retro basser Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Well Chris the first was so good that it's already gone. I like stratos' too, something to think about. Trackers are a good idea as well. That one that Peter bought this year is a pretty darn practical setup... 1 Quote

I bought a used LOWE from Smithville years ago and the 2nd time out the motor blew, I had no warranty on the motor and Ms. Austin who owns smithville owed me nothing but she had the same motor as mine with a bad lower unit and just switched them out for me at no charge. What size is the trolling motor and does it work? What size is the gas motor and did it start? Should be a good little boat when you get everything set up like you want it. Quote

I wouldn't mind a larger trolling motor but this will work for now. The outboard is a 50hp Johnson that has a fuel problem. Luckily, a coworker of my fiancee knows a bit about outboards so he is taking a look at it this week. Other than that, I just need to clean it up a bit-inside and out and put new hinges on some of the compartments. Quote

I had a 92' Johnsom 50hp with a fuel issue and it was the jets, once they where replaced it was all good. I did replace all fuel lines and the tank as to not suck up any old gunk into the carbs and just pre mixed the gas and 2 stroke oil. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 10, 2012 Global Moderator Posted December 10, 2012 I've got an old 15hp tiller drive Johnson and it's about the most dependable starting old motor I've ever seen. I'd replace the gas tank unless it's brand new. You never know what kind of crap may be in an old gas tank, especially the old metal ones. 1 Quote

It isn't just stuff you can see that you have to worry about messing up your motor and a new gas tank is sure to be a heck of a lot cheaper than a repair bill. Gas tank a fuel line are two of the main things I'd replace on a used boat unless they were brand new, especially on one that is having fuel problems already. 1 Quote

CCC I agree with Clayton 100% a new tank and fuel lines will save you head aches in the long run. Is this your first boat? Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 12, 2012 Global Moderator Posted December 12, 2012 Jon and I went to my favorite lake in the whole world today. That's right, we went to Hillsdale. It treated us surprisingly well. We were hoping for a keeper 'eye but of course we didn't catch any of those, walleye is pretty much the only thing I didn't catch. We got out there around 1 and fished until 3:30 and spent most of our time right by the Gardner Rd bridge with jigging spoons. We had probably 15 whites, 5 or 6 crappie, 5 drum, 2 bluegill, 1 catfish, and 1 walleye plus several huge shad that got snagged on our spoons. Nothing big enough to take pictures of but most of the whites were nice sized ones and they were slamming the spoons. I actually caught one that had mud in his mouth and coming out his gills. Best we could tell was he attacked my spoon right as it hit bottom and got a mouthful of mud along with my spoon. Jon caught the only walleye but it was only about 8". We fished silver and white spoons, color didn't seem to matter. Water temps were 43-42 1 Quote
Busy Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 I will be going to Hillsdale for the first time ever in mid-April hopefully to run my new pup in a Hunting Test. Will be hard to get down there without fishing! Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 18, 2012 Global Moderator Posted December 18, 2012 Drew and I fished Hillsdale today to try to catch some whites/walleye/crappie for a friend at work that's been craving some fish. Have I ever mentioned I HATE Hillsdale? The white bass were not were they were last week at all. After almost 2 hours I had lost 3 spoons and caught a carp on a power minnow. Caught a few small crappie on jigs out of the trees. Tried jigging spoons at the dam and marina area, nada, not even a bite, we did snag several small channel cats and a couple drum at the outlet. We ran back over to Gardner RD bridge to see if the whites moved up, nope.Crappie weren't in the trees they were in earlier. Just started tree hopping and finally found one with some good crappie in it. Ended up with 5 crappie and 4 whites that I filleted for my buddy. Man we worked for them and I was really wishing we would have just gone to La Cygne instead. Quote

You might want to try adding seafoam to the first tank of gas if you decide not to replace... I add a little sta-bil to every tank i put through my old merc too.. she dont like gas to even be three weeks old it seems.. My quest is gonna have to be put on hold till next spring... i just dont have the time anymore. Quote
micahthorlawson Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Hello all! i have been following this thread since mid-summer. Finally broke down and registered an account. I Fish around the south KC area alot, but only have a little 2 man bass boat. I have fished the BFLs (FLW) as a co-angler for the past couple years and just truly love bass fishing. I mostly fish MIami CO, Olathe, Cedar, Gardner, Shawnee Mission Park, Critzer and Mound CIty just because of the sizes. However, sometimes I get out on bigger lakes with the MNU's bass fishing teams boat. (I am an ALumni) ANyways. Just wanted to drop a line and say I look forward to giving updates on my outings! Micah Welcome to the board! We have a great group of guys on here that share a lot of information about a lot of lakes around the area. I spent a lot of years fishing from a 2 man and most of us that have boats fish out of smaller, aluminum boats so we're all pretty familiar with the smaller lakes in the area. Thankfully we have lots of small lakes under 200 acres reasonably close for those of us with small boats. We also try to do area get togethers to give everyone the chance to meet other guys on the board so keep your eyes open for that if you're interested. We'll probably have one in the spring and we usually try to start planning a couple months ahead of time. Quote

I'm less than an hour away from wrapping up my 12 hour shift then it's home to hopefully unwrap some new toys to play with on the water . Once deer season wraps up this week I will be back at it chasing them around at La Cygne and Wolf Creek until spring time Quote
