wagn Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 Thanks guys. It really was the best day I've ever had on the water I think. I've caught some big fish before including another 7lb 1oz fish, but every other time I've caught fish over 5 lbs it feels like I struggle the rest of the day. This was the first day where I was catching fish all day and every once and awhile I'd stick a monster. I hope everyone else has good luck this weekend as well Quote
jaystraw Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 I did a little research and found the creek chub and I definitley thought that's what it was. But i noticed the creek chub has rounded fins, whereas the fins on this fish are more pointed. But it is definitley a sucker. The weird thing is, I caught this fish on a jig and it litterally took the bait as soon as it broke the surface. These are some pics of creek chubs I found online, to me they look different. yeah, I did not notice the rounded mouth in the first shot. It's a sucker for sure. Quote
rippin_lips Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 I fished Lake Umbagog with 2 friends Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. We caught a total of 55 fish. Almost all were smallmouths and the biggest were just under 3 pounds. We caught most of the fish on soft plastics including senkos, grubs, fat ika, etc. We also saw a moose swiming in the water about 75 feet off shore. Overall we had a great time and caught some nice fish. Quote
NH_Bass_Tard Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 I have yet to have a day where I've caught more than 8 bass in all my years of fishing up north. I've caught double digits in florida, they seem easier to catch down there. Quote
unhbass37 Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 55 WOW. Didn't have any beers out there did you? LOL Quote
kayakbill Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 Isn't it catch and Immediate release until the 15th Quote
unhbass37 Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 I release all my bass. I hope you all do the same. Quote
kayakbill Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 Well the guys got five fish there, they were not let go right away Quote
wagn Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 The New hampshire Fishing guide says catch and release from May 15th-June 15th. It doesn't say that they have to be released right away. All fish were weighed and put right back in the water. If I am reading the rules incorrectly please let me know. Quote
kayakbill Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 The New hampshire Fishing guide says catch and release from May 15th-June 15th. It doesn't say that they have to be released right away. All fish were weighed and put right back in the water. If I am reading the rules incorrectly please let me know. That is the letter of the law not the spirit. Look I'm not trying to be a jerk but chances are those fish were spawning or on beds. How long were they in your live well?Do you really think they went back to there beds. also I am pretty sure a fish cop would have busted you. Just sayin is all : Quote
jaystraw Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 Oh boy, I'm getting my popcorn now for this discussion. ;D I'm on the fence about this one. The law does say catch and release/no live bait thru June 15th. I doubt a fish and game warder would/could have busted wagn for not "immediately" releasing the fish. The law is just not that clear that I can tell. But, I agree these fish could and were probably spawning at that time. I also doubt they will go back to the specific beds if taken away a goodly distance from them and kept in the livewell for a while. But, I'm also not sure that its a huge deal. They will probably all still spawn, maybe just somewhere else. The females can spawn multiple times over the spawning season, so its not the end of the line. Quote
wagn Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 I really don't feel like arguing over a forum. If I didn't break the law then it really isn't anyone else's concern. This thread has been a place to share fish pics and discuss techniques for over 50 pages. I think we should just leave it at that. Quote
NHfroggin Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 If you read the Law it says nothing about a length of time to release the fish. As long as the fish make it safely back into the water, i don't see the problem. I agree with Wagn lets talk about what people have been talking about for the last 800+ posts how to catch bass in NH, what lures are working, and sharing pics, no need for the negativity. oh and btw those are some nice fish, good job Wagn!! jaystraw Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 well, there's also tourneys during 5/15-6/15 and I assume those guys keep thier fish in the livewell. The schedule is up on the fish and game website, so it must be fine as long as they get back in the water. now to get this thread back on track, I've been too busy fishing smallmouth to post any of my own pics in a while. Here's a 3lb 1oz smallie from Nubanusit Quote
unhbass37 Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 I agree also get the thread back on track. Jaystraw nice smallie. I still need to get to a lake that has smallmouth in there. Quote
wagn Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Nice fish Jay. For the smallies have you been having more luck on hardbaits like Jerks or cranks in the last week or plastics? I've been catching a ton of bass on jerkbaits, but the smallies have only seemed to hit plastics for me Quote
jaystraw Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 wagn, I had luck with grubs and jerkbaits early in the season, but once spawn hit I've been just killing it with plastics and spinners. Now that spawn is past in a couple of the smallmouth places I fish, they seem to have gone back to jerkbaits and still are hitting spinners, but not plastics as much unless I find one still spawning. unhbass, I'm not sure where you live, but most of the good smallie places I know about are in the Hillsborough/Sutton/Newbury area or up north. Gregg Lake in Antrim is a good one as well as Nubanusit and Spoonwood in Hancock. There are a ton more, but those are an excedllent start. I just had a 30+ smallie day at Nubanusit(guessing, I do not count my fish once I catch more than a few), with a couple giants like the one above. But, they were spawning and that made it easy to find them. Quote
unhbass37 Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Thanks Jay. I live in Nashua, I will check them out for sure. Quote
