SBM-RL Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 The Ma state record is over 15 is there any expanations to it? how did a bass in Mass get so big? There are alot of arguments about the word record being shady do you think this could be shady to it is an old record? I beleave the bass was caught through the ice also? Anybody that knows alot about this record please share your knowledge. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted February 5, 2008 Super User Posted February 5, 2008 I'm from MA and yes, it was a bit over 15 lbs.. But that was like over 20 years ago. And it was caught thru the ice, not open water. The fish had to be way beyond her prime; probably near the end of her life. This was a very old fish, but MA has had some nice bass taken from her waters. I've seen a couple approaching 10 lbs. taken in years past. Very old fish. What the explanation is; probably due to living in a reservoir or lake with a moving stream thru it. Good forage base. Little fishing pressure. Quote
Cigarlover 1 Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 trout waters Bingo. There's a pond in my town where I've seen fish in the 8-10lb class caught and I've seen pics of fish that went 12 or 13lb no joke that were pulled from there. It's stocked with trout throughout the year. This particular pond is a fish from shore only pond so that definately helps because the fish live most of the year out of anglers reach but it doesn't suprise me at all the the state record is almost 16 lbs Quote
Saladmander Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 There's this older guy I used to see at one of my trout fishing spots that told me this story. I'd see him every year a handful of times that I'd go up there. He seemed pretty sincere and was a heck of a trout fisherman. Anyway, he fishes trout at this pond up in the northwestern part of mass that they stock every spring. He liked this one spot that produced some good numbers of rainbows. One year he had one on and an enormous bass hit it. Ripped the trout right off the end of his line and took off with it. A couple weeks or so later he was fishing that very same spot and hooked up with a rainbow that was hammered again by a huge bass, only managed to get this one in. He said, and I quote, "I couldn't believe it!! I never thought that would've happened again as long as I lived." It wasn't even hooked. I mean, the trout was, but the bass wouldn't let go. It tried to bail right by his legs. The bass weighed in at just under 10.5 lbs. I personally have never seen a living LM that big. This place isn't known for bass that big... but it has a good stock of 4-6lbers. She definitely knew how to put some pounds on. Until the secret got out about the fishing in California, I'd never think to try a rainbow imitation. But, I can believe that there are a handful, or more, of some 10-15 lbers spread out around the state. And as mentioned, probably in trout stocked waters. Quote
Dean Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 Great story and info Saladmander 8-) This lake up in New Hampshire I fish is stocked with trout reguraly, and I swear there are some monster bass being caught out of this lake. Theres a river that runs in to, so all the bass hang out along the edges of the current. It's my secret spot for hawgs 8-) Quote
Kozak Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 Yeah it's deffinately not impossible although I can't imagine catching a fish almost twice as heavy as my PB... I've heard of two 12lbers caught in waters in neighboring towns, trout stockings deffinately help Quote
tritz18 Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 I live in mass and have seen bass that were about 10 pounds, i can see the state record happening. must of been very lucky Quote
Bassnajr Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 IMO, The LMB record for the State of Rhode Island will fall soon. It is bound to happen with more anglers fishing "exclusivley" for bass and techniques, equipment, and knowledge advancing. Peace... ajr Quote
llPa1nll Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 I think allot of you are looking to quickly at this record and NOT taking all of the information in that it is telling you. Facts are this 15lbs 8oz caught in 1975 by one, Walter Bolonis through the ice, of Sampson Pond. Sampson Pond is in Carver, Carver is down by Cape Cod. Cape Cod extends out into the ocean, and for this Cape Cod's winters are generally quite mild compared too spots further inland hence prolonging the growing season of those fisheries. Quote
WTRDOG Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 THERE ARE NO TROUT STOCKED WHERE THE RECORD BASS WAS CAUGHT.I ALSO HEARD FROM AN OLD TIMER WARDEN (RETIRED),THAT THE FISH WASN'T CAUGHT AT SAMPSONS.BUT AT A NEARDY SPOT(WHICH I CANNOT DISCLOSE)..I FISH IT AND MY BEST THERE IS 7.4#,DID CATCH A LIMIT WHILE FISHING WITH A FRIEND 5 FISH 24.5 #.I KNOW THERE ARE 10#POUNDERS THERE.TO BE HONEST I'VE FISHED SAMPSONS POND AND DONT REGARD IT AS A GOOD BASS POND,PLUS THERES NO PARKING .I PARKED UP THE ROAD AT A FRIEND OF A FRIENDS HOUSE WHEN I FISHED THERE.IF YOU WANT TO CATCH BIG LARGEMOUTH AND HAVE THE PATIENTS TO THROW SOME BIG LURES TRY LONG POND PLYMOUTH,IT'S STOCKED WITH TROUT AND THE LARGIES ARE GROWING VERY,VERY BIG. Livingston Big Bass III Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 I'm wondering if Bass ... when they start getting over 10 lbs ... would even hit 95 % of the stuff in my tacklebox , due to size . I would think it would be easier and more efficient for a bass that big to eat bigger prey ( say a decent size trout ) leading to not having to spend the energy to feed as much . Making them harder to catch just for that reason alone . Nevermind all the other factors . My high weight this past season was 6.8 lbs . Caught on a Spinnerbait .. in a pond hardly anyone fishes at . I've only seen one other boat there all season . I think there might be a 12 lb in there somewhere . I've caught monster pickerel in there too .. the bass must feed on them .. Quote

If you think about it though. Sampson Pond may not be a good bass spot ANYMORE because the record was said to come from there don't you think everyone piled in and fished it out, especially after this many years. Quote
WTRDOG Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 IT NEVER WAS A REALLY GOOD SPOT,THE LAKE DOESNT HAVE THE PRESSURE DUE TO FINDING A PLACE TO PARK.THE POND ISNT A FERTILE POND ,AND I DONT BELEIVE THE RECORD CAME FROM THERE....MY OPINION Quote
d.hark Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 You never know what to believe. I heard it came form the Agawam mill pond river in brackish water. And he was afraid they wouldnt count it cause it came in salt water. Quote
