BASS fisherman Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 I caught 47 today at a local pond What in the heck are you throwing where your catching 47 fish? How long were you fishing for too? And.....do you mind sharing the name of this "local pond"? I don't know man, it sounds like I might have to get the waders out. Quote
Bassnbrett101 Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 lol i went for two hours after work and another hour after the club meeting to trauger, its a pond maintained by trout fisherman who stock it once yearly for trout. Other than the first couple weekends of trout season I pretty much have the lake to myself. The lake is filled with weedbeds, literally the whole thing is weeds besides in early spring where you can actually fish the wood in prespawn. The majority of the fish in the lake are from 12-14 inches and I know for a fact theres atleast two seperate 6-8lbers in there and I know I've caught a couple 4 lbers. Rarely you catch a fish over 14 inches though. But anyway I caught 31 in those two hours with a wacky worm and chartuese spinnerbait and I went back for an hour later after the club meeting with just the same spinnerbait and caught 16 more. Quote
BASS fisherman Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 How long would it take to get from Keystone State park to that lake? I see they're both just off of 981. Quote
Bassnbrett101 Posted May 21, 2008 Posted May 21, 2008 If you go straight on 981 about thirty to forty minutes, if you want to go sometime just send me a pm and I'll meet you in latrobe somewhere Quote
plnoldrick Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 Hit wilhelm yesterday for a couple hours till the self imposed gale force winds warning went out. water was muddy but burning BIG white spinnerbaits with BIG willows was the only thing needed. Fish were really aggressive. Quote
BASS fisherman Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 If you go straight on 981 about thirty to forty minutes, if you want to go sometime just send me a pm and I'll meet you in latrobe somewhere Do you beat the bank, or take your boat out? Quote
Bassnbrett101 Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 lol its small enough to almost cast across, I just walk along the bank. It's just a few acre pond is all. Same with a few others I fish like the one in lago de vida and my buddies pond. Basically most of the fish I catch are within ten feet of the bank and the bank is almost 80% accessible so walking the bank really isn't a problem. It just makes for a fun afternoon Quote
BASS fisherman Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 How far away from Keystone state park do you live? Quote
Bassnbrett101 Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 About 20 mins. I don't fish there unless its bass meeting night though. We have our meetings in the visitor center at 6:30 Quote
Lard_Bass Posted May 23, 2008 Author Posted May 23, 2008 I was catching up on some old BASS Master reading and saw last month's issue had a nice little write up on Shenango Lake. I have never fished it but the article said it had a lot of nice structure. Quote
Bassnbrett101 Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 lol has anyone on here ever fished shenango? Its really hard to find the fish there, atleast it is for me. Anybody do any good there? Quote
Pittsburgh Reeler Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 they sell a hot spots map for shenango. Quote
Lucky Craft Man Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 Today was the first time that I was ever on Lake Wilhelm. We fished hard today and only manged 3 LM Bass between the two of us. I heard this was a good bass lake, but I found it to be a tough place to fish. I was just wondering if others find it challenging or is it more of the fact that I don't know the lake very well (and need to learn it). Share your opinion of Wilhelm with me if you don't mind. Quote
RobbyZ5001 Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 Wilhelm is an awesome lake. That lake has some absolute hogs in it. They may be post spawn right now. I was there a few weeks ago, and they were spawning and post spawn. You should catch them all over... nowhere special. Quote
bassnleo Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 I fished Wilhelm yesterday.....My first fish of the morning was a 6.5 lb largie.....caught several more in the 3 lb range. The fish are DEFINATELY post spawn right now. All the fish I caught had tails that looked beat up and battered. Wilhelm is a fickle lake. Once you learn it you'll really like it. It has lots of big bass, maybe the biggest in this half of the state. I've seen fish up to and over 8 lbs come out of it. Fergies bait shop (which is just down the road) has a pic of a bass that says it's 10.3 lbs and came out of the lake. Other than Presque Isle and Lake Erie, Wilhelm is probably my favorite lake. My one piece of advice for Wilhelm: Get off the bank Quote
xhogger1 Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Just found this site , I'm from Cabot,Pa. Just south of Butler. I have fished Presque Isle the Last two weekends , my dad and I caught 140 smallmouth last weekend and 95 this saturday and another 30+ in a few hrs sunday morning. Hope to get back up this weekend. ;D Quote
bassnleo Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Hit Wilhelm again this morning, helping a friend pre-fish for a club tourny this weekend. Man, we absolutely WHACKED 'em! I'm really not sure how many fish we caught, if I had to venture a guess it would be 30+ between the 2 of us. As far as bigguns, I had a rocky day. I had 4 fish in the 4-5 lb range jump off, 2 at the boat and 2 on their first jump after hooking them. What a stringer I would have had with those 4 in the boat. I love that lake Quote

I love that lake Man, how on earth do you fish that lake? I'm not asking for any secret spots, but I couldn't figure those fish out. I spent a lot of time in the 4 to 5 feet flats and then moved to the drop offs from these flats. No great success. Admittingly, I suck with a jig, but I was forcing myself to use one down the slope or these drop offs. Also, what do you throw to cope with the crappy water clarity? Again, I am not asking for any secret location, I just am looking for some help to unlock that lake. PS Congratulations on your good day. Quote

xhogger1 Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 We caught 80% on 3" white twist tails with 1/8 oz. jig heads. The other 20% on watermellon tubes and grubs. We caught 300 smallies the last two weekends , couldn't make it this weekend. May try out my new motor at either Moraine or Crooked Creek Sunday. Quote
BASS fisherman Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 This thread has been moved along and just about forgotten about, so I decided to bump it back. I was out today and hit a few ponds just to check out what the water is looking like. Burrel park pond is frozen except around the aerators. No possibility of fishing:( I also went by the pond in the murrysville business park and it too is completely frozen. Big surprise I drove down to the Allegheny river and hit lock 5 for about an hour. Not one bite! But I did catch a stick and lost a couple lures!!! Quote
Gantu Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Well, here's my first report. I went to Peters Lake and found ICE! Argh!!! The whole lake was still frozen over. As I was staring at the lake, someone walked by and told me that Canonsburg was completely thawed (suprising since it's only a .5 mile away but has a lot less shade too).I ventured over to Canonsburg lake and saw a lot of people fishing. I am not a big fan of this lake but decided to spend the time talking to a couple of guys. They were catching trout which surprised me because I thought trout fishing didn't start until April 14th. Also, I thought any trout protected lakes were off limits to fishing. Any PA residents can clarify this for me? I believe the extended season for bass is Catch and Release right now (which is all I do anyways). There are regs that say that trout can be caught and release up to Apr 1st in Big Bass lakes. They also say C&R only from April to June for bass. Quote
BASS fisherman Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Hit a few spots today to check the conditions. Northmoreland-lower lake was about 80% frozen. The shallows on the Western side of the lake are thawed. Upper Northmoreland lake was 60% frozen, again the shallows were thawed. Lower Burrell park pond was 60% frozen as well. The ledges on the Northwest side of the lake are accesable as is the brushpile in that area. The Allegheny river is running high, fast, muddy, and icy. Fishing on the river is way to dangerous to even attempt. The ice is moving big time. I fished Burrell pond for a bit with nada. Another fisherman had caught a small crappie on a tiny black grub. Is it spring yet? Quote
BassinBoy Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Just checkin in ;D I'm in the North of Pittsburgh area, and fish a lot of lakes around here Quote
