Had another decent day, but my buddy Matt did most of the catching today. Fished from 6:30 AM to 1:30.Water temp started @ 50 and rose to 54.8.. Air temp was 45 on arrival and 50 on departure. Winds were at a constant 15mph w/gusts of 25. Most of the day we fished in 3' to 4' of water with an occassional trip to 6'. All fish were caught in emerging weeds and grass. I7:02 AM 6.3lb Pike in 3' of water, caught on Pumkinseed brush hog pegged w/1/4oz bullett.

7:10 3.8lb LM in 2', on a Mann's -1 bass pattern.

8:07 4.3 LM in 2', same -1.

9:15 2.7 LM in 2',on the -1'.

10:37 2.4 LM in 2', on the -1.

11:18 1.6 LM in 3' on the -1

12:04 4lb Pike in 2',darn -1 :;)

1:06 4.1 LM in 4' of reeds and grass,Pumpkinseed Brush hog.

Needless to say I was the one throwing the brush hog ;D   I also threw suspending jerks, dbl willow leaf white spinners, jigs and senko's.

Matt always seems to throw the unorthodox type lures but not today. It was great to see him have this kind of outing.  :)Accidentely dealeted the pike pictures and video :'( Here's a few of the top fish minus the pike  :-/

Cool!

Thing about RI though is that we hve no 4lb Pike anymore.  That was probably a huge pickerel, yup,..even at Wordens.

Christine Dudley (D.E.M- Great Swamp) educated me last year regarding the whole Pike scenario in RI.

Years ago, RI bought milk and egg from Canada.  We put money aside to raise these at the bass hatchery.  They took the fingerlings and put them in Burlingame (the small one in Glocester, not the big one in Charlestown)  This pond was made for this purpose, it is a 2 ft deep rectangle.  They raised them there till they hit between 12-14" and then they use a sweep net to remove them.

They were placed in the 6 Pike waters of RI, Worden's, Echo, Stump, Johnsons, etc.  Now many of these Pike made it out of those bodies through the river and stream systems.  I have a 16.6 mounted (IGFA line class record) from a puddle called "Breezy lake" in Coventry (a run-off from Johnsons)

So, now we have Pike in these waters and guess what,...they are growing!! Awesome,...but now the bad news,...they are not reproducing.

So after 3 more yrs of observation and stocking, they realized that this was just the way it was so the entire program was dropped.

So the big Pike (like mine) being caught inthe last few yrs , are the last of the stocked fish.

With no reproduction, I would assume that was a huge, 4lb Pickerel.

If you know for sure that it was a Pike (checked the mandibular pores or checked for scaling on the lower gill plate) than please let me know and by all means, keep the next one.  I am in constant contact with the 2 biologists at URI that DEM works closely with and I'm sure they would  flip if I brought them a 4 lb Pike from RI water.

These guys are great, they will also follow up with me regarding what they found.

we worked closely regarding the "oatmeal" stuff that was on the winter-over stripers coming from the power plant water in Providence.  Turned out to be a natural form of "Ick", nothing viral but they appreciate having grass roots anglers helping out, being their extra set of eyes and ears.

Sorry for the hi-jack, I just thought that being  RI'er, you might find this interesting.

(ps- there is a tutorial in the FAQ's regarding posting multiple pics.  Built it myself, very easy to follow ;) )

I think they need to get on Johnson's then, Wood Cove in the spring time is loaded with 10-16" pike.

WOW  ;)

That beats the RI Pickeral record by what? 2 pounds? Very nice, got a JR tourney and a clubber down on the Haug this weekend. Hopefully my trap and football attract more than those slime-darts. ::(

Nice catch. I took my daughter out trout fishing yesterday up Hopkins Mill in Foster and caught a LM 2+lb. on 1/4 oz. kastmaster. No trout though. The bass were rolling on top like crazy and all I had was my trout tackle >;)

Low budget hooker I have to disagree with you as I know for a fact that there are little pike in a few places that I fish.  I do not know you well enough to tell you where they are maybe in the future we can take an adventure to these palces.  They have been producing and one is woods cove for sure but there are others.  If the state had the money to shock waters in some other ponds besides wordens they would also know this.  By the way guys you are hard core fishing wordens at this time of the year I call that the mini ocean of Rhode Island great catch.  Go get them as I can not this year.  See ya.

Dont shot me....but I was told the state shocked the Aquidneck in Coventry off Harkney Hill a while back, Im not sure of the source but he's had acess to the pond and has been fishing it for a few years now. I thought the state did random ponds through out....not just Wordens.

I hope you are correct as it would be off best interest for the state to do such.  They should make it public knowledge not so much weight but species and update the books that they give out.  Maybe there is some grant money out there for these experiments .  I know that we are in serious money trouble and the ponds are the last thing on the states mind at this time.  The statement before this was not meant for an argument it was a simple statment that there are things happeing in the waters that others are not aware of.

I understand completely D3....not taken as argumentitive at all, I was clearly passing on some info I heard,...but what I did learn was that there are to be some monster smallies in that pond and well as LMBs, I'll chat with the guy Mon morn and see what else came of it. ;)
