Walkingboss Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Get this one. It's a great story and no word a lie. It's even funnier following Ben's post. Here goes: Tourny on Massy today. Windy, cool water, crappy day for me and my partner. We really got our butts handed to use today, but the strangest thing happened. First let me say that my partner dredged up a rod and reel a few days ago at our local lunker pond. It was near new....even had the stickers still on it. He cleaned it and and actually used it today. That being said he and I were fishing some questionable water (usually marked out of bounds, but the buoys were in a different spot than usual) and another boat came near and began to fish. We could overhear them saying that we were out of bounds, but never directly approached us about it. My partner set the hook hard and I grabbed the net, but alas, it was a rod and reel..........here's where it gets really strange.....The other boat asks if we just caught a fish and we say "no, just a rod and reel!" They laugh and ask if it happens to be a Daiwa baitcaster on a blue Quantum 6'6" rod w/ a gold "silver" buddy on it........the answer was YES! :-? My partner caught a rod and reel that belonged to the owner of the only boat in site. ;D He'd lost it in early November last year!!! Â This on a lake that gets 1000's of boats a year and must have had nearly 100 boats on it today (46 from our tourny alone). I'd say the odds on that are fairly high. Guy gave my buddy $10 for coffe and thanked him deeply. At least we caught something today..... Quote
telecaster Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Do me a favor bring your friend over to Powwow and see if he can catch my spinning set-up I launched out of a canoe.Speakin of Powwow I caught a couple of nice fish there yesterday bank fishin near the culverts.probably close to 3pounders. Quote
llPa1nll Posted May 7, 2007 Author Posted May 7, 2007 hello everyone, went fishing yesterday in milton, northeast pond. only caught 2 pickeral, still no bass, caught both picks on 5/8 jitterbug, alot of traffic on lake, tournament today, also really windy yesterday, i threw out my anchor to slow me down a little, it didnt really work , when i pulled the anchor up i noticed there was some fishing line wrapped around  the rope along with a very old rod and reel with a mepps2 lure still attached, the rod was a 6' shakespere with a shakespere longcast reel,.. wish i caught a nice bass instead. Ben Try using a spinner bait, rattle trap, or a jerk bait on that wind blown bank. I think you will have more luck with that than your jitter bug this time of year. It sounds like it was some tough conditions out on the lakes this weekend. It wasnt that warm out well hey Im jealous I got to do yardwork then go to a Open House party. Next weekend is mothers day so that kills next weekend too. I might try to go out after work and do some damage across the state boarder into Mass. Quote

I think I might have fished the Wilton reservoir. I forget what the water was like though, is it a little stained like a whiskey/ice tea color or pretty clear? If it has a tinge of color to it I fish an all white or a chartreuse and white spinnerbait, if the water is pretty clear I'll go with a silver and black/ shad color or a gold and black/shad color spinnerbait. Dont overlook using jerk baits or rattle traps either. Hope this helps good luck and tight lines... Quote
baboosicbass08 Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 what do u guys recommend for big bass, because i've been fishing baboosic but just catching sunfish but theres a certain cove there where when i catch the sunfish and begin reeling in theres always a huge bass that goes for them when i reel them in, but i can never get him to bite on anything but my fish i reel in,lol, this happened before when i got the bass in my pic, but i can't remember for the life of me what i got him on cause i was using everything to get that fish. I saw signs of beds but no fish on them, I think they were just fanning. I pulled a few LMs off of some shallow docks and one 3lb SM cruising a shallow flat. All the fish came on soft plastics texas rigged with a 1/8oz weight. I also this week fished Mass water for the first time. I fished Flints pond in Tyngsboro. I had a decent one on but didnt get a good hookset on him, he ended up coming unbuttoned at the boat. This was an after work trip in my friends boat. I ended up getting some on jigs and a floating jerkbait. The Crappie were hiting the Floating Jerkbait as well which was kinda cool because I dont get to see much of them were I fish unless I get them in Canobie. Well keep up the good work guys, how is everyone else doing? Quote
baboosicbass08 Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 excellent bassmaster thats a big fish. so pain you said you were catching fish on plastics so do you think i could start catching them on lizards carolina rigged? i haven't bass fished in a while cause i kept getting skunked so i've been heavily trout fishing the souhegan in wilton, but if i can get them on the carolina then its back to bass. hey nh guys today i went fishing on lond pond in danville and did great. wagn Posted May 12, 2007 Posted May 12, 2007 went out today on turkey pond in concord and couldn't buy a bite, no matter what i tried. Oh well. Hopefully i'll do better tomorrow. Anyone ever go fishing on a tuesday or wed and need a fishing partner? I have those days off during the week and am always looking for someone to fish with. None of my friends fish and am looking to get out with some new people to learn some new techniques. Quote
Walkingboss Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 Howdy all, just checking in.... Fishin's killer for the most part. Â I've been all over the place lately, but small ponds are HOT. Â My local hole was out of control Friday morning. Â Caught 7 over 4 lbs., one over 6, and dozens, and I mean dozens of 1 1/2-2 pounders. Â Nearly all on Spro Bronze Eye frogs. Â No pads out yet, but the frogs are there and the bass are feasting. Â Cloud cover and rain let me chuck the frog all morning. Â Both blue/black and white chatterbaits did well too, but the frog caught all the pigs. Â I was certain that the spawn was going to start this weekend, but this little cool spell may push it back a bit. Â I'd say by next weekend you'll see some eggs dropping, but I'm pretty sure the lot will wait for the full moon at the end of the month. Â Water temps are in the mid to upper 60's most everywhere and I've even seen water as warm as 73. Â Won't be long. Here's my unofficial local report.....Phillips pond was very good to me this week, as was my 'secret' pond and Kingston Lake. Â Massy was tough last Sunday, but still produced and should only be getting better. Â Big Island was so-so this afternoon. Â Not a lot of fish, but I caught 3 in 2 1/2 hours, all over 2lbs., the biggest 3-9. Â Tight to cover, shallow, but best fish had 8-10 feet of water within reach. Â They're not committed to the shallows yet. The middle of this week on looks great with some showers and warm temps. Â Let's go get 'em. 8-) Quote
telecaster Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 I still cant get my little boat in the water, cuz of recent surgery but I've been having pretty good luck bank beatin the local ponds. Except for Massy, I went there a couple days ago and fished the east side of the lake by the rocks, down by the boat ramp, and around the coner. I caught two pickeral thats it, I could see fish but they weren't having any part of what I was offering : Quote

Hey baboosicbass08, spawning coves are generally shallow protected flats with access to deeper water. Like a protected cove or a tributary. Bass will spawn just about anywhere as long as its shallow and they have something to spawn their eggs on or in or near. Florida bass will spawn on the roots of lily pads. In my home lake they spawn in areas with sandy/pea gravel bottoms. Â In Canobie they do the same but also some might spawn near boulders. I would suggest that lizard or a creature type bait and throw it short and shallow at any shallow targets especially wood/docks. As for me I was at my small lil pond where I caught my PB last night for about 40 mins. I caught 3 off the bank/bridge and had another on but he came off close to shore. All were about a pound maybe pound and a half. I caught all of them on a chatterbait between 8:10-8:50pm last night. I needed a fix before I had to go to work today. I even took the boat out and brought it down and vaccumed it and washed. I need a fix bad to get out on the water again. Quote

wagn Posted May 15, 2007 Posted May 15, 2007 was out sunday on Bow lake for a tournament and didn't do so good. I saw over 100 bass cruising or schooling in the shallow flats but couldn't get them to bite a thing, and I mean I threw everything I had at them. In the whole day my partner only caught 2 at about 2 pounds each and I lost one that was about 4 pounds when he broke my line at the boat  :'(. Turns out that everyone else who did well in the club was fishing jerkbaits and caught some decent smallies. I think jerk baits were the only lure i didn't think to try. oh well, there's always next time right? I've never seen so many bass in my life and been unable to catch one. Quote

I know there are good fish in that lake but dear lord I have easily had my worst days on that lake. The day I went out I almost caught a 11inch bass at the ramp. I should have tried harder for that one. The rest of the day proved to be no easy task 6hrs later I caught nothing and came off the lake scratching my head like what just happened? Quote
Walkingboss Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 Back to defend Bow and give some help on what/where has been working for me.... First, Bow lake can be brutal, but once you've figured it out, the fishing can be outstanding. Â This time of year the smallies are in two spots. Â The far side of the islands (from the ramp) drop quickly into 35-60+ feet of water and the smallies stack up there in cooler weather/water. Â Silver buddies are the ticket there still. Â Don't pay attention to the water temp. Â Your brain tells you to fish the flats, but this spot holds pigs year-round. Â The other spot, ironically, is a huge flat that begins as a sand bar and continues for several hundred yards, ending at a shoal conecting the shoreline with an island. Â This spot is as far opposite from the ramp as can be. Â There is a large island in the NW part of the lake. Â Go east from there and you'll find the sand bar. Â The flat continues eastward. Â Don't overlook the 3 main inlet coves either. Â Larries like it there. As far as this Spring, it's not been my best either, but I have had some great days and a few great fish. Â Jigs (w/spider grub trailers) have produced my best fish in general. Â Black/blue has worked so far. Â Chatterbaits have been a consistant choice. Â Black/blue or white, depending on the sky. Â Jerkbaits for sure. Â Gold has outperformed silver. Â Silver buddies rule the Spring. Â If you aren't comfy w/bottom bumping them, simply jig them off the bottom right under the boat. Â Don't be afraid to us them in DEEP water, even now. Â I jigged up a 4 1/2 lb. smally just last week in 40 feet of water at the foot of a steep break. Â And finally, scum frogs, particularly the Spro Bronzeye frog. Â I've only had 2 good frog days this Spring, but how good they were! Â Nothing beats topwater fishing when it's on. Â Look for a warm spell before you pull them out. Â Since it's cooled a bit, they've not worked nearly as well. Â Good fishin' to y'all. Quote
wagn Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 thanks for the help. If i get out to bow again soon, i'll try doing some more deep water fishing. I was on the flat you talked about for awhile, and there were plenty of fish there, but getting them to bite was a different matter. Â Quote
