retro basser Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 I got a deep cranking set up this year too. Haven't used it too much yet either. Are there any good deep cranking lakes around here? Seems like everyone I talk to about bassin around KS doesn't think you need to spend much time fishing any deeper than 10 ft... You know, i wouldnt call it good but at Lonestar that's about the only pattern that's ever worked for me well out there. 15 feet from the west boat ramp is an impressive ledge that usually holds em.. Found the best use for Hillsdale during the summer months! Yall dont be haten on my custom umbrella rig from Big Lots for $5!!!!! Love it!! Spent many an hour looking for that sliver of shade on the lake to rest mid-day and dreaming up a contraption to just rig the boat up with shade... now that you've tackled that, my next idea is a small wind turbine that charges the batteries I went with P-line C21 copolymer. I don't think it stretches quite as bad as mono and that stuff is crazy strong! I bet that big drum had your hopes up didn't it? I caught one about that size on a deep running crankbait out there a couple years ago and I thought I had a monster until I saw it. It never rolled like they normally do, just bulldogged around like a big mama bass. Cool, i'm using the cheap P-line copolymer in 8# on mine and it does pretty well gotta say. That's what i was reeling those drums in on with a rattletrap. If the fish hits it on a drop, i'm always suspicious that it's a drum out at perry, I dont think i've ever caught one with the guts to hit a lure while it's moving... but that guy was still pretty fun to haul in, not gonna lie.. Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 31, 2012 Global Moderator Posted July 31, 2012 Drum can be fun to fight when they get that big no doubt. They'll hit a moving bait too, I've caught a bunch on crankbaits and even a few on spinnerbaits. Quote

If ya want to get technical you can mount a pole holder (salt water type or PVC Pipe) and take the one off your back patio and use it just fine!! I did that in Florida with my CC after my T Top broke and I did not have the $$ to replace it! I just slipped the patio Umbrella in the pole holder opened it up while at anchor or even drifting and all good. On the ride in take it, store it and put back on the patio before the wife ever knew it was gone! Cheap I am, Genius I am not Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 2, 2012 Global Moderator Posted August 2, 2012 Well I'm doing some training right now that let me get off a little earlier than usual and I was a little closer to home than usual (Olathe) so I called my buddy whose parents live at Lake Quivira and asked if he wanted to do a little moonlight bassin' and he said he was up for it for a couple hours. Still 90 degrees out and stupid humid but we managed to put a few in the boat, nothing huge but fun. Average sized one on one of my black and purple jigs I got brave and fished the hot pink chatterbait I made for my wife and caught 5 on it! Actually seemed to catch better sized fish. And big fish of the night. I seem to be getting into a habit of this? Black and purple jig next to a dock got thumped right off a little rock ledge. Had my hopes up for a minute, 13 1/4lb flathead. Chris S Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 Blue your gonna have to go to the Catfishing website if you keep this up!!! Quote
retro basser Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 Solar Charger from Harbor Freight!! Good call! I looked into solar actually, even a good sized panel was only putting a little over 1 Amp per hour back into the battery, my battery is about 90 Amps and I drain it in a day... Might get a little one to keep the starter battery topped off though... Quote

I got on Harbor Freights mailing list so once a month I get the sale guide with all kinds of stuff in it, if I see a coupon on the Solar charger I will let ya know! The one thing I did grab from Harbor Freight was a back up set of trailer lights, they are magnetic and work pretty well for $9.99!!! The coupon was in Bass Master Magazine! Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 3, 2012 Global Moderator Posted August 3, 2012 Had about an hour after training before I had to go in for my overtime shift tonight so I stopped by Olathe and fished off the dam. Tossing a buzzbait and the same black and purple jig I had last night I caught 3 (2 on a jig, 1 on the buzzbait) in about 30 minutes and got busted off on my jig by what I'm guessing was another kittyfish. I don't know what their attraction to me has been lately? I spent the night on the river Sunday night and they ignore me but I go bass fishing and they won't leave me alone? Must be like when you're dating when you don't have a girl none of them want you but when you have a girl they all want you? Something like that? Quote
Wachati Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 Fished Miami Co. yesterday evening. Steady fishing from 5-9 pm. Caught on shad swim bait, square bills, Missouri craw jig, and a sexy mouse spinner caught the biggest of the day. I think I had the most fun during about a 20 minute window late in the evening when the bass were just annihilating shad top water. The amount of bait in that lake is just crazy. They liked the smaller swimbait during this time, wouldn't touch a 5" or 6" swim shad. Overall I thought it was great fishing for the heat. Quote

I think me and Wachati (Peter) are going to try somewhere Monday, maybe Bone Creek or something since it's supposed to be so much cooler out with those highs in the low 90's. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted August 5, 2012 Super User Posted August 5, 2012 28MPH winds as I hit the water this evening at Miami Co. I brought 8 rods but only unloaded 4 that I thought I could use in the wind. I had an eyelet fall out of a tip top on a Veritas and I was throwing a 3/4oz spinner and had that once a year backlash bad enough I just put it away leaving me with a deep crank rod with an old back up 5.1 reel that hated the wind as much as I did! Long story short I was using a 7'11''H rod with 23#fc to throw a 1oz jig not the ideal bait on a tough time of the year for that lake I did get a few with the biggest 2 probably close to 3# As I left the lake and got phone service again I checked and the winds were still 16-24mph Quote
Chris S Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Took a ride down to La Cygne to check things out, the new tower is almost finished! Jake and I fished a few spots with the best coming from the rock ledges in the back of the lake, shakey head with a worm and square bill. WT was 87 to 99 Cant wait for these temps to keep dropping!!!! Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted August 6, 2012 Super User Posted August 6, 2012 Me and Wachati went to Miami county early Sunday morning until around 10? We caught fish but it was hard to catch more than one in a spot. Some times we wouldn't get any fish off a point at all. The bite may be picking up but it's still barely worth going. Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 6, 2012 Global Moderator Posted August 6, 2012 Me and Peter went to Bone Creek today. Fished from about 6am to 2pm. Lots of fish but couldn't find the big fish. Most fish were on baby brush hogs, trick worms, or squarebills. Trolling motor battery was dead the last couple hours but we could just barely move because of the light winds. I ended up with 41 bass, a few bluegill and sunfish and one channel cat. Quote
joefish Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Anybody fished Perry lately? Think I will head over there Tuesday morning. Quote

Sounds like you did better than we did. what colors were working for you I used a baby brush hog in GP with blue flake Sunday and had no luck Hey what's the scoop on your motor did you figure out what was wrong with it? Anyone wanting to sell a 24V bow mounted foot controlled trolling motor let me know. Quote

Anyone wanting to sell a 24V bow mounted foot controlled trolling motor let me know. I was using watermelon red magic with the twin tails dipped in chartruese JJ's. Also caught some on watermelon candy after I went through the bag of watermelon red magic. I talked to Frank's about my motor, they said they should get to look at it the end of this week which works well because I'll be getting paid for the extra week of hours I worked in overtime this last couple weeks so I'll have extra cash to pay for it. Just hope it's done in time for me to start fishing the Wednesday nighters in a couple weeks. Quote
