Bassnajr Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Hey guys.... Fished our first club tournament this past weekend here in RI and certain areas had water temps. around 63 degrees. Went out today and with the cold front and 2"+ of cold rain this past weekend, I feel the fish got screwed up a bit as far as the spawn goes. What do you all think...they do start from scratch with new beds etc. or will things "right" themselves with further warm weather and water??? I am anxious to here what everyone thinks... ajr Quote

I am anxious to here what everyone thinks... ajr They are all messed up. Was on Johnson's today and there were a lot of empty beds. Water temp went down about 13-15* degrees since that lovely 50* degree rain and I'm sure with upper 20's tonight it will get a lot colder. Those fish don't know what to do. That really quick warm up, now this. They were not on cover close to beds, in the grass in deeper water near beds, I have no clue where they were. I only picked up a few small rats around the trustle. I'm stumped :-? Quote
SenkoBasser Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 And to top it off.............. frost coming tonight. Go to deeper structure? The lake I fish at is artificial so there is a natural river bed contour. In situations like this, my instinct is to run a search bait along that contour..........my "panic pattern".... so to say. Try search baiting deeper? Points, drop offs and structure? I say with uncertainty. Empty beds suck ***. And this loooong cold front (if thats what it is) needs to hurry up and pass. Trout fishing is premo right now though. Quote
Cigarlover 1 Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 The weathers definately thrown them and me off. I was out fishing from shore Saturday and also saw some empty beds. I thought maybe they would've just backed off the beds into a little deeper water but no dice. They probably were there though just watching my lures go by. : Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 Stay NW. It's where you'll see the first signs of it picking back up. Quote
Super User Tin Posted May 1, 2008 Super User Posted May 1, 2008 Stay NW. It's where you'll see the first signs of it picking back up. The NW corner of Johnson's is where the river comes in, and it was pushing a lot of that 50* rain water in. lol That part of the lake was like fishing the Sahara Desert, no signs of life what-so-ever. =Matt 5.0= Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 Man, that was a quick spring/summer. I'm already shopping for my little guys Halloween costume. Just brought out the snow shovels again....just in case..... Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 It's definitely a frustrating time to fish right now, especially on weedy ponds. The ponds I've been fishing have tons of weeds/pads, but with this weather I feel like throwing a jerkbait. So the cover tells me to throw frogs and slop baits, but the weather/water conditions tell me to throw a jerkbait. It sucks and the only fish I can catch right now are caught on flukes and/or senkos worked around the weeds painfully slowly. And they're dinks. Don't know where the larger mamas went. Quote
Basshole18 Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 SOOO confused...the before this cold front the fish were starting to come onto the beds which was REALLY early especially for Cape Cod...then this intense cold front came and the cold rain and I did not bother to fish...THEN this morning I decided to go out and I was expecting to fish real deep with finesse baits and drop shots as we're still basically in a cold front. I got no bites deep so I moved in shallow w/ a t-rigged chigger craw in black/blue flke and I saw a good size female on the corner of a bed. I pitched to it and on the first "twitch" she inhaled it. She was in about 5 feet of water so I stuck to that pattern just moving along the edge of the pond casting to beds and flats in front of me and absolutely CREAAAMMMEDDD them. It was ridiculous. I was catching BIG females every few casts. They were on a feeding frenzy. I ended up getting my best limit of this year by far. I'm sooo confused...How could this be? Quote

Wondering what you like to use for drop shotting? Never really stuck it out but would like to learn more about it. Thanks, Paul Quote

Kevin Davis Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 new to fishing (again) but i went out last weekend, weather was nice at start of day but barometer was rising and water was cold but clear. I knew the fish would be deep but the water was way to choppy to sit on a deep hole. I used a black and silver jerk in the shallows, caught one pike and 6 or 7 small large mouths. water temp was around 57. sunny day. I could see fish everywhere but they just wernt in the mood to bite. Hopefully the water will warm up a little soon and they will bed and bite. Im northern Indiana. Quote
wagn Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 I've been out in the rain a couple of times lately, and the only thing i'm catching on is jerkbaits right near weed edges. Just trying to keep them from hanging up the weeds, and trying to find some part of the lake that's a little warmer then the rest. Yesterday it was the differance of a degree. I caught all my fish in 51 degrees instead of in the 50 degree water. Quote
