Let me know if you guys have fished NEBO or surrounding bodies of water in Holton. I referenced NEBO in a post a few moments ago. Let me know your thoughts!

Retro asked about Nebo last year I believe, this was my reply to him.

Don't bother going to Nebo, they're making that stuff up about 8lb bass in that tiny lake :laugh5: Acutally if you catch her she'll look something like this.

101_0015.jpg

That's from a couple years ago out there. Don't expect to catch many but there are some big ones swimming in there. It's a shallow, muddy little lake with several brush piles and lots of lilly pads in the north end. That one ate a red shad Yum wolley bug in a brushpile straight across from the boat ramp. If you do catch her or one of her sisters, please put them back. Those fish are my Kansas version of Dottie. That one is missing part of the bottom of her tail and I've caught her a couple times and watched her get bigger from catching her and from pictures of when KDWP shocks that lake and rolls her up. I'd be heartbroken to know she went on someone's wall :cry3:

Also don't bother with the lily pads. They look great but I have NEVER caught a single bass from them or even had a bite for that matter. My biggest bass of the year this year was also from Nebo. Just have to emphasize how important catch and release is on a tiny lake that is capable of producing bass like that because the balance could be upset so easily. Don't expect many bites. When we fished it this spring we might have put 15 in the boat and that is probably one of the best days numbers wise I've had out there with a 4 and my 6.1 being the biggest. Most days I can expect it to be more like 5-10 fish though.

Banner Creek in Holton can be really good too. Much better numbers, lots of standing timber, largemouth and smallmouth with a shot at a good sized one of either.

If I boat her or her sister(s) I'll release her - you have my word! I hope for their sake they remain on the sw end of the lake - these areas aren't easily accessible by bank fishers. The north and east ends are easily accessible by bank fishers and I saw evidence of that by how rocks were piled up as make shift rod holders. I hope she's not on someone's wall!

I've never caught a big bass from that lake in an area that could be reached by a bank fisherman. They seem to be strictly catch and keep fishermen out there, mainly for catfish but I doubt they'd be shy about keeping a big bass either. I was out there one day they were shocking the lake, the number of fish over 5lbs in that lake is insane. The number of fish I normally catch over 5lbs from there is humbling.

Hey guys, lets start planning the fall get together.... We need some suggestions on a place and a date.

Hey KC guys. How's it going? Been a minute since I've checked in here. It's also been a minute since I've taken the boat out. Not that it's finally cooled down, I'll be getting out again next week. Any lakes that are hot? What are the fish doing in your local waters right now?

It's been pretty tough everywhere lately, everywhere I've been anyways. Going to check out a new lake Wednesday that's supposed to have some big fish, hopefully that will pan out better than Perry did last Wednesday.

Not sure I'd be able to make it but I'll try. I'd think maybe a smaller lake this time? Something like Miami or Pleasanton? I'd be up for Melvern again or Perry too though. Somewhere around mid October would probably be pretty good so we should be past turnover and all that mess and the fish should be in full fall feeding frenzy mode.

What would Lacygne be like that time of the year? They have cabins for anyone that wanted to "camp". I think it would be nice if we had a place to hangout after fishing... but catching fish would be good too.......................................... :tongue8:

It's La Cygne, it could be amazing or everyone could blank completely. More than likely it will be slow but a few fish will be caught. Bad thing about La Cygne, other than the fact it will be packed on the weekends, is that there is almost zero places to get out of the wind on that lake if it's from the north or south. It wouldn't be hard for someone to stay in those cabins but make the short drive to Miami or Pleasanton though if the wind was going to be a problem. Melvern and I believe Perry both have cabins also.

Since it was my second outing, I have no frame of reference of high or low levels. The north and east ends are a time-waster. As I trekked to the south, I took scenic routes and stopped to smell the roses by casting as I walked. Those areas are totally non-productive. I also drove over to Banner Creek in west Holton. I will give it a shot one day, definitely need a boat to make that worthwhile

Lacygne is hit or miss during the fall unless the lake temps keep dropping, I love that lake dont get me wrong but it would be the first guy to the rock pile wins if the temp is in the mid 60's. I like Clayton have had 30+ fish days out there with a lot of 4+'s boated. I like the idea of a lake I have never seen much less fished! Melvern was fun but my lawd they charge an arm and a leg for a campsite! Regardless I am in either way and count my boy Sean also he has been buggin the crap out of me ever since we fished Melvern!

Perhaps Perry would be good for this fall adventure. I would sure try my hardest to catch this one.

As much trouble as I have on that lake, everyone would smoke me. I STILL can't figure out how to get into numbers when I get out there. I can't complain though. The fish I do catch are usually between 3-5 pounds.

Beter off than I am, I have never seen that Lake!!

The good thing about Perry or Melvern in the fall is if the bass aren't biting very well you could probably smoke the white bass all day and maybe get a few 'eyes also.

I know I might be in the minority but for a get together I'd rather fish a smaller lake with a good population that also has the upside of a 3 plus pounder. I don't think 4-8 boats would crowd a 200 acre lake too bad, plus it's fun to shoot the **** out there a bit... The only ones I can think of with that perfect of population are Atchison, Miami, and Bourbon but there could be more... There is a great cabin at Atchison we could reserve and fish that Warnock that Blue was talking about too. Two good lakes that close together provides more water to cover for those who want it...

Perry works two but were gonna spend the same amount camping all put together that we would on a cabin, and you have to fire up the big engine so much to cover all the spots that are worth a ***** to fish... On a small lake we could all fish the entire thing and see what happens..

Just my .02

Lots of small lakes that could fit that bill. Bourbon State Lake, Miami, Pleasanton, Ft.Scott, or Bone Creek are all smaller lakes that have bigger fish and good populations of smaller fish to give everyone a good shot at catching fish. Melvern is still my pick for bigger lakes. You can all but guarantee everyone some fish and you don't have to run all over to find fish. The town of Melvern may have a little hotel or something that people could stay in that would be cheaper and easier than camping or renting a lodge. For it to work out for me it will probably have to start later in the morning and I'll just have to drive out after work though.

So let's see a show of hands on who wants to go and if you have a date or a lake that you'd prefer...

I'm in and I don't have a preference what lake it is but I'd like it to be on a Saturday if that works for everyone.

If everyone doesn't mind it starting midmorning I'm in. Location isn't a huge issue to me, I have my preferences but fishing is fishing, as long as it isn't Hillsdale :)

Thanks for sharing the video and the map. Sincerely appreciated. I might have to take a day trip up there. If you ever want someone to fish with let me know. I have a very flexible schedule. Tight Lines!

Thanks Jim. For Nebo, I've been there just twice and I'd bet $ the two best times are dawn through late morning and dusk (starting at 6:30 PM) and in the southern area. I can't speak for afternoons though. I'm cool with fishing with others at bodies of water I've already been to. When it's a new body, I prefer to fish it alone first to focus on finding and reporting on the good spots. I'll let you know when I revisit a spot!

I'm in for a Saturday outing. If it's a big lake, I'll give Melvern a shot (never fished it before but will give it a go). Any Saturday in October except 10/13 is fine for me. For smaller lakes, I'm curious about Pleasanton (see below). Not to split hairs but are you referring to Pleasanton Lake (small green circle) or Pleasanton City Lake (large green circle) or both? The advantage of Pleasanton is if someone's struggling badly, then head up north a piece and you're at Miami. I'm talking my way into Pleasanton for my smaller lake preference. Group goal: nobody gets skunked.

Definitely splitting hairs here: you need a dollar sign to be official: $.02

I would be interested in an outing. Do any of these lakes have boat/motor size limitations? Do they have any type of blue cat population?

If there is a blue cat population a fish fry might be fun after a good day on the water.

I am ok with this suggestion, I dont work weekends and would like a Saturday trip also.

I'm going to vote for Hillsdale. I think that place scares blue and that may level the playing field for the rest of us. :)
