fish-fighting-illini Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 Just wanted to bring this to light for those who weren't aware of this. Someone was raising Asian Carp for re-sale for smoked food a few years ago near the Illinois river. The river flooded and some of the Asian Carp AKA ( flying Carp )ended up in the river. Fast forward a few years and the carp have made a huge disaster. They grow to as much as 20lbs(?) and won't bite most baits. These fish can jump many feet in the air. Most of the time a noise sets them off IE a jetski, certain boats etc. many a jetskier and rec boaters have had broken noses teeth broken etc. When the fish happens to land in a boat they have a very thin skin and start to bleed in the boat almost immediately ( yuck what a mess). Boat and jet ski sales are down a bunchas a result. In the wild like this these fish are huge breeders. They are killing the food forage balance and many types of bass, walleye and native fish of all types in general are dwindling. The monetary effects on water recreation and fishing is becoming a huge problem. An electric barrier was put up to try to keep them out of the great lakes. Problems with the barrier and fighting over who pays for the electricity of it is an ongoing effort. At times the barrier is not working as a result. Just an fyi. Quote
ILfisherman Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 They flooded into the Kankakee? Oh well, looks like I'm gonna have to bust out the sweet corn and 1/2 oz. sinker and catch some. What a fight!! Alot of ppl go bowfishing for them and actually hit them mid-air as they jump out of the water w/ broadheads, but you probably already know this. Carp are really a nuisance to IL waters and it is OK to kill them. Basically what I do after catching one is to unhook it, then, with all my might, toss it as high and far into the water as I possibly can! BOOM! It's like a bomb went off ;D Quote
Guest avid Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 Cool video......Never even heard of that stuff let alone seen it. How much skill do these guys have to have with a bow to shoot a fish out of the air. Quote
fish-fighting-illini Posted January 30, 2008 Author Posted January 30, 2008 Cool video......Never even heard of that stuff let alone seen it. How much skill do these guys have to have with a bow to shoot a fish out of the air. If it is the same guys I saw them do it on the local news. These guys are about 10 mins from where I live. They've had inquiries from all over the country wanting to come be "guided". Rumor was that Cindy Garrison was going to film an episode shooting carp. I don't know if she ever made it or not. I thought about going and watching / drooling when she came to town. She seems to be off of the air now so? By the way she should have been on my "hottest babe thread". She is obnoxious as heck but hot. Sorry Avid but she's even hotter than Angelina. Quote
IL_Bassman Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 I dont know if anyone knows where Bath, IL is but its a small town right off the Illinois River. There is a shoot that cuts off the river that will take you to Bath and there is a bar right on the river thats called the floating tavern. It doesnt float anymore but use to. Anyways back on topic, they have what they call a redneck fishing tournement. I believe they do this once a month. Pretty much its a bunch of rednecks running there boats down this Bath Shoot stirrin all the fish up and making them jump in the air. The object is to get as many fish in the boat as they can by any means except guns in the given time limit. Its actually quite the thing to see and a really good time to watch. Quote
backpain... Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 They should open a shotgun season on them, just think of it, instead of a gun dog you just need a jetskier! Quote
Tom H. Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 There is a group of guys that guide for bowhunters in the summer out of Bartonville , $200 a day and they will let you shoot at all the d**n things you want to . I know of a few local commerical fishermen that catch and sell them like crazy - Supposed to be good eating , but I don't think I'll be trying them anytime soon . Quote
IL_Bassman Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 I have actually tried frying some up once. Scored it like you would buffalo or regular carp. Its really boney and we couldn't get the bones to fry up. Other than than that the meat is really good. Its a really white meat. Quote
hamer08 Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 I have been waiting to try one myself. We have fun snagging them in the summer. The average size is probably 20 lbs, with the biggest probably running 35 lb, good fighters. Quote

Tom H. Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 I saw that the other night too. They are putting in down at Mendenhall Ramp outside of Bartonville . I can't believe people are willing to pay to go and shoot them , when all they need is a boat & motor . Walla free bow fishing for flying carps. Quote
rswell2 Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 Its sad what can happen to a perfectly good body of water. After watching the video, it almost looks like they're the only ones on the water aside from the paddle boat at the beginning. Do people just avoid this section of the river all together? Quote
JCrzy4Bass Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 Hey guys saw this thread and thought you may wanna check this link out. My friend sent me this video months back when this first became a prob. I guess over a year old or so. Anyway it shows what happens when you electroshock the water in the river now. Crazy. These things jump so hight and I can see now why people get hurt. I hope it just doesn't resort to having to poisin parts of the river and having years of a fish kill (kind of like cali did with the pike). I doubt it though seeing as this is an open river. Don't know what else they could do. Anyway... here you go. http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/tech/2007/06/21/mattingly.ms.river.carp.attack.cnn Quote
fishizzle Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 Carp baseball anyone? Those things are aweful Quote
