Super User Hi Salenity Posted September 18, 2012 Super User Posted September 18, 2012 Forgot to attach a picture. Here's the size of the whites I was catching yesterday. Despite not finding the green fish, it was still pretty fun to be whacking whites this size. Nice! What were you catching them on? Did you keep them? I've never ate a white... Quote
SuperFluke Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Well, couldn't find the green (or brown) fish anywhere on perry yesterday. Hunted for them for about 5 hours before I hung it up. Fished marina docks, piers, main lake points (and secondary's), channel bank, bridge rip-rap, and had one bite on a jig. I absolutely smoked the whites though. Texas shad squarebill around bridge rip-rap in rock creek. Some of em probably went over two pounds. pbrussel - I had the same experience on Saturday at Perry. Fished from 3 p.m to 7:30 p.m. and caught whites, drum, catfish, crappie, and three largemouth. As you know, you can catch whites at will under the rock creek bridge, and it sounds like we fished a lot of the same areas. I had a crankbait get smashed on the bank north of the last docks in rock creek, but immediately broke off. Was hoping for more green and brown fish, but it was nice to catch something for a change. Used a variety of baits, but mostly finesse plastics...got sick of whites trying to impale my crankbait into my finger. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 18, 2012 Global Moderator Posted September 18, 2012 They were within 1/4# of each other in weight. I donno, the lateral line looks a little more filled in on the first fish than the second. Then again it looks like it has some weird marking/scarring right behind the end of her cheek plate the first time you caught her and it looks like you can still see similar markings like she might still be healing up in the more recent picture. I'd like to think there's more than one that size in there but it may very well be the same fish. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 18, 2012 Global Moderator Posted September 18, 2012 I'll report more on the results of Mound City, Pleasanton (West) and Pleasanton (East) but in the meantime, here's a teaser vid: I landed a 5 lbs 2 oz chunk at Pleasanton East: That was a nice fish, they're in there for sure. How did the rest of the adventure turn out? Quote
AllDay Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 That was a nice fish, they're in there for sure. How did the rest of the adventure turn out? Last night I learned the hard way that YouTube doesnt accept uploads of video clip lengths of more than about 12:00-15:00 so there was tons of re-merging and re-uploading on my part. Anyhoo, Mound City's terrain, except for the dam, is not good for the bank fisher - bring a boat. The biggest fish I landed was a 3.9 lbs catfish (see Part 2 vid to be posted). Lots of small bass and lots of good bites. I didnt fish the entire lake though, just the west side. Would I try Mound again? Perhaps. Would have liked to have encountered a beefy bass at least once to make that decision easier. In fairness to the lake, I threw only crankbait and didn't slow it down with plastics so maybe some lunkers were there and I missed them! Moving forward, I'll work on looking more slowly at the fish and explaining things - this new video camera ordeal is new to me! Part 1 of 3: Quote

Part 1 of 3: Your videos make me want to go fish the lakes you're fishing. I haven't fished Mound City this year at all. I like that lake really well, there's some pigs in there. Pretty much every time I go out there I catch one over 4 but it can be a grind to get them. Quote

The top 1.5'' of the scales are more in a row? Quote

Overall it's a decent lake so it wouldn't take an arm twisting for me to return to it. Also, it happens that my outings are after a downpour so weather factors into my performance. The vids are here to let you guys decide if you want to fish these bodies of water! Quote
pbrussell Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Nice! What were you catching them on? Did you keep them? I've never ate a white... I was catching them on a bps squarebill. Texas shad color. I didn't keep any of the fish, though I thought about it. Whites are not as good as crappie in my opinion but they're one of the better eating freshwater fish out there, and like most fish you catch out of the lake, they are best FRESH. Crappie tend to keep much better than the whites. Quote

The odd thing Cole, was I was not under the rock creek bridge, but actually fishing the riprap parallel to the marina. They were busting shad like crazy in that area. That bank that is north of the row of docks has the channel right up against it. I was going to try fishing that at the end of the day, but was just too tired. I hear you on the finger thing. I had more treble in my thumb that what I would've liked. Quote

I happen to enjoy mound a good deal. In fact, I would much rather fish mound than critzer. Critzer has taken a lot of pressure off of mound and the guys I've spoken with that used to fish mound a lot say it's back on the upswing. Apparently in the past, 8 pounders have been known to come out of the lake but you didn't hear it from me. I had a 4-5 come unbuttoned earlier in the spring on the east bank when the grass and pads were just coming out. They're in there. Quote

I know of a confirmed 10 out of Mound as well, unfortunately it's hanging in the guys living room Personally have caught several 5 and a couple 6's out of there and netted a 7 for a friend. I was not impressed by Critzer at all. I'll have to wait several years for the trees to thin out before I'll go back. Quote
AllDay Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Pleasanton Lake (West) is a small ~30 acres body of water with easy shoreline access in 75% of the lake (good news). The bad news: the remaining 25% of the lake is where the fish were, lol. I bank fished the entire lake starting from the south end, going west, then north, and finished on the east. Unequivocally, the northeast and east side of the lake is where the fish were holding on that day. The problem is - as you'll see in the video, to effectively bank fish it you have to battle through the bushes and shoreline rocks. Bank fishing again reminded me of the trials and tribulations of that style: snags both in and out of the water! A boat gives you the upper hand. I was lazy to put my boat in the water because I didnt want to exhaust my batteries to the trolling motor at this lake because I was going to Pleasanton Lake (East) later which is about ~130 acres and I needed enough juice for that lake. Towards the northeast bank I lost a couple of big ones and it was due to my treble hooks on the crankbait bending outward from the snags and the fish. I'll be switching to larger more durable treble hooks for the future. Ya learn something new every time! Â Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 18, 2012 Global Moderator Posted September 18, 2012 I may go somewhere in the morning until a little after lunch time tomorrow and I'll have an empty back seat if anyone is interested. Going to depend a lot on the wind whether I'm sitting in a boat or treestand in the morning Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 20, 2012 Global Moderator Posted September 20, 2012 Chris and I did the trifecta today, both Pleasanton city lakes and La Cygne. East lake was by far the best and it wasn't really that great. I did get a couple decent ones on a white war eagle. First one was 3.84 Second was 3.24 West lake wasn't nearly as good as it usually is, the wind was pretty rough though. We only fished La Cygne for an hour but it was everything I expected, 2 fish and one came off at the boat. On a positive note I am now at 2007 bass for the year 1 Quote

The Pleasanton lakes are good when you want to mix it up from time to time. I will definitely go back to both of them. Next time around, I plan to hit up that smaller 11 acres Pleasanton lake that's adjacent to and to the east of the 32 acre Pleasanton West lake. I see the fun in testing your mettle on different bodies of water. It's one thing to dominate the Big 12 conference, it's another thing to go on the road against non-conference competition! I have a buddy who lives just 4 miles from La Cgyne, has fished it for years, and who worked at that powerplant. This Saturday early morning I'll be at La Cygne and he'll show me his tactics for that lake. Congrats on 2007! Quote
retro basser Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Allday: Is that one of those Go Pro HD helmet cams? That thing is really smooth. It is nice to see different lakes structure and water level. Fortunately because of this forum I haven't had to spend time on too much dead water, but it really sucks when you do, considering the investment to get out there and all. Blue: It's white spinnerbait season all right. couple weekends ago i hit the garnett city lake from the bank with one. The old salts fishing chicken liver on the bottom couldnt believe the 12lb cats i was bringing them.. they were up shallow in the afternoon just nailing that thing.. I told em the easiest way to catch catfish is just fish for bass hehe. Truck is back TOMMOROW if the gods are merciful. I'm gonna go on a bender! Quote

I got the ones with 16 GB (8 hours capacity) and I'm very satisfied with them. I'm practicing slowing down when I look around and when I look at the fish I catch so others can get a better view of the fish from the video. I'll bring these glasses on the 20th. They don't look retro so you probably wouldn't like them I too hate wasting my time on dead waters so this forum has been very good for not only saving time but $ from going to unecessary places. This year I've caught several catfish and of decent size ( > 20") and find it fun to catch cats off crankbaits while the salts sit and wait for something to bite their livers. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 21, 2012 Global Moderator Posted September 21, 2012 Well I'm going to try to give more heads up this time. My buddies that normally fish with me on Wednesday are all tied up, pretty much the rest of the year, ones out of vacation time and the other has to have surgery. So I'm going to have an empty back seat as I go fishing almost every Wednesday for most of the day. So if anyone is going to have a chance to fish on a Wednesday and wants to tag along just let me know. Quote

Ku Xiong Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 Well, went fishing today at good ole Mound City. Three of us boated approximately 60-70 bass. We lost count after 52. The largest one being 20 inches but only weighed 2.9 pounds!!!!! Big ole head but very emaciated. Caught lots of 15-17 inchers. Fished from 9 am until dark. Also managed to catch some crappie on squarebills and catfish on shad at the feeders. Caught them on a variety of baits today, squarebills, jig n pig, crawdad soft plastics, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, poppers, wakebaits, and chatterbait. The evening buzzbait was the best I have had in a long time. They were exploding on them buzzbaits like crazy!!! Lillypads were alright in the evening hours on topwater. Buzzbaits over the coontails was the way to go. Ripping squarebills through the coontails also produced in 4-5 feet of water. Caught several doing that. Very productive day. Very fun day. I got a little burnt from the sun. As long as I dont get burnt from the fish, Im ok with a little burn from the sun. 1 Quote

I haven't been out there all year and I just may have to make a trip after hearing that. I wonder why that bigger fish was so skinny? Usually the bass out of that lake are thick and healthy looking. I've always had good luck on golden shiner colored baits out there and I just tied some golden shiner colored chatterbaits, might be a good chance to give them a test run Quote
