Nice_Bass Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 Evergreen may be worth a trip for you in that case...serious monsters in there with smaller fish as well to keep you casting. On a plus side I usually catch a few 6 pound bass there every year as well throwing oversized baits. It would be hard to travel south though when a shorter trip is available to the north...lake is only 10 minutes north for me! 1 Quote
Tracker22 Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 That is a monster fish. Do y'all use a steel leader to catch those things? I think it would be great to have an online tourney, north vs south. Of course it would be difficult for the south since most of us don't have Internet... Or "real boats"! Then again, we don't have Asian carp either. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted June 29, 2016 Super User Posted June 29, 2016 #65-80 braid and an #80 fluoro leader. Some stuff I do fish direct which is risky but its pike that are more of an issue versus Musky. I don't use steel/titanium leaders anymore. Fluoro doesn't mess with the action of baits as badly as a wire leader does. That fish was caught on a Deps 175 SS in flash carp. Her teeth did some damage to the shell of the bait but nothing some super glue and a toothpick couldn't fix. Once you catch a fish of that size, you could care less if a $100 lure gets busted up. It's all worth it. The same trip my boat partner caught a 50" on a bucktail. Pardon the craziness of the camera, it was mayhem. 1 Quote
Bballkking1 Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 Hey! New guy here from the Naperville area. I've been hitting Blackwell on week nights. Catching Pike there on a Cleo spoon from 12" to 24" so far, but haven't found the bass. I'm shore fishing only. I also get to enjoy a private lake in Plainfield along 135th street for bass and crappie. I'll get some pics up soon from there. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted June 29, 2016 Super User Posted June 29, 2016 The Lakelands? You are that close to the DuPage River and not fishing it? 1 Quote
beardown34 Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 i was checking out these kicker fish texas weedless wacky worms on sale at TW, and i figured hey, i have a bag of busted plastics -- let's sniff some super glue and see what we can come up with! wacky just got a whole lot wackier. 2 Quote
Bballkking1 Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 Yea, The Lakelands. Dad is also a member at Pure Rod and Gun Club. I guess with those two options I default to them before the river. I love catching smallies so I should get out there. 6 Quote
Nice_Bass Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 Spent some time yesterday afternoon dragging a 10in worm. Only had about 2-3 hours but caught a couple nice ones in the mix. 7 Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted June 30, 2016 Super User Posted June 30, 2016 Nice chunky bass right there. Nicely done! Quote
Bballkking1 Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 What strategies are you guys using during this long stretch of consistent, warm, sunny weather? Slower or fast? Deeper during the days? Quote
Tracker22 Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 Get to the lake before dawn and fish top water. Quote
Nice_Bass Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Consistent weather is the best weather! I fish deep and slow...but I do for most of the year aside for a couple weeks in the spring and a few more in the fall. Have not really seen thermocline set up yet 100% but I would be it should be in full affect (effect?) any day now. Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted July 2, 2016 Super User Posted July 2, 2016 I got this 3# today I got a couple nice jumps out of it as well. The second jump was a good 2+ feet out of the water and put a big smile on my face. A passerby took notice and even said "wow that flew out of the water". 2 Quote
Super User slonezp Posted July 2, 2016 Super User Posted July 2, 2016 In the past month, I've caught all my big largemouth on slow presentations in water less than 8ft. I gave caught more fish using swimjigs Quote
beardown34 Posted July 3, 2016 Posted July 3, 2016 omg Mark, that rat looks literally unreal! 1 Quote
papajoe222 Posted July 3, 2016 Posted July 3, 2016 I know there are those that don't put much stock in the moon's affects on fish behavior. I, on the other hand, always included 'moon notes' in my fishing logs. Although I no longer keep a log, I still take note of both the moon phase and it's position. This year, the major feeding seems to be taking place when the moon is in the last third of the sky. The flip side is around 2.5hrs. prior to its appearance. Either of those two times, I'm using reaction baits and covering water. As the bite dies down, I'm slowing down and fishing tighter to cover in any shade I can find. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted July 4, 2016 Super User Posted July 4, 2016 A nice solid bass on the 316 Baby wake last night. Crushed it running it through some emergent vegetation in about 2 FOW. 5 Quote
Bballkking1 Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 This was the best of 4 from the 4th. I got in some casts between celebration festivities. She isn't super large, but I wish I had a tape on me. Caught on a watermelon Senko. Literally everytime I put a new senko on, I caught a fish first or second cast and didn't catch another until I switched senkos. 5 Quote
Nice_Bass Posted July 7, 2016 Posted July 7, 2016 have not made it out recently- severe weather seems to be coming in at the times/days I am able to fish. Quote
Junk Fisherman Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 Put in a day prefishing on the Des Plaines/Kankakee for an upcoming club tournament. Bleck- what an ugly waterway! I'm still thinking about all that clear, clean water I was fishing in northern Michigan last month. Could only muster 2 lousy keepers and a half dozen shorts. LOL- I am already in for the tournament but I can see it being the last time I ever fish out there. I don't even care that it's close. Quote

Been doing the best from 11:00pm-1:00am. Black/blue spinner bait with big Colorado blade Quote
