Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted February 27, 2008 Super User Posted February 27, 2008 Hey I just got 2008 BPS Bass catalog and i wanted to know what you fellas thinkFor Me : Bps: better for baits and Cabelas, has a better selection of Rods and Reels Yup i agree Muddy Cabelas has a lot of big name reels that are CABELAS EXCLUSIVES models only they sell not even the websites of said manufacturers have them. How do they do that ??? i have about 10 C5 garcia mag reels. Garcia site dont even list any magnetic reels besides revos .Bass pro does have better lure selection though online and instore Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted February 27, 2008 Super User Posted February 27, 2008 Sorry, I don't have enough idle time on my hands to compare the two. Besides, my new Penthouse catalog arrived today. Now that is some delicious looking bait! Quote
Guest muddy Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Bet you were listening to the Rolling Stones singing YOUR JUST A MAMMARY while you were reading the articles Quote
jrhennecke Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Hey I just got 2008 BPS Bass catalog and i wanted to know what you fellas thinkFor Me : Bps: better for baits and Cabelas, has a better selection of Rods and Reels For the most part I think BPS is more geared to the fisherman while Cabelas is more geared to the hunter. I shop from both. Quote
Guest muddy Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 I would say that Cabelas fishing dept. is more multi species than Bass Pro, but hey BASS is Basspro's main business. You are corect about thier hunting you should see the trophy mounts and the gun selection at their Hamburg PA store WOW!!!!!!!! Quote
Ryzies Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 i like the bps catalog better but i don't like that bps uses usps as shipping alot of the time... Quote
tfisherman Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 I like BPS for fishing, but I can tell you their search engine SUCKS!!!!! I typed in the exact name of a product one day and it wouldn't come up so I called the 800 number. The lady asked what the catalog number was and I told her I didn't have one on me, she spent 15 minutes thumbing through old catalogs until she found what I was talking about. She gave me the number and it came up, the funny thing is that the name of the product was exactly what I had typed in?? I asked her about that and she said she didn't know why it did that. I told her it's happened a lot and she said you know people tell me that all the time! I asked why they wouldn't take the time to make a better search engine it's the life blood on the on-line business and she was like OH WELL you gonn'a place you're order or what?! So needless to say Cabela's got my business that day!!! > Quote
BUCKEYEone Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 agreed BPS is better for bass fishing, where cabelas is more geared to overall "outdoors" I shop from both, though! Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted February 27, 2008 Super User Posted February 27, 2008 Hey I just got 2008 BPS Bass catalog and i wanted to know what you fellas thinkFor Me : Bps: better for baits and Cabelas, has a better selection of Rods and Reels I agree. Quote
fishizzle Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Agreed that BPS has better lures--That was their origional business The stores are the same way Cabelas has 8' of spinnerbaits and BPS has a whole isle. Prices are about the same though Quote

Super User RoLo Posted February 27, 2008 Super User Posted February 27, 2008 Muddy, I was an avid hunter in New Jersey and a frequent flyer at Cabelas. Today I rarely hunt anymore, so it's all about fishing. As a result, I've all but fired Cabelas, and it's due to their limited fishing inventory. I'm a One-Stop shopper, and that's not possible at Cabelas. I can get everything I need from BPS and TWH (rod & reels at Reeds). So, if I'm not in the market for Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft I have no further use for Cabelas ;D Roger Quote
Pond Hopper Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 I will not shop via catalog with BPS anymore so I do not even look at their catalog when it comes, that said Cabela's has always done me right. Quote
Joel W Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Out of the two, I find the BPS more geared towards us Freshwater fisherman, although I make purchases from both companies. 95% of the time I make those purchases after doing searches on their web sites. Their catalogs do make great reading material while in the executive lounge. Unfortunately, both send way too many catalogs. One Master Catalog from each would be fine for the whole fishing season. Chode2235 Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 I think it is a little different. I think Cabelas is more geared toward the Northern/Midwest angler, where Bass Pro is more geared toward the Southern angler. I find more stuff in Cabelas that I like, of course I am fishing the 10,000 lakes of MN and not the big reservoirs of the South. We have very different needs and fishing styles. Not that different enough, but we do have niche needs which Cabelas fills better. For instance people were/are screaming that our beloved Lindy tackle company was bought by Spro. Quote
GobbleDog Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 In Orlando there's a Bass Pro Shop Outdoor World.... they have every lure and reel under the sun. BUT, they have the worst rod selection I've ever seen. I don't know if their catalog is any better, but it couldn't be any worse. Quote

I did make the trip to the Cabelas in Reno thinking it was going to be something special. I found that the store caters more to the hunter than for fisherman. It was ok but my local Walmart has a better fishing section. Quote

Joel W Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Just got my 3rd catolog from both of them yesterday. BPS sent their Bass Book, and Cabelas sent me their boating and Marine catolog. Quote
SWIFF Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 Back to RoLo's post about Yo-Zuri Ultra soft line....I even called BPS and told them to start carrying it as well as regular...FAgedabodit! They got their heads in a dark stinky place unless its Strike King stuff. > Quote
heathen Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I personally dont use either to purchase from, but I do get there catalogs to look at stuff and help ease the winter pain of Cabin Fever. Quote
SV1000 Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I just ordered almost every fishing, boating and ATV catalog available from BP, Cabela's and a few bait company's. I am an internet junky and use it as much as possible to research, purchase etc. But since I don't have a laptop I need to restock the library for the fishing season ;D I ordered Cabela's a few days ago and received the Master Fishing, Flyfishing and Saltwater cataloges yesterday. I am not devoted to any store, local or not and will mailorder as much as possible to save money. As an example, neither Gander Mountain or Academy have Sufix Braid locally so I ordered it from Cabela's this week. Quote

I was thinking the same thing, what's funny is my wife has ordered from there and they will send both of us issues. That let me know that they have way to much money. So BPS, please send cash not extra mags. Quote
