Crawdadmike Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Can anyone tell me some good places to fish for bass in Maryland at the end of April? I will be coming from PA. with a 14' jon boat and a 7.5 HP motor. looking for some creeks off the Potomac and some good lake fishing. MikeS Quote
basser89 Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 With the exception of the Potomac, the lakes that I fish here in MD are electric only. Black Hill regional park (Little Seneca Creek lake) just outside of Germantown, MD is tyically pretty hot that time of year. I've been fishing there since about 97 and the spawn is in full swing about the first week of May. My Potomac outings are in Washington county. You can check here: http://mddnr.chesapeakebay.net/fish/state2.html for a list of the boat ramps that are in each county. Hope this helps! Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted January 12, 2009 Super User Posted January 12, 2009 Mike, what area of Maryland will you be coming into? Preference for Largemouth or Smallmouth? Quote
Crawdadmike Posted January 12, 2009 Author Posted January 12, 2009 I will be in the Central MD area. To get to the Potomac I will use the Fort Washington Ramp. I also am going to try Rocky Gorge and Tridelphia Reserviors. Are there any other places that is recommended? Thanks, MikeS Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted January 13, 2009 Super User Posted January 13, 2009 Outside of my areas I have fished so far, unfortunately I won't be much help to you for that one. Although will be interested to hear peoples thoughts about putting in at Fort Washington for LM. I also have a 14ft jon, wondered how well it would work around that area of the Potomac, getting into larger water down there. Quote
basser89 Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Black Hill regional park (Little Seneca lake) is the furthest south I've fished in MD (I'm originally from PA myself). Black Hill is only 24 miles (east) from Tridelphia so that could be another option for you as well. Hopefully, some others can offer more suggestions. Good luck! Quote
Crawdadmike Posted January 14, 2009 Author Posted January 14, 2009 Thanks for all the input and advice. If I do go on the potomac it will be very close to shore, I'll be busting the banks so to speak, but I mainly want to hit the creeks and creekmouths. Black Hills sounds nice, I'll definately hit there. Thanks for the help. MikeS Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted January 14, 2009 Super User Posted January 14, 2009 Let me know if you decide to hit Black Hills, maybe we can meet up. I only live about 10 minutes from there. Quote
c17Lat Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 ft. washington should be good, but you might want to drive down route 210 to Slavins Ramp (no launch fee) in indian head to fish the mattawoman creek no wake zone Quote

I also have a 14ft jon, wondered how well it would work around that area of the Potomac, getting into larger water down there. I've fished piscataway creek 4 times for a total of about 6 hours...no bass at all, but my friend did catch this on a spinnerbait though lol. i think the creek is pretty much just wood cover and a lot of milfoil. i haven't seen any spadderdock or anything else. a lot of people do well there. it should be great for a jon boat Quote
Bassaholic84 Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Tridelphia is nice but the two best lakes in my opinion are Deep Creek and black hills. Black hills may be a little tougher to get a bite your first bunch of times but they have lots of large and very healthy fish in there. I mainly fish black hills and cunninham falls lake which is also has very healthy bass. And i usually just float down the potomac, but the smallies will be tearin it up here in about a month. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted January 21, 2009 Super User Posted January 21, 2009 I have never been to the cunningham falls lake, never really heard much about fishing it. What size LM's are you getting out of it? I fish Black Hills a lot, and it can be bear sometimes. But when you get one its usually a nice one.... Quote
basser89 Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Hey Brian, My best out of Cunningham Falls is is 5lbs 9oz but I've seen a couple bigger! I came across 3 the one spring sitting on beds. I'd say they were some where handy to 7lbs. Unfortunately, the guy I was fishing with (was a definite noob) wouldn't let me work them and ended up spooking them. Sadly, I never made it there last year but I'll definitely be hitting there a couple times this year, that is, unless Big Pool steals all my time! That place has me pumped for this year too! lunkerfever, Have you hit Greenbrier before? It's a decent option too! While I have landed any decent ones out of there, I've seen DNR reports of some real hogs surveyed out of there! My best out of Black Hills is the one in my avatar. She was 22" and my digital scale called it 5lbs 5oz. I wish I had taken a girth measurement on that one cause she "looks" bigger than my PB of 21 1/2" - 5lbs 12oz (the first pic in my signature). Super User BrianinMD Posted January 21, 2009 Super User Posted January 21, 2009 Man now my cabin fever is even worse, cunningham falls looks like a good place to hit with my little 14ft jon. Need to head up there a couple times this year..... Quote
dave Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 ft. washington should be good, but you might want to drive down route 210 to Slavins Ramp (no launch fee) in indian head to fish the Mattawoman creek no wake zone With that motor you should be able to go out of the Mattawoman south and go to the northern mouth of the Chicamuxen then go back into the Mattawoman, depending on the tide. Out of Ft. Washington you could stay in Piscataway creek from the southern mouth into the creek can be great in April. Quote
Bassaholic84 Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Well i have caught and seen many fish greater then 5lbs out of cunninham falls. DNR is a very big part of the lake. It gets stocked with trout and has creeks that get stocked with thousands of trout that run into it. Ive heard of 9lbs getting caught. The bass action up there is terrific when the trout get stocked. Im thinking of going up there at the end of march(when the first stocking is) and fishing with a trout swimbait and have a trout line in the water as well. The bass there are very healthy. Im not convinced its a better fishery then black hills but it is a must fish lake in MD. And its only $2 to use the boat ramp Quote

I have hit up greenbriar only from bank. I would like to take my boat up there this year. I have some buddys that live kind of near you Basser in the knoxville, boonsboro and sharpsburg area. So im out there a good bit and last year i caught a couple that had some nice bellys on them but were only 3 lbs. They were definetly healthy and im sure there are some trophys. The only problem with there is the beach part and people are always in the water so it almost pushes all the boats and fisherman to the one side of the lake so its a little crowded Quote
Crawdadmike Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 Is it true that you can only use a maximum 33lb thrust trolling motor at Cunningham Falls? I know there are no gas motors allowed but the website I looked at said no electric motor over 33 lb thrust or 1HP. Please let me know because this lake is definately on my list. And by the way, Thanks for all the responses and information. I really appreciate it. MikeS Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted January 28, 2009 Super User Posted January 28, 2009 Here is the link to the restriction, I didn't realize. Oh well guess I won't be putting my boat in there.... http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/western/CunninghamFalls.html Quote
basser89 Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Here is the link to the restriction, I didn't realize. Oh well guess I won't be putting my boat in there....http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/western/CunninghamFalls.html I know a couple of the higher up's at DNR. I'm going to check on this to clarify. That just doesn't sound right that they can limit you on the size of an electric trolling motor. I have a 43 on mine and I've seen glass bass boats on there with larger trolling motors than mine. The only thing I can think of is they are attempting to keep the electric outboards off there but that's only a guess. I'll let you know what I find out! Quote
basser89 Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Ok, here's the scoop on Cunningham! This is straight out of the email I recieved! "Sean, The regulation restricting the thrust on electric motors was changed in 2003. There is no thrust restriction on electric motors. Boats with gas motors are allowed on the lake, but may only use the electic motor. Inland Fisheries" Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted January 28, 2009 Super User Posted January 28, 2009 Thanks Sean I guess they are a little behind in updating their websites..... My new rod came in this week, the reel should be here soon. After getting a little time on the water last week I am getting even more hyped for the coming season. Quote
Crawdadmike Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 Brian & sean, Thank you for the effort on the trolling motor matter. I was shocked when I read it but now I can add it to my list of lakes to hit. I may not make it to the Potomac in April because I have at least 4 lakes I want to hit now. Thanks for all your help.
