Hey guys i just bought a 10' flatbottom jon boat last week and was wondering do i have to register the boat? Would i have to register it if i use a trolling motor on it? what are the rules about that? If anyone knows plz let me no, and where would i go to register it if i had to? Thanks guys,

The law says you don't need registration. As soon as that trolling motor goes on....... you need registration. As soon as a combustion engine goes on....... you need registration and boaters certificate. I'm not sure of all of the Marine Patrol locations but I know there is one in Gilford, NH near Ellacoya State Park. You will need to bring the following: Title, Bill of Sale, prior year registration (if applicable), and your drivers license. And you'll need to take me out on it.  ;D Hey, I'll land some bass in it and I row like the wind.

Ughh. My canoe needs registration but it has no HIN. Kaos.

Ok only one problem is i don't have a title i just bought it off a guy from craigslist, i got a hand written bill of sale though would that be enough?

should be fine, is there a plate on the back of the boat with the make model and other #'s. That is what they referance the boat by. if you have any questions here's the # for the NH boat desk 603-271-2333. They should be able to answer any specific questions about your boat

It is 25 HP and over isn't it? One of my fishing buddies got busted last year for not having one. His outboard is only 5HP. Son of a %$@#.

I thought it would be this easy too but when I went to the registry, they look up that number and if it doesn't match the name on the bill of sale, you're in for some red tape.  Make sure the seller was the last person to register the boat.  If not, make sure he puts the name of previous owner in the bill of sale.

AJ your friend should not have been busted at all. It's anything over 25hp needs a certificate. Which is nice for me because I have a 25 hp on my boat. Also that law did not go into effect until Jan 1st of 08.  

So that's 2 reasons he should not have been fined.

When you get your renewal notice for your boat is states the new law right on the side

hello everyone, so i dont need to take the boater safety class, i have a 25 horse, i have been putting it off, because i am disabled and i cannot sit for 8hrs, that is awesome.

That's sweet! Getting the certificate is kind of a pain anyways. Now I have to drive mine up to Gilford 45 minutes away to get issued a HIN. Marine Patrol would come right to my house to do it but I'd have to wait two years.  :

If the boat was ever registered before,you need the bow numbers.

You need to bring a bill of sale.

You can ,I think, register at any DMV.I registered mine in Epping.After you first register the boat you can renew the reg at your town hall,or any town hall.I live in Exeter I can renew my reg in Kingston if I want.I dont think its only specific Town Halls,I could be wrong,I know Kingston does.

You also,even with just a electric motor have to have the safty equipment
