kylek Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Well, we decided we are going to try our luck at Smithville since gas prices are so high right now. I will show my father in law the map above. He knows how to get around the bad spots. It just seems like no matter where we go we end up getting skunked. Hoping to return tomorrow with a good report. Quote

Doc-Drew Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Went to Melvern Saturday to enjoy the nice weather with my new wife and hopefully catch some nice smallmouth. Elizabeth caught 3 fish, 17" smallmouth, 16.5" largemouth, and 15" spot, before I landed my first "monster" bass- a 4.25" spot on a 4" jerkbait. The action slowed down as the day went on but we ended with about 30 total fish. We caught all 3 species of bass, a couple crappie, a green sunfish, and a drum. Also, the gar were spawning at the dam so we got to see them surfacing quite a bit. I wasn't aware that melvern even had gar in it. On a different note, has any one been fishing the smaller lakes? I would like to get out this weekend to some smaller lakes to avoid the Memorial Day traffic. 1 Quote
cbass12 Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Were the crappie shallow that you caught? I'm going out Friday and would love to go chase the smallies at melvern, but my wife wants me to fill the freezer with crappie. It would be great if I could catch enough there to make her happy and catch a couple 4 pound smallmouth in the process. Quote
MattX Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Hey Drew, Are you still going to CCC? I always wondered if CCC in front of your name meant Cleveland CC but wasn't sure but I saw on your profile you were. Just wondering because I started there in January 1 Quote
Doc-Drew Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Cbass, one crappie was caught on the Ned rig in roughly 6'. The other was caught on a 4.5" fire tiger jerkbait in about the same depth. Matt, yes I do go to Cleveland. I am in tri 8/10. Only a little longer left. Quote
bkohlman Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 CCCDrew - that Spotted Bass you caught was close to the state record! Wish you had a picture of it. The only spots I have caught are pretty small, but that is because I was fishing out of a very low Fox Creek. Quote
pbrussell Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Oh PLEASE tell me you managed to snap some kind of photograph of that spot Quote
kylek Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 It says a 4.5 inch bass not a 4.5lb bass or am I reading his post wrong? Quote
pbrussell Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 It says a 4.5 inch bass not a 4.5lb bass or am I reading his post wrong? Yup. You're right. I got all kinds of excited for no reason... Quote
pbrussell Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Oh well. Drew, I'm with you on hitting some less populated water this weekend. I'm thinking nebo, garnett cedar valley, or mound city. In fact, with critzer attracting so many fishermen in that area, mound city could actually be the ticket. Quote
Doc-Drew Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Haha I wish that tiny bass would have been 4.5lbs. I definitely would have taken a picture of it. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 22, 2013 Global Moderator Posted May 22, 2013 Wyandotte had 70 degree water this morning, you should be good at any lake you'd want to go to. Quote

Doc-Drew Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 When I fished Melvern Saturday, the ramp was ~70 but the main lake points on the south side were around 60. Quote
MattX Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Sweet deal Drew, At least you're almost done. I'm still undergrad =/ Quote

Lots of big fish in East Lake. Just have to sort through the dinks. The island is probably my best big fish spot. Quote
Mr_Scrogg Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Got the wife out. After I worked all night and her working a 12hr shift. Lol Still learning position, launching and retrieving. Top water blow up on a 7" Slammer. Oh yea!!! Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 25, 2013 Global Moderator Posted May 25, 2013 Nobody has been fishing?? The wife and I spent last week on a private lake, Lake Hampton, in South Carolina with a friend that lives there. The lake is awesome and it has Tiger Bass in it. They look just like largemouth but are more aggressive and grow twice as fast. We didn't catch any of the monsters that have come from the lake but more 3 and 4 pounders than a person should be allowed to catch in a week. There isn't a spot on the lake that doesn't look fishy. This is the view from Jack's backyard, I don't know how he ever gets anything done around the house. His customized pontoon with a livewell, down imaging on the front and back, 70lb trolling motor with remote control is what we fished out of. I liked their docks on the lake, they're built into the bank instead of being built out into the lake. Lots of fish where pulled from the dock stalls while we were there. Arrowhead plants lined the banks everywhere along with cattails and various other kinds of vegetation. Lots of bass came shooting out of these weeds to destroy my frog. I caught more frog fish last week than the rest of my life combined no doubt. A few of these bridges cross over the lake. Nicole caught a lot of her fish out from under the bridges. Where do you start when all the banks around you look like this? Nicole caught a 3 pounder that threw up a foot long eel so I put on a Yum Mightee worm and caught this fish my first cast. The last day I got onto them good with a 5" Optimum line through swimbait I got from the Fishmas exchange. Sight fished this one and the next with the swimbait, awesome. Nicole and I with our two biggest the last day. Her was her new PB, which beat her previous PB that she'd caught 2 days prior. She caught it on a 5" black blue flake BPS stick O, wacky rigged, which is what she caught all of her bass on. It weighed 4.58 pounds and was the biggest fish of our trip. Probably would have been almost 5 but it threw up an eel that was probably 14" long while she was fighting her. My biggest was 4.51 pounds and was the very first fish of the trip for me, it ate one of my home made brush jigs under an overhanging tree. 2 Quote
