How would a Jon boat do on Lake Chauncy and A1?

It would be perfect for A1.  Not familiar with Chauncy.

Oars or trolling motor for A1.  You'll need to pay attention in the west section of the pond and the south portion of the section with the dam and the ramp.

There are a lot of stumps just below the water line.

If the water is clear you can see and avoid them.  It was crystal clear when I fished it last year.

I don't know of any place they would be bad, provided you pay attention to the weather.

I've fished a jon boat in Cape Cod Bay. I was younger then, and do not recommend such an activity. The wind can come up suddenly, and you'd be in trouble.

I would avoid large open stretches of water, but would not hesitate to fish in sheltered coves or the shorelines from which the wind is blowing.

They are at their best when you want to fish from shallow waters or need to navigate shallow water.

Lake Whitehall is only a short distance from A1, and is fine for a jon boat. Lake Cochituate along route 9 in Framingham/Natick is another place that has plenty of sheltered areas with no large open expanses that you need to traverse to get around.

It depends on your experience and the size of your jon boat.

Thinking of getting either a 12 or 14' Jon boat. Hoping its the right choice.

Chauncy is one of my favorite places. You will be okay in a jon in anything less then 20mph. For such a small lake it will get very choppy in a stiff wind.

Fish along the west shore all the way to the north/northwest shore..there are some nice drops for jigs and some shallow areas where topwaters work great. It's one of my most productive topwater lake.

You can't go wrong with either.  For the dollar, jons give you more room than anything else because of their rectangular shape.

The downside is that they really pound going into a chop.

If you can, opt for a welded model.  It will take much more abuse and maintain its integrity.  Riveted models do not stand up well to pounding around in choppy water.

It's a case of you get what you pay for.

My old jon was a Sears and the seats and bracing were riveted in place.  It lasted several years, but a welded version would still be servicable today.

Certainly, Chauncy would be fine as well as A-1 or as we call it "the bomb site" or stump pond. Lake Whitehall also, Hopk Res on 85, (electric only) . Subury River in Framingham, some parts of the Charles, in the Wellseley, Medway area. Lots of different choices. Jeff
