GrundleLove Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 For anyone who lives in the Northeast i'm sure you are more than aware of the silly amount of snow we have been getting. This being said, the lakes and ponds have a lot of snow on top of them, making it difficulty to judge how the ice conditions are. I went out yesterday and stood on the edge of a local pond that was covered in snow, but could not really tell if it was safe to make a hole? Are there any tips or ways to tell other than to just start drilling and see what happens? What kind of conditions do you look for when seeing if ice is safe? Quote
Bassnajr Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Call the DEM or DNR where you live. They send teams out to monitor the ice thickness. I don't ice fish but there is a board I know folks go to called iceshanty.com. The folks there can help you too I am sure. Good luck and be careful!!! Quote
Uncle Leo Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Always use a spud and spud your way out. No ice is safe no matter how thick it is. Natural springs can play havoc on the ice, compound with extra weight of snow on top can be a disaster. Be very careful and safe. Trust no one judgement untill you spud and make sure it is safe. Super User Shane J Posted January 31, 2011 Super User Posted January 31, 2011 I don't trust it right now. I'm not much of an ice fisherman, either, but no way I'm going out on it! My buddy took his sled on a lake last week, and it broke, and he was in up to his waist. Not fun! Quote
NHFisher Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 I was out on Heads pond on Sat. We followed others tracks out and at one point the guy in the lead sank up to his knees!! He said the ice was safe but sometimes the weight of the snow pushes the ice down a bit and some water comes over the top. Scared the crap out of me but when we got to where we were fishing the ice was 15 inches thick.this was my first time out on the ice. I don't think I'll go anywhere without someone hows been on the lake this winter. Quote
DeanFishesNY Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 All the lakes and ponds here in Southern NY are iced up real good. Every place has at least 8 inches of ice that I've been to. I would think you should be fine unless you go out where there's moving water or something to warm up a part of the lake? Will probably ice fish tomorrow morning after this storm but man I can't wait for warmer weather to come and melt this crap! Quote
Super User webertime Posted February 3, 2011 Super User Posted February 3, 2011 http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?board=8.0 I hope I'm not breaking any rules by posting this for you, but this place should be able to help you a bunch. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted February 3, 2011 Super User Posted February 3, 2011 Is the water hard? If so, I consider it unsafe. LOL Not a big fan of being on the ice. Quote
