The Erie Canal has a wide variety of species and good numbers as well. Species include both LM and SM bass, walleye and pike, as well as channel cats, suckers, sheepshead, carp and others.

However, it's not consistent for the whole canal. For example, the two spots I successfully fished for years have gone virtually dead, yet other areas are productive.

All I can say is to try it near your school and see how that section does.

Good luck!!

Ok, Right now its drained and it looks good, deep with rocks all along the side as well as there is a few streams that come into it. So ill give it a shot

The Erie Canal is alright, you're never going to get awesome fishing out of it unless you're on a part connected to a bigger water.  I used to go to SUNY Brockport, and I'd fish the Erie canal between classes, caught some decent smallies outta it on Yum Dingers

I am at SUNY brockport so if you said you caught some smallies there then i will go. I am glad to see someone that had caught fish there,

I could probably help but I fish it down here in North Tonawanda where the canal opens up into the Niagara River. If you are willing to make it down in these parts I could tell you almost everything you need to know about fishing this section.

As far as where you fish it try jigs, I use jigs everywhere no matter what time of the year and hook up with Large and smallmouth.

Alright today i went and walked around in the canal (because its drained). Looks very promising, steep edges rocks, dead crawfish, found a couple lures  :D, so this will make my spring a little better here at school.

Those wall-to-wall rocks ate plenty of my jigs and crankbaits in my canal heyday at Locks 32 and 33. The fishing was good all year, but disproportionately good right after the canal was filled. However, I've never fished or even seen the section of the canal where you are.

Yo dude, if you're at Bport, then I know a spot you might wanna try.  If you're on the canal, get on the opposite side from the school where the path is, go on that, in the direction of redman road, (west i think) and go past that redman rd bridge for a little while.  There will be a little path into the woods and back there is a little pond.  I saw it there when I went for a run once, but I didnt fish it.  There were a whole bunch of keeper size largemouths and a couple big ones.  IDK if that's private property or not (must be if someone stocked the pond) but I didn't see anyone around.  If you get to a boat launch on the canal, you've gone too far.  It's pretty far but there were some nice LM's in there for ya....

Sweet once the weather warms a bit ill run that way and look for it. Thanks for the tip!

I went walking again down the canal and i think i found that pond...i found a pond atleast lol along a path. It was really small maybe like 30-40 yards across but it was on like a gravel roadish
