Bassnbrett101 Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 crooked creek should be a better lake for this time of year. That cold snap last weekend just ruined the fishing in my opinion. Even the fish in my ponds were acting all retarded like they didnt know what to do. I'm sorry the loyalhanna tourny didnt go so well for you two. I'm sure you'll do better next time Quote
HPBB Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 bassfisherman I know your pain, can you High speed all day and not knowing how to fish high speed. CC will be better. I'll be there for that one. I might be a rider, if there isn't any free spots I'll be bringing a boat. Quote
BASS fisherman Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 CC should be a good tournament. Glad to hear you'll be there Jim. The thing that really bit my butt was that due to FN's boat not having much room for all my rods, I ended up leaving 3 in my car for the day. I really could have used those rods too. Oh well, all I can do is live and learn. Quote
red team rn Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Has anyone been to Keystone PD? I am ;planning on going there tomorrow to see how awake the smallies are. Ihope all the ice is gone. Quote
Bassnbrett101 Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 I'v never fished Keystone power dam but i heard its a great lake. Is it primarily smallmouth fishing? Quote
red team rn Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 In the spring and early summer it is my favorite lake in Pa., other than Erie I can"t beleive that you Live in Gbg. and belong to Loyalhanna and have never fished the power dam. I live in Latrobe and used to belong to your club. The power dam also has a nice population of largemouths with good size. Quote
Bassnbrett101 Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 lol i know, i want to get out there but I always find myself going to loyalhanna or the rivers. My buddy has a johnboat though and we might make a trip down there this summer. Quote
Don B Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 There are hp restrictions on KPD, and it's a little out of the way for a lot of folks, and pretty much out in the middle of nowhere. I've caught a few different types of fish there: perch, walleye, largemouth, and seen a guy catch a tiger muskellunge. They have stocked quite a few different species there including those 4, and a few others. I've never caught a smallmouth there though. Amish guys fish there too, in wooden rowboats, without any fishing licenses, and I seen them keep every fish they catch for eating, no matter what size or species. Last time I was there, I seen two of them keep about 20 small largemouths, and about a dozen panfish for the frying pan. Quote
Bassnbrett101 Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 wow, yeah i severely dislike meat hunters like that. I know they have as much right to water as we do, its just disappointing to see that many fish gone in one day. I knew about the HP restrictions and thats why i can't take my boat there. my buddy just has a johnboat with a trolling motor, that boat fits any hp restrictions ;D Quote
red team rn Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 The fact that there is a H.P. limit and that it is out of the way,are a few of the things that make KPD great. Up until 1997 it was the heaviest stocked lake in the state, afriend of mine had a list of everything that was stocked over a ten year period. There were Lake trout, some kind of salmon, and 95,000 brook trout, channel cats,3 different kinds of musky and I don"tremember what else. In the late 90"s the walleye was pretty decent, I caught a few over 7 lbs. on downriggers. We'll not talk about the Amish, Thats a real sore subject. Quote
Lucky Craft Man Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 I'm looking for a tackle shop that is relatively local (anywhere in western PA) and stocks G Loomis Muskie and Swimbait rods. I am interested in buying a few of these, but I would hate to buy a rod without holding it first and I can't find a store anywhere that has these. Does anyone happen to know if there is such a store? Thanks in advance for your help. Quote
Lard_Bass Posted April 14, 2008 Author Posted April 14, 2008 Hey Guys, Glad to see the thread doing well. I have been on hiatus since bass season ended. I went up to Erie last weekend for some steelies but caught some nice brown trout instead. I officially put away my steelhead gear and ready to hit the bass. I have heard that Cross Creek has not been doing too well. A tourney a couple of weekends ago only netted one fish according to a buddy of mine. Any other reports out there would be appreciated. Thanks. -LB Quote
Pittsburgh Reeler Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 Lucky Craft- I have seen a few G. Loomis rods up at Sportsman's Warehouse up on Mt. Nebo point. It is a great store, they have some items not found elsewhere (a few Lake Fork Lures, for example). Some items seem cheaper, some not, so that is spotty. I'm not sure they have the model you are looking for, but its the only store I've seen that has 'em. What about Cabela's? That's not too too far, you could probably round up some friends and make a half a day out of it, anyway. At least they alway have a bunch of other stuff on sale to make it worthy of the gas $$. HPBB Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 relply to luckycraftman. go down to Tackel Unlimited on Rt 51S In large Pa. just before the mon river. they have G loom there and can order anything. also great shop to repair reels Quote
Lucky Craft Man Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 Thanks guys for the response. Pittsburgh Reeler, I have tried Sportsman's Warehouse (on Mt. Nebo Pt.) and Cabelas (In Wheeling, WV and Hamburg, PA) and they do have a lot of G Loomis rods, but they don't carry the Swimbait or Muskie line in the store. They could order them for me, but I would hate to have them go through the trouble of ordering a rod that I end up not liking or buying when it arrived. HPBB, I have also tried Tackle Unlimited on Rt 51. They also have some G Loomis there, but not the line of rods I was looking for. I also lost a lot of respect for that store. I went in to ask how much it would cost to have a Pflueger President reel cleaned and lubed. The guy said that spinning reels are a little more expensive and I told him I was looking at getting a Pflueger President baitcasting reel cleaned, not a spinning reel. He told me there was no such thing as a Pflueger President baitcasting reel. I told him that I indeed had one, and he said that was not possible, since they didn't exist and walked away. I was taken aback by how curt the guy was with me and I figured it was probably for the best, because I didn't want someone cleaning a reel that they didn't think existed (and I would assume they should be up on these things). I want to thank the both of you very much for your responses. I appreciate the help greatly. Quote
Bassnbrett101 Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 Lisa its good to see you back! how was ur tourny at crooked creek? Quote
topwaterbob Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 I live close to Tackle Unlimited. I bought a Kistler from them for 25% off. He no longer sells them. His gloomis choice is not very good. Most of his baits run 1 to 2 dollars more than elsewhere. You have to catch his in store sells. I've never purchased a reel from them. I do stop in once in a while and will buy a few items. I know what you mean about his attitude. The younger guys are ok though. Quote
Don B Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 LCM: You probably won't find too many places that stock bunches of muskie rods on their shelves, especially GLoomis ones, simply because they aren't the biggest movers like bass rods would be, and even the cheaper lines of muskie rods tend to be more expensive than most bass rods. I have several muskie rods that I bought without actually holding in my hand first, but I am quite happy with them. Decide what you are going to use them for, and then go by the charts. I figure that you will need at least three basic rods for muskie fishing, but you can go for a lot more than that, just like bass rods. I have several Falcon muskie rods, and some St. Croix ones, but GLoomis makes some great ones too. Here is a link to a muskie shop that has some great products, if you are interested. http://www.muskyshop.com/modules/web/index.php/id/1 Quote

I actually just received my Rollie & Helen's Musky Shop Catalog in the mail yesterday. I figure, I will just have to take a chance and order them. I'm sure I will be happy with them, but I always like to hold the rod first. This maybe a case where I just take a chance. Thanks again for the help. Quote
Pittsburgh Reeler Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 LCM- No problem, always happy to help!! Brett- I couldn't fish Crooked Creek with my comrades because I was fishing the Women's Bassmaster Tournament in Lewisville, TX. I placed 43 out of 83 co-anglers. On the first day, I did catch fish, though, and one keeper. 2nd day I got totally skunked :'( so I did not make it to the third day. But, catching one is something, I'm on the board with points. I'll hope for better weather and conditions at Lake Neely Henry next month!!! I have a tourney at Berlin this Saturday. I got totally skunked at Loyalhanna, by the way! Good luck, everyone, looks like the weather may finally be breaking- YAY! Quote
Lard_Bass Posted April 21, 2008 Author Posted April 21, 2008 Hey all, I took the kids down to Dunlap Lake this past Sunday. Fishing pressure was very high. We fished from the shore and I rigged the kids with minnows and I tried some plastics. Unfortunately, we got skunked. I only saw a couple of trout caught around me and nothing else. LCM, Call the Gander Mountain down in Washington, PA (724-229-9800) and ask for a guy named Skip. He is a big Muskie fisherman and gives lectures to local fishing clubs. He may be able to help you find a GLoomis. I know he does a lot of ordering for Gander. Last winter, I thought I saw Gander clearing out some St. Croix Legend Muskie rods that other stores typically don't carry. -LB Quote
topwaterbob Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 LCM, the manager of the West Mifflin Gan. can order anything as long as Gander MT. sells the item and if it is in the system. She told me I would have to pay shipping. Quote
Bassnbrett101 Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Pittsburgh reeler - I know I heard, I'm sorry my advice didnt work out for you. Good luck in your upcoming tournaments though! Quote
Pittsburgh Reeler Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 Thanks, man! I did pretty good in my club tournament at Berlin- 4th place!! Quote
