Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted June 30, 2010 Super User Posted June 30, 2010 Bought a license to fish the Potomac. $52 for out-of-state jacks my chain a little bit and I would like to put it to good use. Anyone care to fish? I live about 20 miles north of Hagerstown and I don't mind a drive... Let me know. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted June 30, 2010 Super User Posted June 30, 2010 Man I wish I had a boat to take you out, I imagine you will find someone. Quote
NateFollmer Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 $52 for an out of state license?! Is that for the entire year? Don't they have like 3 day options? When I go to Delaware to fish the salt, I just get a week license. I'd love to fish the Potomac also, but I don't think my little vessel would survive... Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted June 30, 2010 Author Super User Posted June 30, 2010 Man I wish I had a boat to take you out, I imagine you will find someone. If you know of trolling motor only lakes where I dont need a special permit (Prettyboy and Baltimore lakes), I am game to bring the boat down with me. It's a 16ft Tracker Jon boat, very wide. 70lb up front and 55 on the back. Nate, I dont put a boat on the Pmac. All wading for me. Quote
NateFollmer Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 Ah, cool. Good luck in your venture. I have nothing of value to add so I'm gonna go post somewhere else now Let me know how you do because I have been thinking about a trip myself! Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted June 30, 2010 Author Super User Posted June 30, 2010 Two weeks ago, I caught a smallmouth down there that would have gone 6+ in the spring. Very large framed fish that was still pushing 5. Quote
oprcsr Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 Prettyboy is very nice. I thought there was a rule that you could only take the boat on Prettyboy, Liberty or Loch Raven, and no other bodies of water. This was to help ward against zebra muscles. I could be totally wrong though. Speed your not that far away from Deep Creek. I usually head out there once a year. Good fishing overall but tends to get really heavily used during the day hours by speedboats and jetskis. I love the Potomac, used to spend weeks at a time fishing in between Brunswick/Sandy Hook. Hellbenderman Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 I suppose you should know about Black Hills in Germantown, which is a ways from you, but is a VERY good lake. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted July 1, 2010 Author Super User Posted July 1, 2010 Mapquest puts me a little under 1.5 hours away, 75 miles. That is a hop, skip and jump compared to some of the lakes I have traveled to. I have heard good things about Little Seneca. It is now on the list. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted July 2, 2010 Super User Posted July 2, 2010 I am not sure about my schedule but, the college course I wanted to take filled up before I registered so I will have more free time this summer. Right now the Upper Potomac river fishing is terrible! Combine that with all the pleasure craft and I do not even want to fish it until September. Now there are some great TM only lakes that are withing a reasonable drive. Allen Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted July 4, 2010 Author Super User Posted July 4, 2010 I will be hitting the Potomac again on Tuesday evening. Got a new toy that is just dieing to get in the water...Yes Sean, another one of those. Quote
basser89 Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Well???? How did you do? Was out of town until last evening. Otherwise I would've hit you up! Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted July 7, 2010 Author Super User Posted July 7, 2010 Well???? How did you do? Was out of town until last evening. Otherwise I would've hit you up! Cancelled last evening, meeting tonight at 8pm. Saw pics of a 45" caught from there the other night. Fish did not make it, unfortunately. Quote
basser89 Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 Sad but it happens.! Can't fight them too long in the warm water, you can do a lot of damage to them by doing that! Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted July 8, 2010 Author Super User Posted July 8, 2010 Sad but it happens.! Can't fight them too long in the warm water, you can do a lot of damage to them by doing that! Unfortunately, I dont think the fish's health had anything to do with it. I believe it was just "kept." Got out last night and finally got my first confirmed hookup with a Potomac toothy. That lasted all of about .2 seconds, mostly due to me standing in awe of the silver streak demolishing my spinnerbait and my subsequent limp-wristed hookset. : There was another casualty last night, but was not caused by a fisherman. I witnessed a vicious attack by a very big musky on a 28" smaller fish. I hand fished the injured toothy and it looked like the pics you see of shark attack victims. Perfect mouth outline of the larger fish. I tried to revive the fish for 45 minutes, to no avail. The guy I was fishing with took it home to eat. I think I could really get into this... Quote
basser89 Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 Nice! That would've been an awesome site for sure! Man I gotta hit my spot sometime soon! There's always at least one monster in that area! I just have to get in there when there's not 93,000 cat fishermen lining the bank! > If they only knew what I know! LOL! Have I showed you want happens to Ledgebuster spinnerbaits when a huge musky hits one of them and wins the battle? LOL! Quote
evanj Posted July 11, 2010 Posted July 11, 2010 are you guys talking about hooking into muskies in the river?? where are those things at?! swains lock and pennyfield lock have been pretty good for me. i like the wading that can be done there. 17 incher at pennyfield a couple days ago, even bigger one lost at swains. today caught about 10 smallies biggest about 14 inches at swains lock. the cooler water this morning from the "cold front" we just got had them going Quote
basser89 Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 Hey evanj, I can tell you that DNR has published that the highest consentration of muskies in the Potomac river are in the washington county region. I've heard reports that they are starting to grow in numbers somewhat in the frederick county region as well. These are the pure strain muskies not tigers. DNR stopped stocking the tigers back around 2004. I have heard talk about them possibly stocking tigers again but only out in the far western region of the state. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted July 12, 2010 Super User Posted July 12, 2010 are you guys talking about hooking into muskies in the river?? where are those things at?! Just start fishing for bass on the Upper Potomac and you will eventually catch one. They will hit everything but like jerkbaits the best. Allen Quote

Super User Munkin Posted July 15, 2010 Super User Posted July 15, 2010 ive heard about muskys in the potomac never caught one have caught plenty of walleye have always wanted to hook the husky musky but never did :'( Fish that section where you mentioned about the tournaments. Both the little creek and the big creek mouths hold them. Allen Quote
Super User Munkin Posted July 20, 2010 Super User Posted July 20, 2010 where abouts is the little creek mouth at Close to the Dam. Allen Quote
