Moving to Indiana

We will be moving to the Terre Haute area in the not so distant future. My inlaws live there, so I have spent a little time there, done a little fishing - but not a lot.

I know there are quite a few old strip mine pits that have decent fishing. Sounds like quite a few are private, though.

If anyone has suggestions of places to try, let me know.

I would also be interested to hear about some of the bigger lakes I can take the boat out on - even if it's a drive.

Also, are there any Bass fishing clubs in the area? I wouldn't mind trying to fish some club tourneys next season if my schedule will allow.

Minnehaha SFWA, Greene Sullivan State Forest, Shakamak State Park will get you started, trolling motor only. The nearest "motor" lakes are probably Raccoon and Mill Creek in Illinois!

Waveland and Turtle Creek is not far also.

Thanks guys, I went to Green Sullivan last summer, and it was really cool.

I've heard about Turtle Creek, someone told me they killed the grass and the fishing was horrible now.

That would be correct about TC, there are also some reports beginning to surface about a fish kill due to some type of chemical poisoning from mine waste...I've hunted TC recently, but haven't fished it for probably 20 years. Patoka is also a possibility about an hour or so South.

Thanks for the sugestions guys. That's too bad about TC, it would be nice to have a place to go that doesn't freeze in the winter. I guess there are a couple of power plant lakes in IL that would be a good drive but still do-able.

Farmersburg is not that far from TH is it?

Farmersburg is about 10 miles south of TH. Depending on the weather, there may not be a freeze up. Just depends on the weather. Most of the big ones around here are the last to freeze over.

Not sure about in that neck of the woods, but further down south off I-64  you got the Hoosier national forest( there is a fee, dont remenber $$$) that has 4 small lakes that are trolling motor only, out of the way lakes, not much pressure, very nice lakes, but off the beaten path, and some hard to get to hike in ponds also. Then around the Salem area there is John hay lake and Delaney park lake, John hay gets much more pressure. You have to get a yearly sticker from Salem($20 i think) for John hay. Delaney costs around $4 per visit, not sure of yearly. Then there is Starvehollow lake around Brownstown, in off season when the beach is closed not much people at all, very nice trolling motor only lake, secluded, shallow lake, deepest water maybe 15-20', lots of big lily pads in areas. I don't think it costs after season.I could probaby even give ya a few more lakes later. All of these lakes have shown big bass for Indiana in old surveys by the DNR, 8-10lb. But, I'm just partial to out of the way, off the beaten path, trolling motor only lakes myself

Oh yeah - that will be nice, love to get down there a couple times a year!  Maybe the road trip will be there this year.
