can always run down to Lake Anna or out to Deep Creek but was looking for some closer launching points. Any help would be great. Thanks Peter ps. My old boat that was destroyed by a freak tornado... my brother is fixing it up in Mass so he can fish. Both our insurances gave us practically nothing.. ya.. it hurts right "there"... Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted July 13, 2011 Super User Posted July 13, 2011 dcfdpipeman, you can also take you boat to Mattowomen to test out the motor. If you go on the DC beltway to Indian Headpark way, to Mattingly Rd. Its the last left before you get to the gates to the Naval Research center. At the end of that road is a nice ramp which puts in the no wake area. If you go right from the ramp you are in no wake for a nice long way then it opens up to full motor. Plenty of room to test the motor and good fishing too. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted July 13, 2011 Super User Posted July 13, 2011 Another thought popped into my head, to actually fish where I said you need a tidal license and be part of the national registry..... not as good of an idea as it was when earlier Quote

I was told about it when I took my car in to get serviced, me and the tech started talking about fishing and he mentioned this lake and a couple of firends told him it holds some nice fish. Being that it's off the beaten path and you literally have to drive down a dirt road to get there I thought it may be a neat little gem that wouldn't recieve much pressure. I may very well drive there to check it out myself, just wondering if anyone had some info on it before I make the trip. DCFD, I read this entire thread to pick up pointers on the area and saw your "little" mishap. Congrats on the new boat and tight lines! Unfortunately I fish the banks so I couldn't help you out with launch points. I think I'll look into puchasing a boat once I become a little more experienced, I definitely have the bug! -Ken Quote
basser89 Posted July 13, 2011 Author Posted July 13, 2011 I talked to my one buddy here at work that fished the lake. Turns out he hasn't fished it in YEARS and can't remember anything about it. Got some things going on right after work this evening so if I hit anywhere it'll probably be Black Hills for a little while. Maybe tomorrow evening I may get a chance to run up there and check it out. Congrats DCFD on the new boat! Sorry to hear the insurance company wouldn't give you much for the one that tangled with the tornado. That really sucks! As for launches, I believe I had posted before about DNR's boat ramp guide. If you need the link again, let me know. I haven't hit any of the ramps in Frederick or Montgomery county on the Potomac. If you want a list of the spots I've hit in Washington county, let me know. Quote
dcfdpipeman Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 Basser, shoot me Washington Co. area.. I think this maybe closer. Trying to get a few places under my belt and after feeling comfortable, take my daughter out. Im pretty comfortable in a boat and launching a boat. So yes, Washington Co.! I hear so much about Mattawomen, need to check into the permits and I don't mind.. The biggest obstacle is know where to launch and not launch a bass boat.. ------ The Urbana pond - I will check it out in the morning. I do believe you can't drive back to the pond but walk. ----- Waiting on registrations from DNR and title my trailer. -Peter Quote
