smallieking Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 i was thinking about fishing for this upcoming season i was thinking about one of my favorite small rivers that i wade. well there is alot of shad in it and my favorite baits are the shallow shad rap and glass shad rap. well i like the shallaw sr on my spinning rod and the glass sr on my light baitcaster. well i normally only take one rod with me when i go wading i would like to use both baits so i can adjust to the depth of the river any suggestions? the only think i thought of is just taking both rods and leaving one on shore and carrying both when i move but i really dont want to do that Quote
dman Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 a sloution i have used: pick up one of those telescoping rods at Gander Mt...Might be like $20 or something, Get a backpack and you can keep your tackle plus the extra rod in there. And its very comfortable Quote
fishizzle Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 try replacing the split ring on both lures with the qiuck change teardrop shaped ring (sorry, I don't know the name of it yet) So 1 rod, 2 lures, 5 second lure change Quote

Super User .dsaavedra. Posted February 23, 2008 Super User Posted February 23, 2008 why cant you just use both baits on the same rod :-? Quote
fishizzle Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 I meant in my last reply to tie the snap to your line, then quick snap to your lure without a split ring Or a snap without a swivel I hope this helps--I hate going to the bank to get another rod when you can just walk upsteam in the water http://www.tackletour.com/reviewultimateluresaver.html Quote
fishnaddiction Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 i have the same problem when fishing creeks sometimes i will take a float tube that u sit in and fish just put alot of tackle in it and some rods just tie it on your belt and its always there it does get in the way alittle but works pretty good then for the river u can just jump in and fish out of it Quote
smallieking Posted February 23, 2008 Author Posted February 23, 2008 the shallow swimming bait is very light and doesnt cast well on my baitcaster and i dont want to use the deeper diver on my spinning because my small cranking spinning rod isnt very strong to get a good hookset with that bait and my rodtip isnt use to that type of resistance how hard is it to get out and put away the telescoping rod? i dont want to take 10 minutes just to break down a telescoping rod and put it away i dont know i never used a telescoping rod Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted February 23, 2008 Super User Posted February 23, 2008 May I ask what your spinning outfit is ? ROD---power/action. REEL SIZE---- Quote
smallieking Posted February 23, 2008 Author Posted February 23, 2008 its a 6 foot med light diawa rod not sure what the reel size is its a small mitchell its the perfect rod for really little jerkbaits and crankbaits for trout but i like it for cranks that is too light for a bc Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted February 23, 2008 Super User Posted February 23, 2008 Your rod should be rated for 4-10 lb. line and 1/8-1/2 oz. baits. You said you didn"t want to throw deep cranks with it. How deep are you talking about ? Unless you are throwing into ten ft. or deeper, your rod would be good enough if you have your drag set properly. Quote
smallieking Posted February 23, 2008 Author Posted February 23, 2008 8-10 foot i just dont feel comfortable throwing heavier cranks with it i want my rods to last how hard is it to fold up and unfold those telescoping rods? Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted February 24, 2008 Super User Posted February 24, 2008 SORRY , I CAN'T HELP YOU WITH ANY INFO. ON TELESCOPING RODS. GOOD LUCK. Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted February 24, 2008 Super User Posted February 24, 2008 smallieking, they are very easy to expand and collapse. all you do it just strech it out to its full length to expand it. and then just push the sections toward the butt to collapse. the process takes a few seconds. but according to rapalas website, the 2.5" version of the shallow shad rap is 3/16oz, the 2.75" version is 1/4 oz, and the 3.5" version weighs 3/8oz. so the only one i could see as being difficult to cast is the 2.5" version. im sure if you practiced in your yard casting your shallow shad rap and playing w/ the controls on your casting reel, you could cast it no problem once the reel is set up right. perhaps it would be easier to just buy a bigger bait instead of buying a new rod? im sure the fish wouldnt notice 1/4" increase in size. those crankbaits are more of a reaction strike than a finesse type lure, so it wouldnt matter much. smallieking Posted February 24, 2008 Author Posted February 24, 2008 o thanks yea if i wanted to i can throw it on the bc but its very difficult to make accurate cast and if there is any wind you wont be able to just because u can throw a lure on something doesnt mean u should i dont want any more new cranks the one i have is perfect for shallow water i jsut need something that will help me carry two rods while i wade not just for different size cranks but for all types of different presentions i want to use at the same time like when your on the boat u can just put one rod down and pick up another well dsaava how much does a telescoping rod cost and how dependable are they i dont want to send 50 bucks on something that will break as soon as i hook into a fish Quote
HesterIsGod Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 im gonna have to disagree with you guys a little. I dont recommend the telescopic rods. I had a lot of experience with them because i used to frequently use them when i back packed deep into the montanian wilderness with my dad in search of trout. They are not durable, break easily, the guides break or chip easily, and after a year or so, the parts of the pole start to stick together when they come out. Do you know how FRUSTRATING it is when they do that. I cant imagine how frustrating that would be while wading in the middle of a flowing stream. Just my opinion on them, maybe we just got a few bad brands I suggest using snap swivels, their quick and dont negatively affect the action of baits w/ split rings. Quote

Super User Grey Wolf Posted February 24, 2008 Super User Posted February 24, 2008 THIS IS GETTING BORING!!!!!!!!! Quote
Stringjam Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 Just use the balsa diving Shad Rap instead of the Glass Rap - - - they're lighter - and they don't have any problem catching fish. Quote
smallieking Posted February 24, 2008 Author Posted February 24, 2008 yea dsaava i thought about 2 piece rods but it takes too long to break them down and wrap em up thanks hester i was going to go buy one thanks good thing im not now hmmm yea i try the balsa style to see how it works i think im going to buy a few in like a 6 foot diving hell i might even buy a new spinning rod just for this situation what do u guys think? i dont want an expensive rod just a simple spinning rod i can use any crankbait with im thinking like a 6'6 foot medium action reply im interseted in what u guys think of just a new rod Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted February 24, 2008 Super User Posted February 24, 2008 how does it take long to break down a 2pc. rod? theres nothin to it! just take it apart (2 seconds) and then reel in the slack (5 seconds) and stuff it in your backpack (10 seconds). its that easy. as far as getting a new rod just for this situation, i would much rather buy a different bait than buy a different rod. im sure the fish will bite other things than the shallow shad rap or glass shad rap. so do like stringjam said, either get a heavier shallow diver or a lighter deep diver and only pack one rod. Quote
smallieking Posted February 24, 2008 Author Posted February 24, 2008 well then it takes 10 minutes to get it back out aaa well i need a verstiable rod i know that these two baits work at this one river yea i was thinking about a little bit shallower running glass rap and it would be ok but i think im goin to just get a new rod so i can use it for a bunch of different techinques and other gamefish but i really dont know of any good veristal rods so i will have to shop around hmm idk Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 25, 2008 Super User Posted February 25, 2008 You can fish just about everything you would normally fish on a river with one rod. I suggest a Medium Power/ Fast Action spinning rod. You don't "need" anything else. 8-) Quote
Bass n Bows Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 If you don't have any problems with overhanging trees where you wade then I would suggest using a backpack or a hydration pack to put your spare rod into. I just bought a hydration pack at wallmart. It is just like a backpack but a lot smaller and more comfortable, and I can fit 3 rods in it perfectly! Quote
Zel Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 Don't know anything about them, but have you seen these? http://www.cabelas.com/prod-1/0036759018468a.shtml http://www.thirdgrip.com/index.htm Quote
