Jortego Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 Hey guys, i live in O'Fallon and Im pretty new to fishing but eager to learn. Im picking up a lot from the internet but I find the best way to learn is to do it. So I'm lookin for someone experienced who wouldn't mind a tag along. I have some of my own gear but don't own a boat so ponds are fine with me. To be clear, Im not a complete newb... Just didn't grow up with the opportunities to go. Thanks for any help you guys can offer. Quote
VintageRed Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 I mostly fish the local ponds/lakes in the Fenton area. Simpson, 2 Fabick lakes, Unger park. The only fish I've ever caught was fishing the Mermeac river where the Simpson lake runs off to. It was a puny 8 inch small mouth. I've tried the Busch lakes but it's a bit of a drive and I've never had success bass fishing there as well.  It's been a frustrating experience and I'm researching other places to try and I've seen the Queeny Lake/Spanish Lake mentioned. I will try those next. I don't own a boat so I fish from the bank. Quote
Dan Peter Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 Me and a Buddy just fished Busch Wildlife. Had a good time before the rain today. Caught one on top water frog in lake #37. Only got to be on the water for about 30 mins before the rain really hit. Planning our next trip for next weekend!! Quote
kjfishman Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 I am from the western edge of St. Louis, Wentzville.  We have Lincoln Lake, 2 lakes in  Bowling Green and some conservation area's close by. Quote

I usually have luck with a pumpkinseed trigged worm or a smoke grub.  The bass in my pic came outta Unger. Tough lake to fish, but there are big ones in there. Quote

Last time I was there was about a year and a half ago, water was low and didn't even get a bite. I was fishing tight line with worms off the bottom at that time. The park has been closed because of high water. Might have to run by and check it out tonight. Â Â Quote
gramps50 Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Went to Unger for a little while this evening. Fished what looks to be a spillway to the Meramec. There was plenty of forage right at the bank but no bits using a worm and a Ned's rig, sliver/white inline spinner nor with the jointed crank bait. Was trying to use my baitcaster under the trees which was a mistake, need more practice with it. Quote

gramps50 Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 I can remember going there 25 years ago or so to run my RC boat and I sure don't remember it looking like it does now. As I recall we parked in a parking lot pretty much on the end where you enter the park, then walked my 20 ft to the water. Didn't fish then so all I did was run the RC boat around.  Now it seems over grown and not very well taken care of fishing would probably be better out of  a kayak or canoe.  I'll have to try some Senkos when the water goes down some more, which looking out the window won't be anytime soon...   I went to Bee Tree park the other night, all I caught was 5 bluegill just before sunset. Was fishing the lower end so I may have been in the wrong part have heard reports of some nice fish coming out of there. Quote
NshBass Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 St. Louis here, anyone know if Tilles Park lake has any bass in it? Been there 4 times: plastics, spinner, buzz, crank bait and have nothing to show for it except practice after several years of non fishing. The itch is back! Quote
Lipsinker Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 South St. Louis. Grew up fishing here and there on vacations, and recently have really gotten into Bass fishing. I don't own a boat (yet) and I've been trying to get to relatively close places for bank fishing to practice and become more proficient on various tackle so when I get the chance to be out on a boat I can maximize my time. I've been hitting Creve Coeur, Bush, and to lesser extents Tilles, Carondalet, and Suson, and am going to try Queeny soon, any other worthwhile suggestions not yet mentioned on this thread?  I've also heard of some place in West Alton run by MO Conservation that has some real horses, and I think I found it the other day, called something Island, I forget exact name. It looked like tough going from the shore (obviously Jon Boat would be ideal) but I didn't get a chance to explore it too long because my 4 year old son was getting annoying. Any thoughts on this place?  Thanks Quote

Been there 4 times: plastics, spinner, buzz, crank bait and have nothing to show for it except practice after several years of non fishing. The itch is back! I caught a small Bass and a very big Blue Gill the other day on crank bait. I've seen a picture of a huge (5lb.ish) Bass my buddy got there once, so it's definitely worth monkeying around at for me, especially because it is so close to my house. I second the last post, i have seen one big one in there, caughta few smaller ones and one decent one. I think Forest Park is a much better city  fishery IMO. Quote
NshBass Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 Got 4 small ones last night on a spinner and buzz at Tilles. I got them all in the far corner near the grass/lily pads. Anyone know if Kirkwood Park is decent fishing from the bank? Quote
macmichael Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Newby here.  My name is Macmichael and I live in the Oakville area. I am retired, married, love to fish, cook, bar b q, meet new people. I have been fishing the other side of the river this past year. Rend, Carlyle, Shelbyville, Coffeen, etc. My wife and I fish with a guide on the Mississippi River once or twice a year. Last time we went she caught a 47 pound blue cat. Actyally 5 of our biggest fish nearly weighed 200 pounds. Great time. We only keep ones 10 pounds and under, let the big ones go so others can enjoy the fun of catching a big fish right here in old St. Louis. Hope to meet some of you in the future.Macmichael   PS: I will appoligize for my spelling up front!!!  Quote
MO_LMB Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Howdy macmichael. I'm in crestwood, married, love to fish and cook too, but I am far from retired (26). I typicaly hit up the public parks around St. Louis. Tilles, Queeny, Simpson, Fabick, and my favorite - Forest Park. Quote
macmichael Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 Hey MO_LMB. How do you do at those lakes? I like your spook. That's one of my favorite lures. Â Â Mac Quote
MO_LMB Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 I typically do the best at Queeny and Forest. Â At queeny can't beat a texas rigged plastic and a topwater frog or popper. Â Forest Park is pretty dynamic, it can take a while to figure out what they want. There is some underwater grass all throughout the lake that will blow around depending on the wind, so that is the key to finding the fish. Once you find them they are pretty easy to catch and suprisingly big for a public pond. I like the spook, buzzbait, crankbait, jig, tx rig worms here. Â Fabick is fun but I haven't caught anything decent out of there, just some tiny ones. Â I forgot about Carondelet Park. That place can be pretty fun too. Â Hey MO_LMB. How do you do at those lakes? I like your spook. That's one of my favorite lures. Â Â Mac Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted September 28, 2013 Super User Posted September 28, 2013 For those that fish out at Busch Wildlife, lake 32 is closed for now. Sometime earlier in the week that lake had a fish kill. Quote
Harva Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 South County here, actually Oakville. Also spend a lot of time at LOZ. Quote
MO_LMB Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 There was a fish kill at Tilles Park too... I don't think there stocking it again until trout season. Quote
jmorisaki Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 Hey everyone, I'm new to the forums and just wanted to introduce myself. I live in Ballwin and just got into fishing about five years ago. I caught a 3lber at Table Rock and have been hooked since (pun intended). I've even started fishing in a pro-am style tournament circuit - The central pro-am. Locally I've read a lot of great info and places to try. Most of my experience has been at Busch's or a local sub division pond (which sprung a leak and drained last month). Anyway thanks for all the info. Quote
