My dog just barks at the water, likes to get in while he can touch, after that he freaks a bit. Shelties are made for the rolling farmland, not water. Hahaha

One of my wife's shelties loves the water, the other one hasn't really gotten a chance to be around the water.

Is Melvern any good this time of year?  Going to be in the 50s on Sunday (at least for now) and I want to get into some smallmouth bad!!!

Heading for LaCygne this Sunday, it has to be better than last Sunday.

After the 2 cold days in a row we're suppose to have I wouldn't have very high hopes if I was headed down there. All the zebra mussels pretty much take away most of the real cold water techniques I'd be using. I know the crappie fishermen are catching a few on minnows and crappie tubes though.

Welcome to the forum! La Cygne has been really tough lately and it's usually worse on the weekend, especially if it's nice outside. 5 different members that I know of went last week and I think between all of us on 3 different days managed to boat 5 or 6 fish.

Two weeks ago I really have fun watching Fish and Game double ticket people.  Once at the hot water outlet for pole/hooks and then in the parking lot for creel limits.

I've never seen them do anything but give warnings to people and confiscate gear from people. Most people at the outlet it doesn't do much good to ticket because they don't exist in the system.

"Gear" you mean the beer bottles with line wrapped around them?

BTW

I have a gasoline welder / generator I would like to trade for a canoe.

After walking Hillsdale a little yesterday and seeing some folks catching crappie under the Gardner Bridge my plan had been to get some minnows today and see if I could catch a few. Stopped at the baitshop/gas station in Hillsdale and the guy behind the counter said a couple guys had caught over 200 crappie at the outlet yesterday. Said they were thick in there and hungry. He must have been right because I was even able to catch a few :) They started liking the minnows but by the end they were preferring a jig. I don't know how deep the outlet is but I started fishing the bottom couple feet with very little luck. Once I noticed the guy on the other side catching fish fast only had his bobber set only about 2 feet down I moved my bobber up and started catching them right away. Fished for about 2 hours and caught probably between 40-50 crappie, 8-12 channel cats, and a BASS!

Most crappie were 8-10 inches with a few up to 12"

I guess they have been doing work on the outlet on the lake side and it's killed a bunch of fish in the outlet, mainly drum. They stunk pretty bad but but there was still plenty of fish to be caught. You can see all the dead fish laying along the bank.

One of my biggest crappie was a pretty fish.

Got out to Miami County today... Didn't catch one fish.  mainly fished jerkbaits, but thre an a-rig some, shakey head, and wiggle wart around the rocks.  Talked to two other people fishing, no one had caught anything.  First time I ever have zero-ed out there.

I've never done well at Miami this early in the year. I tried late March last year and caught a decent number of fish but the average size was way smaller than normal for out there, we probably caught one bigger than 15" all day and lots barely bigger than the jerkbait.

Tell me about the A-rig you threw.

I caught some last Feb last year, but with similiar results, I think one was over 15".  ANd Spring came super early last year.

It was a 3 wire, bladed rig.  FIrst time I have ever thrown this particular one.  I picked it up at the sportshow.  used 3/8 OZ jig heads with 4 inch Reaction INnovations skinny dippers.

Just with 2 hooks then? I've thought about doing that with one of my 3 arm rigs but it seems the 3 arm versions aren't nearly as effective as the 5 arm and since you can only have 2 baits on one in Kansas just doesn't seem like it would work very well.

Yep.  I hate the A-rigs, the only reason I threw it at all is because I have a tournament at Table Rock in early march as a co-angler.  There is about a good chance that will be what my boater is throwing so I am trying to get a some confidence with it.   Even when I use the 5 wires in MO I can never seem to get the dummy swim baits to swim well.

I haven't heard much about A-rigs at Table Rock this winter like last year, just a few reports here and there. Most of what I've been hearing has been jerkbaits and warts. If you haven't been on OA they have a great group of guys, most that live on Table Rock including some long time guides, that give very detailed reports about the lake.

Well I'm bored at work so I thought I'd check out some of the fishing forecast for some of those other fish I like to fish for. I was checking out the white bass forecast because I know Gardner Lake used to have some really nice ones. Like usual I was going down the list checking which lake had the biggest fish sampled but when I got to the Melvern River pond my eyes about popped out of my head!

5.88 pound white bass?!! That had to be a wiper or a misprint or something or they rolled up a state record sized white bass out of the river pond at Melvern.

I saw that.  I about **** my pants.  had to be a misprint, the 2 is directly under the 5, maybe it's suppose to be 2.88lb White.

Still an almost 3 pound white is a big arse white bass! I've fished that river pond once but I would be interested in trying it again if it has monster whites in it.
