Black Hill Park/ Little Seneca Lake- Boyds, MD

I want to try Little Seneca Lake in Boyds, MD ...seems nice, anyone been there? Anyone need a partner near Frederick?

Welcome to the boards Dan!

I work in Germantown so I am lucky enough to be able to fish Little Seneca (aka Black Hills) at lunch time. I do make it down on the weekend on occassion but I haven't had a chance to fish there in almost two weeks now (truck problems). By now, the spawn should be over (at least for the majority of the bass). Last report I heard, the tiger muskies have been real active as well. If you have any questions, let me know.

Thanks for the welcome Basser89, have you ever had any luck there? Any better spots out this way?

The bass in my avatar and the one on the right in my signature are my two biggest out of Black Hills (both are 5lbs plus). Closer to Frederick, I'd say the better spots that I've found are the pond in Woodsboro, MIddletown pond, Cunningham Falls and Greenbrier. In the winter, I usually hit the warm water discharge area at PEPCO. Hope this helps!

There is always the potomac since you are in Frederick. I work with Basser89 and we have done quite well in the rivers around Frederick, Washington county depending on what you are looking for.

That place is either feast or famine! I fish there several times a year.

It is a very nice fishery holding many large fish.  It is hit hard on the weekends so if you do go, id go early.  It is probally one of the more pressured lakes in the area.

Blackhills is pretty nice with some horses in there.  The muskie that they stocked it with to control the crappie are now a bit out of control though.  Either way it's a smaller lake and pretty good.

If you can find someone in the area with a reservoir rig hit Liberty or make the trip to Loch Raven.

Liberty is nice and HUGE.  Loch Raven I swear will rival ANY bass fishery in Maryland.  The amount of fish you can pull in one day and the the fact that those fish are that incredibly healthy is just amazing.  Just throw green...whatever you throw make sure it's green.

Also you can rent a boat at Loch Raven with a Minn Kota and batteries for about $30 that will get you anywhere on that lake you need to go, slow but it will get you there.

Hey Fish MD,

Just curious how the muskies in Black Hills can be out of control? DNR had only stocked tiger muskies which are sterile and (to the best of my knowledge) they haven't stocked any for the past two years. While I've seen one or two there this year, I haven't had one on in two years. What section of the lake are you seeing them?

Thanks for the great info. guys, I'll have to try to find some of those places, I'm new to the area, I don't have a fish preference really, just like to fish for fun and throw em back, but I do need a boat rental lake, that's critical...

I was also wondering where's the closest access point to the Potomac from my area?

And what other species are in Black Hills besides bass, blue gill, etc?

I have fished Black Hills for the last 2 years, until this year I never had a muskie on. This year I have caught one, and had another swipe at a crappie I was reeling in. Not sure if getting away from bank fishing has changed these chances but I haven't seen any muskie other then these two. I have done pretty well on crappie the last 2 times out, bass on the other hand I would rather not talk about......
