utahbasser Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 today i got 3 x raps in size 8. i have 1 in size 10 already but i don't use it that much. i'm wondering what size everyone else uses. and is the rapala knot the best knot to tie for this lure? thanks Quote
The_Natural Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 I generally use the palomar for everything except fluoro. I admitteldly use the palomar while using the Trilene Fluoro when I am in a hurry...that line is so soft I can't distinguish the difference in the knots. I throw the silver/black backed X-rap the majority of the time, and it proves itself again and again. I feel that using a spinning rod and 8lb fluoro while working jerkaits give me an advantage. I've out fished my boater several times while working jerkbaits due to my bait running deeper with the light fluoro. Try it and see... Quote
xxmurrxx Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 I use palomar knot for x-raps. Both sizes are good for me, i really like the 8's for shallower water. Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted February 27, 2008 Super User Posted February 27, 2008 I have great success with both sizes. My best colors are Silver,Clown, Silver/Blue, and Hot Pink. I use improved clinch or a Dou Lock snap. Falcon Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 27, 2008 Super User Posted February 27, 2008 I always start with the #10, if they are short striking or just following I move down to the #8. I fish the #10's on casting gear, this year it's going to be with 10 or 12lb Trilene Flurocarbon, and the #8's on spinning gear with 8lb Trilene Flurocrabon. Last year I used mono, and never had issues, bt ould like to get the baits deeper and have been told Fluro is just the ticket. I use Clown, Silver, Gold, Olive, and Perch in both sizes. Smallmouth love the Clown color. Quote
Bass n Bows Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 I have caught many fish with the gold 8's. I've never been man enough to try the 10's. :-[ Quote
Joel W Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 My go to Jerkbait is a #10 XRap. For Smallies I prefer a Perch or clown color. If they're not hitting the #10 XRap I downsize to a #8 XRAP or even a Floating minnow with a tighter wobble. For LM I prefer a Aurora/Black back or a Trout colored #10 XRap. As for my preferred knot, it's a Palomar knot. Quote
HOIST-N-HAWGS Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Just started throwing the #12 last year and have had good results. Even bass smaller then 1lb,but most of the time much heavier then that. Palomar or loop knot for me. Quote
utahbasser Posted February 27, 2008 Author Posted February 27, 2008 i usaully tie the trilene knot or improved clinch knot. do you think i would be safe to tie those on there? i also use the polamar knot too Quote
Joel W Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 i usaully tie the trilene knot or improved clinch knot. do you think i would be safe to tie those on there? i also use the polamar knot too Go with the Palomar knot as the line goes through the eye twice. Just a very, very strong knot. Quote
skillet Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 I like the palomar knot on a no. 10 X Rap. Went to a pond day before yesterday (promise ;)this is no fish story) and caught a bass that was only 1" longer than said bait and maybe only twice as big around ... As Ever, skillet Quote
Super User FishTank Posted February 28, 2008 Super User Posted February 28, 2008 The improved clinch knot is my favorite for jerkbaits including the x-rap. Quote
Joel W Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 The improved clinch knot is my favorite for jerkbaits including the x-rap. The problem with both a Clinch and improved Clinch knot is that they do slip from time to time, and the line only goes through the eye once. Nothing is stronger or as easy to tie as a Palomar knot. utahbasser Posted February 28, 2008 Author Posted February 28, 2008 i just don't tie the polamar knot enough. its pretty hard for me to get it over the whole lure, but i'll figure it out by fishing time. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 28, 2008 Super User Posted February 28, 2008 i just don't tie the polamar knot enough. its pretty hard for me to get it over the whole lure, but i'll figure it out by fishing time. I use the Palomar Knot for single hooks and some lures, but for big lures I do just fine with the Uni, Trilene or more recently, San Diego Jam Knot. The Palomar is cumbersome to tie long plugs with treble hooks! 8-) Quote
utahbasser Posted February 28, 2008 Author Posted February 28, 2008 yeah i agree with rw. i like the trilene when using big plugs and the polamar when i'm dropshotting or small lures Quote
Joel W Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I got use to tieing a Palomar knot with big lures when I tied on a spinnerbait. It just takes a little practice for it to become 2nd nature. Quote
