Leaping Lunkers Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 I've been Bass fishing for thirty years, and this past weekend, I broke down and bought a bait cast rod and reel, and some Bass fishing tackle. I live in the small city of Changnyeong, which is located between Masan, Daegu, and Pusan. There are several small ponds, reservoirs in the area. I walked to the nearest big reservoir and started fishing. There were some weeds beside the shoreline so I threw a buzz bait by the weeds and brought it across the weeds. I made several casts, but no hits. I changed to a creature bait and threw across the weeds. As the bait neared the weeds, I got a bite, but the fish didn't run with the bait. I twitched the line a few times, and he hit again, but didn't take the bait. I reeled in and threw again. Another bite at the weed bed. I set the hook but no fish. I cast back to the weeds, but the fish was gone. No more bites. I fished down the shore line using the creature bait, but no fish. I walked down the bank and saw some people fishing Korean style, with long poles and bobbers. I passed them and kept fishing. I fished on down the bank to the bend. No fish. The day should have been perfect for fishing. The temperature was rising, my guess was it was near 75 and a light wind was picking up. The Bass should be moving on the shore to feed. I tied the buzz bait back on, and I made several casts along the shore at the bend. Still no fish. I decided to walk back to the place where I started and try the weeds again. I walked by the people who were fishing, and I could see some fish in their basket. I couldn't see what kind of fish they had. I had seen some dead Bluegill in the water that someone had caught, about a week ago, and left in the water to rot. I passed the fishermen and walked a little further down the bank. I saw some weeds near the bank, and I cast the buzz bait by them. I brought the buzz bait through the weeds and almost back to shore when I saw a swirl under my buzz bait. I stopped retrieving and the Bass hit. It was 10". I made another cast to the outside of the weeds, another Bass, 8". I walked down the bank to another small group of weeds and cast the buzz bait, another Bass 6". In 15 minutes I had caught 6 Bass, not very big, but fish. They were my first Bass since Bass fishing in Korea. If this weekend is nice, I'll go back to that reservoir. Quote

Triton20x Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 Are the prices low on fishing gear in korea? Quote
Korea_Bassin Posted June 15, 2010 Author Posted June 15, 2010 Are the prices low on fishing gear in korea? Definitely not. Spinnerbait: >$15 Crankbait: $15-$20 As for reels, add at least 30% to whatever price you can buy it for in the states. Quote

briggs Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 Hello, everyone. I am stationed at camp humprey's and looking on places to fish near the base or osan, since transportation is a issue. also, a place to buy tackle in the area. I spent most of my time fishing Virgina waters at my last duty station. Croaker, spot, drum a,d flounder. caught a few , but nothing to brag about. Quote
Korea_Bassin Posted June 6, 2011 Author Posted June 6, 2011 Hello, everyone. I spent most of my time fishing Virgina waters at my last duty station. Croaker, spot, drum a,d flounder. caught a few , but nothing to brag about. briggs, Welcome to "The Hump". There are several good places to fish nearby. The river directly behind base has lots of largemouth bass up to 4-5 pound range. They are currently doing construction along the riverside and launching a boat is difficult right now, but there is one ramp that recently reopened near the tower resturant. There are also usually boats for rent but I'm not sure how the ongoing construction has affected that venture. There is also a good resevoir (Daeho) about an hour southwest of Humphreys near Dangjin. I've fished there a lot this year and had some great success on every trip. As for buying tackle, you'd be much better off ordering from the states. Fishing tackle here is ridiculously expensive. The only tackle that I buy locally is jigheads and snap swivels. Everything else is just too expensive because of their ridiculous import taxes. Spinnerbait: ~$15; Crankbait: ~$20. What's this free trade deal we speak of? I understand...for every Hyundai or Kia we buy, you import one Berkley crankbait. Seems fair to me. NOT! But I digress and run the risk of being booted here for "political comment". Anyway, shoot me an email if you need more fishing info about the area. There's a lot of good places around and a lot of good people to assist you. I'll send you a link to a local blog that has a LOT of good fishing info about the area. Welcome to Korea and thank you for your service to our great nation. Quote
