vaparrothead Posted October 21, 2008 Author Posted October 21, 2008 Redliner: Great reply; I didn't see the post until after you had replied. The reports I've been seeing indicate a lot of fish being caught but not that many grandes (20+ lbs) this year. Same with you?? Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted October 21, 2008 Super User Posted October 21, 2008 Vaparrothead I'm hearing the same thing, leaving the 13th of November. I'll have a full report when I get back! Quote

Super User Redlinerobert Posted October 21, 2008 Super User Posted October 21, 2008 They are larger, more aggresive, and you have the different sub species as well. Quote
vaparrothead Posted October 24, 2008 Author Posted October 24, 2008 As I recall from reading about the Florida strain the biggest one caught so far was approximately 9lbs. Some guides in South America won't even bother bringing a 9lb fish in the boat; they'll shake them off at boatside. "Grande" fish are over 20lbs and that's some serious fighting fish!!! Redliner: I leave on 26 November, do you know where you're fishing, looks like we'll be on the Cunini (not Unini) just North of Barcelos. Quote
Pavon_Pro Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 Good Luck on your Peacock Trip! Last I checked the cunini was still a little high but they were catching some good fish in the headwaters. I really like the Unini, a great river for 18-23lb fish unfortunatly its closed to fishing. The madiera water sheds are low and the operations are reporting 200+ per person per day but biggest are teeners around 15 to 17lbs. Venezuelas amazon region is closed to tourism, but the lake fishing is pretty decent. Lake Guri, Caruachi and La Coromoto are probably the hottest for big fish but numbers are low. I fished a tournament yesterday in La Coromoto and my fishing partner got big fish with 14.5lb 3-bar putting us in third place out of 76 boats. But the numbers were low. Panama also has Peacock Bass (cichlid monoculus) that are alot of fun to catch. Smaller and not as aggresive but still alot of fun to catch. Record is about 11lbs from Lake Gatun. I fished there weekend before last and caught a 8.8lb, 6.5lb and a 5.4lb. I tried trolling for Snook and Tarpon but do to the expanding of the Panama canal the water was muddy in the areas known to hold Tarpon and Snook. The peacock bass in Miami is cichlid oceolaris (butterfly) and the IGFA all tackle was around 12lbs, caught here in Venezuela and they are incredible fighters. I would through my guide in the water if he tried to shake one off. The other butterfly is cichlid orinocensis, record on it was about 14lbs caught in Venezuela and also a great fighter. But they both dont compare to the 3-bar, cichlid temensis found in Venezuela, Columbia and Brazil which gets alot bigger and tuggs twice as hard.IGFA record is 27lbs. I usually get fairly non biased info on water levels and conditions and would be happy to post here. Good luck!!!!!!!! Charles Quote
vaparrothead Posted October 27, 2008 Author Posted October 27, 2008 Pavon_Pro: Any information you have would be apprecaited. I've fished the Unini the last two years and couldn't agree with you more. It's a fantastic river with many Grande Fish. My biggest last year was 23 lbs and lost a bigger one. Hope Cunini comes around with bigger fish. Catching "tweeners" is OK but really want big fish; don't we all!!! Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted October 27, 2008 Super User Posted October 27, 2008 I'm fishing the Rio *****, through Amazon tours. I fly into Barcelos as well from Manaus. From there we take a river boat to the lodge. Pavon_Pro, good to see you posting here! What are the water conditions on the Rio *****? Quote
Pavon_Pro Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 I heared yesterday that it was still high around Barcelos. But I know people are catcing some big fish in the northern parts of the *****. As the water falls the bigger fish come out of the trees first. I went 3 weeks ago to rio Urubu just to fish a new river as most everthing was too high. Too close to the fish market in Manaus. Biggest was about 13lb. I will probably head back in November. Quote
vaparrothead Posted November 6, 2008 Author Posted November 6, 2008 Heard the area around Barcelos is getting a lot of rain. Some outfitters are talking about shutting down and praying the water will fall. Do you have any clue what's happening? Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted November 8, 2008 Super User Posted November 8, 2008 First I've heard....I will find out and get back to you. Quote

Super User Redlinerobert Posted November 17, 2008 Super User Posted November 17, 2008 Amazon Tours ishe best in my opinion. This will be my 4th trip down there, they reallyt ake care of you. The trip is $5900, when you factor in flights and tips and what not, you're in it about $9-$10,000 per person. Quote
vaparrothead Posted November 23, 2008 Author Posted November 23, 2008 For my money try Don Cutter Amazon Fishing Adventures (www.peacockbasstrips.com). This is my third trip with them, the only outfitter I've ever used so can't compare to anyone else. But I've asked other fisherman on our trips who have used other outfitters and they've told me that Cutter is the best. Prices this year are $3500 not including airfare so plan on 5-6 thousand and that's for everything. Quote
bob anderson Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 Just came back from the amazon. had a great trip, cost was 4250 for the fishing package plus airfare. It really isnt that expensive for the best 6 fishing days of your life. Quote
